Welcome to the smile meditation.
During the next few minutes we will cultivate calm,
Peace,
And positive energy.
Let's start by finding a comfortable seat.
You may choose to close your eyes or just take a soft gaze.
Allow yourself to feel supported by whatever you're sitting on.
Let's take a deep breath in.
Now as low as you can,
Release it,
Allowing your shoulders to drop and soften,
But keeping your heart and chest lifted.
Let's do that one more time.
Taking a deep breath in and a long,
Slow exhale.
Then allow your breath to resume a natural flow.
Now let's bring awareness first to our face.
Let's take a deep breath in.
Now as low as you can,
Release it,
Allowing your shoulders to drop and soften,
But keeping your heart and chest lifted.
Let's take a deep breath in.
Now as low as you can,
Release it,
Allowing your breath to resume a natural flow.
Now let's bring awareness first to our face and then to our mouth,
Jaw,
And lips.
Allow your jaw to drop slightly,
Creating space between your teeth.
Now gently and slowly move it side to side a few times,
Releasing any tension in that area.
Now let's take a deep breath in and a long,
Slow exhale.
Let's take a deep breath in and a long,
Slow exhale.
Now let's bring awareness first to our face and then to our mouth,
Jaw,
And lips,
Allowing your mouth to drop slightly,
Creating space between your teeth.
Now gently and slowly move it Now turn the corners of your mouth up and find a soft smile,
Even if smiling is the furthest thing from your mind.
Maintaining this soft smile,
Let's take a few breaths.
Now allow the smile to seep upward and smile with your eyes.
Trying to maintain this smile for the remainder of this meditation,
Let's take a few moments here to simply breathe.
Whether your smile is natural or intentional,
Your mind doesn't discriminate.
Serotonin and dopamine are released into your system,
Lifting your spirits and possibly even those around you who witness your smile.
Smiling is a natural antidepressant.
Smiling relieves stress and lowers your blood pressure.
Smile is contagious.
A smile is free.
In the words of Thich Nhat Hanh,
Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile,
But sometimes your smile is the source of your joy.
Are you still smiling?
If not,
Gently bring your smile back.
As we come to the end of this meditation,
Take a moment to create an intention around your smile.
Maybe smiling at a stranger or commit to smiling at yourself anytime you see your reflection.
And now take your smile with you and don't be afraid to use it.
Namaste.
