Welcome! This meditation comes from the Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra, an ancient and highly respected Tantra from around the 8th century. The Vijñāna Bhairava comes from the Indian Tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism and offers 112 ways to experience the energy of meditation, the Kuṇḍalinī Śakti. In this simple meditation, we will practice a dhāraṇā (centering technique) from the Vijñāna Bhairava. We engage with a dhāraṇā to experience the energy of meditation. Here we will practice dhāraṇā 6, which focuses on being aware of the Śakti as scintillating light, leaping successively from each chakra, from the mūlādhāra at the base of the spine, to dvādaśānta, a space that is three fist-widths above the top of your head; this dvādaśānta is the space of Kuṇḍalinī Śakti's absorption into Cit or Awareness, the space Kashmir Shaivism calls Bhairava.

Hello everybody.

Welcome.

Welcome to our further exploration of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra.

Vijnana,

The experience of Bhairava,

Absolute consciousness.

So,

Vijnana Bhairava,

The experience of absolute consciousness.

In Kashmir Shaivism,

This absolute consciousness is our true nature.

And it's available to us at all times when we can recognise it.

So one of the best ways we can recognise it is to become still,

To become aware,

To become aware.

The 112 Dharanas and the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra are a manual of self-realisation.

You can work with these Dharanas,

These Centering Techniques,

To take you to your natural state of awareness.

In fact,

That's what they're designed for.

So,

Let's begin.

We're going to work with Dharana 6 of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra.

Dharana 6.

Take a comfortable posture.

You might like to close your eyes.

And I'm going to read the Dharana for you.

In fact,

I'll sing it for you.

Ud gacchantiṃ taditrūpaṃ prati cakraṃ kramāt kramāṃ Ud vāṃ ustitrayaṃ yāvād tāvāraṃ te mahodayaḥ Meditate on this Shakti like lightning.

The lightning-like energy,

The Kundalini,

Which moves from one Chakra,

One centre of energy,

To the next,

Until she merges three fist-widths above the top of the head at Dvāda Śānta,

Dvāda Śānta.

At the end,

One can experience the magnificent rise of Bhairava.

So your eyes are closed and I'm going to talk you through the seven main Chakras.

So place your awareness on the Mūlādhāra,

The root Chakra.

Place your awareness there,

At the Pīrṇīyam.

Place your awareness at the Pīrṇīyam and feel the scintillating lightning-like Shakti there.

Feel it there.

And now feel that Shakti jump to your pelvis area,

To your Svadhishthan,

Svadhishthan.

And then feel the lightning-like Shakti jump to your navel area,

Manipur,

Manipur,

The perfect jewel.

And now feel the lightning-like Shakti jump up to the middle of your chest,

Right in the centre of your chest,

Anāhata,

The heart Chakra.

And now feel the lightning-like Shakti jump to Viśuddha,

At the base of your throat.

Feel her jump there.

And now feel the lightning-like Shakti jump to between your eyebrows and feel the Shakti there.

And now feel her jump to the crown of the head,

Sahasrara,

Sahasrara,

Thousand-petalled lotus at the crown of the head.

The lightning-like Shakti scintillates there.

And now imagine her jump to three fist-widths above the top of your head,

To Brahmāraṇḍra,

Dvāda Śānta,

The place where she merges with Absolute Consciousness.

Feel her merge there.

This is the end point of the Dharana.

We're going to do this again and then you can work with it during the week if you like.

Just whenever you feel you'd like to experience the Shakti moving up through the centres and merging into Absolute Consciousness.

Like anything,

It may take some practice.

But if we practice from a space of joy and from enjoying it,

It makes the Dharana so much easier to do and we can feel the results.

In fact,

They're simple,

They're immediate.

These are the benefits of the Dharanas.

They're simple and they're immediate.

They can work wherever we are.

So,

Place your awareness on the Pīrṇīyam,

Muladhara and feel and see the lightning-like Shakti,

The lightning-like energy there at the Pīrṇīyam,

At the Muladhara.

Now she jumps up to the pelvis,

Pelvis area.

Feel the Shakti there.

Feel the lightning-like Shakti there.

She scintillates like lightning.

Now feel her jump up to the navel.

She jumps up to the navel,

Manipura Chakra.

Feel it there.

Feel the energy there.

And now feel her jump up to Anāhata,

To the heart chakra,

Right in the middle of the chest.

Feel it there.

And now feel her jump up again to Vishuddha,

To the base of the throat.

Feel her there.

Feel her there.

And now feel her jump up to Agnya Chakra,

Right in the middle of the eyebrows.

Feel her jump there and see the scintillating light,

The lightning-like Shakti.

Now feel her jump up to Sahasrara,

The top of the skull.

Feel her there,

Scintillating and shining like lightning.

And then feel her jump up three fist widths above the top of the head to Brahmarandra,

Where she merges with Absolute Consciousness.

The light of Shakti joins the light of Shiva.

And you merge in Absolute Consciousness.

Stay there for a while.

And this time we're going to do it in a very meditative way,

A little less dynamic and energized.

Place your awareness on Mooladhara.

Place your awareness there at the perineum.

The Shakti scintillates and shines there.

Feel her scintillating and shining there.

And now she jumps up to the pelvis area,

To Swadhishthana.

Feel her in the pelvis area and see her scintillating and shining,

Scintillating and shining like lightning.

Now she jumps up to the navel,

Manipura.

Feel her there,

Scintillating and shining at your navel.

And then she shoots upwards to the centre of your chest,

Anahata.

Feel her there and Anahata,

The heart chakra.

And now she jumps up again to the base of the throat.

Feel her there,

Feel her there,

Navishuddha.

See her scintillating,

Shining like lightning.

And now she jumps up to Ajna chakra,

In the middle of your eyebrows.

Feel her there,

See her there,

Shining,

Scintillating like lightning.

And now she jumps up to the top of the skull,

Sahasrara.

Feel her there,

Scintillating,

Shining at the top of your skull.

And then she moves up three fist widths higher above your head,

Where she merges into consciousness.

Feel her merge there at Brahmarandra,

Three fist widths above the top of your head.

Feel her merge there and stay there for a while.

Through this practice,

One experiences the magnificent uncovering of Bhairava,

Supreme consciousness.

And there you have it,

Dharana number six.

Enjoy your practice.

Work with it as much as you can.

And I'll see you again very soon for the next Dharana.
