Okay everyone,

Let's talk about gratitude.

Now before you completely check out thinking this is just another like count your blessings cheesy talk,

Let me say this.

That gratitude is secretly very powerful.

And I'm not talking about reading silly quotes or saying affirmations over and over again or looking at hindrance boards.

I'm really talking about the brain chemistry,

The neural pathways,

And a whole bunch of happy chemicals,

The happy hormones that you bring dishes out every time you feel grateful.

So if you're ready,

Let's dive into the science of what happens in your brain when you feel thankful.

First up is your brain's reward circuit.

Imagine the circuit board in your brain that's like an internal high five.

When you do something it likes,

It gives you a little bit of dopamine and dopamine is your brain's version of a sweet treat.

So every time you feel genuinely grateful,

Like somebody holds the door open for you,

Somebody lets you into the lane you're waiting for while you're sitting in traffic,

Or you remember that you have coffee waiting or a fun time set up with your friends this weekend,

Your brain lights up and releases dopamine.

Dopamine is your feel-good neurotransmitter.

It makes you want more of whatever made you happy in the first place.

So get this,

The more you practice gratitude,

The more dopamine your brain releases and the happier you feel.

It's such a good hack towards your own happiness.

Next,

Let's talk about serotonin.

Dopamine's a bestie in the happy chemical department.

Serotonin is like your brain's natural antidepressant.

When you're feeling thankful,

Your brain's gratitude response activates the part of your brainstem that produces serotonin.

So this gives you a calm,

Content feeling that balances out stress.

It's like your brain saying,

Take a breath,

You've got this,

You can do it.

So gratitude isn't just a quick pick-me-up,

It's building up your brain's reserves of peace,

Calm,

Stability,

Safety.

Now let's talk about what happens when you feel like your brain is going a million miles a minute and stress has a chokehold.

What's happening there is cortisol,

The brain's primary stress hormone.

But here's the good news.

Gratitude is one of the most natural ways to dial that cortisol down.

Studies show that feeling grateful can lower cortisol levels by up to 23% and it doesn't stop there.

When you're grateful,

It activates the hippocampus,

The key part of the brain that helps with memory and emotional regulation.

So that means once again,

Less stress and more ability to stay cool,

Calm and collected,

Which we all need more of,

Right?

Moving on to one of the brain superstar regions,

The prefrontal cortex.

This part of your brain is like your CEO of empathy,

Decision-making and future planning.

When you feel gratitude,

The prefrontal cortex gets a workout.

So it helps you to think clearer,

Be more kind and make better decisions.

Also understanding your emotions as they come up.

When you practice gratitude,

You actually strengthen this area,

Giving you a sharper sense of empathy and a greater ability to build connections with others.

Because when you have an awareness of your emotions and you're making better decisions,

You will have better communication with your friends and loved ones.

So gratitude just doesn't make you feel good.

It makes you a better friend,

Partner or teammate.

Now here's where gratitude really flexes its power.

Neuroplasticity or your brain's ability to rewire itself.

Think of every grateful thought as a little workout for your brain.

It's a rep that keeps building positive pathways.

It's like doing sit-ups,

But inside your brain.

With each gratitude practice,

You're building up your gratitude muscles in the brain.

So you're rewiring it to be a gratitude seeking machine,

Which means over time,

You'll automatically start to see more of the good in life,

Even when things aren't perfect,

Which means you'll be holding more of a positive attitude,

Having more empathy and compassion for those around you and able to trust in yourself that when the storms of life happen,

That things are going to be going back to the good parts of life because the storms are only temporary.

So what's the takeaway here?

Practicing gratitude isn't just a nice thing to do.

It is brain-boosting,

Mood-lifting,

Stress-busting activity.

And the best part?

It's simple to build into your day.

You can start with a gratitude journal.

Tell someone you appreciate them.

Stop and notice when something feels good.

Take yourself on a walk and appreciate nature.

Surround yourself with good-feeling things.

It all counts and your brain will thank you for it.

You will find that you will start making better decisions.

You will start being able to regulate your emotions more clearly to make better decisions with your life and to have stronger relationships with the people that you love.

So to wrap up,

I challenge you to try this every day this coming week.

Make a note of three things you're grateful for and watch as your brain starts to feel brighter,

Stronger,

And more balanced.

Who knew that saying thanks could be this powerful?
