A Meditation for Ujima.
Collective Work and Responsibility.
Ujima is celebrated on the third day of Kwanzaa,
Which is December 28th.
Ujima means collective work and responsibility.
It reminds us to build and maintain our communities together and to solve problems as a collective.
Please join me for our meditation.
So go ahead and find a seat.
Get comfortable.
Roll your shoulders back.
Be mindful to sit with your head over your heart,
Heart over your pelvis,
And begin to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Breathe in through your nose,
Visualizing the energy of teamwork,
And out through your mouth,
Releasing any feelings of isolation.
Breathe in through your nose,
And then on this last exhalation,
Remove all the air that you can out of your body.
And now visualize a picture of a flourishing garden.
You see flowers of different types.
You may see vegetables or even just plants.
Different colors,
Different smells and textures.
See them blowing in the breeze.
See the sun as they hit each of the petals and the leaves.
Now imagine that you're in that garden with others.
Everyone is contributing to that garden.
Some are planting seeds,
Some are pruning,
Some are watering,
And some are harvesting.
See how you are adding your own unique touch to this shared effort in cultivating the space of this garden.
This garden is providing beauty to the community.
It's providing nourishment through food.
It's a gathering place for community members to meet up and form connections in.
This garden symbolizes an important space in our communities.
Connect to your role in the garden of your own community.
Now I'm going to state a few affirmations that resonate with the energy of Ujima.
Feel free to repeat after me or allow the words to sit with you.
I contribute to the well-being of my community.
My actions strengthen our collective goals.
We rise by lifting each other up.
I am an active and valued member of my community.
As we end today's practice on Ujima,
I invite you to identify one shared responsibility in your life,
Whether it's with family,
Friends,
Or a larger community,
And visualize yourself taking a step to contribute in a meaningful way.
Thank you for joining me today,
And happy Kwanzaa.
