Tamara Myoho Gabrysch — Myōra

Here you will find a collection of Japanese Zen chants and Buddhist devotional music. Tamara Myoho Gabrysch is a Zen teacher in the White Plum lineage and co-abbot of Zen River Temple in the Netherlands. Besides serving as Tenzo (Zen Cook) at the temple, she is also a musician under the artist name Myōra. Her music brings together Zen chanting, folk-style guitar, fingerstyle playing, and classical arpeggios. Her experience of Zen practice, sutra chanting, guitar, and choral singing has deeply influenced her musical work. Rather than writing conventional lyrics, Myōra works with texts from Buddhist sutras and ancient dharanis in English, Sanskrit, Pali, and On’yomi (Sino-Japanese). She creates restorative, contemplative music using layered harmonies and acoustic textures. Some of her recordings have also been used in hospice settings for their soothing and calming quality.
