Find a comfortable position where you can be both relaxed and alert.

Close your eyes and take several deep,

Nourishing breaths.

Allow each exhale to release any tension you might be holding in your body.

Begin by visualizing yourself standing at the entrance of a forest path.

This path leads to the deeper regions of your psyche where your shadow aspects reside.

The air is still and there's a sense of ancient wisdom all around you.

As you prepare to take your first steps on this path,

Notice that there appears to be a figure standing at the threshold.

Neither blocking your way nor inviting you forward,

This is the guardian of your shadow.

A protective presence that Jung might describe as the gatekeeper between your conscious awareness and the unconscious material you've yet to integrate.

Take a moment to simply observe this guardian.

Notice its form,

Its posture,

Its energy.

Each person's guardian appears differently.

It might appear as an animal,

An elder,

A mythological figure or simply a presence without definite shape.

With curiosity rather than fear,

Mentally address this guardian.

I recognize your presence.

I understand you have been protecting me by keeping certain aspects of myself at a distance.

Listen deeply for any response.

The guardian may communicate through words,

Images,

Sensations or intuitive knowing.

Now respectfully ask,

What do you most want me to understand before I proceed with this shadow work?

Remain receptive to whatever arises.

Perhaps the guardian wishes to share wisdom about pacing,

About compassion,

About respect for your own process.

Ask,

How will I know when I'm moving too quickly or pushing too hard in this work?

The guardian often holds the wisdom of your own inner timing and can help you recognize when to proceed and when to pause for integration.

Finally,

Express gratitude to this guardian.

Thank you for your protection.

I honor your role in my psychological well-being.

I ask for your continued guidance as I move forward with respect and care.

Visualize the guardian acknowledging your gratitude,

Perhaps offering a sign or gesture.

That indicates its ongoing presence throughout your journey.

As this meditation comes to a close,

See yourself taking just one step forward on the path,

Symbolic of your commitment to proceed with awareness.

The guardian remains nearby,

Neither hindering nor rushing your process.

Take three deep breaths and with each exhale,

Strengthen your connection to this protective aspect of your psyche.

When you feel ready,

Gently return your awareness to your physical surroundings and open your eyes,

Carrying with you the wisdom of this.
