Hello and welcome to another episode of Bite-sized Mindfulness.
Have you ever looked at something without giving it a name,
Without saying to yourself what it is?
Just looked.
Because usually,
When we see something,
Thought comes in immediately.
It says,
That's a tree,
A cup,
A face I know.
And in that moment,
We are no longer seeing,
We are remembering.
We are comparing what is before us to something we already know.
So is it possible to look without the interference of memory?
To see a tree,
A cloud,
A patch of light,
Even a familiar face without the word,
Without the image,
Without the screen of past experience?
Because when there's no naming,
There is only seeing.
The mind becomes very still,
Very quiet.
And in that stillness,
The thing seen reveals its own beauty,
Its own truth,
Not what we project upon it.
Now I'll leave you just for a short while,
About a minute.
Look at whatever is before you.
See if you can simply see without naming,
Without describing.
Let the seeing happen on its own.
It's not an act of effort.
You don't need to force anything.
The labeling will happen.
It's habitual.
So when it does,
Just notice it and return to seeing.
Perhaps you've noticed how the mind wanted to speak,
To interfere,
To call things by their names.
And perhaps you also saw that when it doesn't,
There's a gentle quiet,
A sense of wonder,
As though everything is new.
To see without naming is to meet life directly,
Not through the words of the mind,
But through the silence of awareness.
You can try this anytime,
Anywhere.
Have fun with it.
Let it surprise you.
See the impact that this small exercise can have on your overall mental well-being.
Thank you for listening.
