In this meditation, we explore a quiet truth: sometimes the way back to ourselves isn’t through striving or remembering more — it’s through forgetting. Forgetting the stories, roles, and expectations we carry. Forgetting who we think we’re supposed to be. As the layers soften, space opens. And in that space, something familiar returns — a sense of calm, presence, and connection to what’s real beneath the noise. This practice includes a short Dharma talk followed by a simple meditation, inviting you to let go, pause, and come home to yourself. No effort required. Just breath, stillness, and a willingness to rest in what remains when everything else falls away. Perfect for moments of transition, reflection, or when you feel disconnected from yourself.

Welcome to your meditation entitled,

It's in the forgetting that we remember.

My name is Lisa,

And I'll be your guide.

There's something almost ironic about this path that we walk,

How much energy we spend trying to remember who we really are.

We gather titles,

Roles,

Identities,

Little badges of meaning.

We tell stories about ourselves.

We tell stories to ourselves.

Sometimes they're very carefully Instagram curated.

Sometimes they're inherited from our family of origin.

Many times they're a little bit worn out around the edges,

But we still hold on to them.

But when we sit in silence long enough,

We start to notice something quieter,

Something truer,

That it's actually in the forgetting of all of those things that remembering becomes possible.

Not the everyday forgetfulness,

Like walking into a room and having no idea why you're there or how many times did I go in the basement recently and wonder,

What did I come down here for?

That's its own spiritual curriculum.

I'm talking about soft forgetting,

The kind where we loosen our grip on the storylines that we've been running in the background.

Story of who we think we're supposed to be,

The story of who we want others to think we are,

The story of who we were in the past,

The story we might fear that others believe about us.

As these layers fall away in stillness,

Not all at once,

Just gently one breath at a time,

Something steadier can begin to reveal itself.

There's a part of you that never changes,

No matter how many stories you've lived or outgrown,

Part of you that's not striving,

Not performing,

Not negotiating its way.

It's the part of you that simply is.

And meditation,

Stillness,

It's the bridge to that place.

It gives us a few blessed minutes where we can stop carrying the heavy bag of identity on our shoulders wrapped around us.

It's a chance to set everything down,

The expectations,

The comparisons,

The anxieties about being enough.

When we pause long enough to forget all of that,

Even briefly,

We remember the deeper truth.

We are enough before any of these stories existed.

We remain enough underneath them.

And we'll still be enough when every single one dissolves.

So as we move towards stillness today,

Allow yourself to release the layers you've been holding.

You're not erasing your life.

My invitation is just to loosen in the tight places.

Let the storyteller take a breath.

Let the rolls soften around the edges.

Let your mind settle.

In this gentle forgetting,

We can open the door to remembering who we really are.

The whole luminous one who's been there all along.

Now let's prepare for our meditation.

Find a comfortable seat.

Rest your hands gently in your lap and softly close your eyes.

Now go within to that quiet place where we experience our connection to our higher self.

Begin to observe the inflow and the outflow of your breath.

And with each inflow and outflow of your breath,

Allow yourself to become more relaxed,

More comfortable,

More at peace.

Take your seat of quiet dignity.

Consider today's centering thought.

In forgetting,

I return to what is real.

In forgetting,

I return to what is real.

Hold that softly in your heart.

In forgetting,

I return to what is real.

Now I'll introduce a mantra that you may want to use during this meditation.

On your inhale,

Let go.

On your exhale,

Come home.

Let go.

Come home.

Please continue with your meditation.

I'll mind the time,

Starting and ending with a soft bell.

It's time to gently release the mantra.

Sit restfully for a few moments.

And when you feel ready,

Allow your eyes to open slowly.

Bring the light of this practice back into your day.

As you move through your day,

Carry our centering thought with you.

In forgetting,

I return to what is real.

Thank you so much for your practice today.

May the calm you've cultivated here continue to support and steady you through whatever comes next.
