Withdrawal is not avoidance or passivity—it’s a nervous system shutdown in response to: Chronic unsafety (home, society, or internal landscape) Unwelcome identity (race, body, accent, orientation) Invisible pain (displacement, exile, suppression) Physiological Effects: Low vagal tone Flattened affect Dissociation from body Reduced pleasure and play From Survival to Self-Mastery "You do heal. In this moment, right here, right now." This guide is a call back into the body—not for performance, but for presence. Whether you're a clinician, a survivor, or both—returning to these five experiences is not only healing. It is an act of resistance, reclamation, and rising. Ana’s work becomes a mirror for our time. In 2025, with rising political authoritarianism, cultural censorship, and the silencing of minority and independent voices, this episode is a somatic protest.

So let's talk about state when we are withdrawn.

How do we move our body,

Our soul,

Our heart from the place of being withdrawn from people,

From life,

From environment?

The experience that wants to happen for the people who are in withdrawn state,

Number one is safety,

Feeling safe.

We do withdraw when nothing around us is safe.

Second experience that wants to happen is being welcomed,

Being welcomed in life,

Being welcomed in society,

Being welcomed in the family for who you are,

For who you are.

That experience didn't happen,

That's why you withdraw,

That's why.

Then you have not been welcomed,

And not being welcomed means,

Well,

I can't feel safe.

Third experience that wants to happen is being here in the world,

Being here.

It's okay,

Being here on this planet,

Right now,

Right here is okay.

The quality of being present,

To be engaged,

To share thoughts,

To share voice,

That's the experience that wants to happen.

Fourth,

Pleasurable contact,

Pleasurable contact.

This is what we crave.

When we are withdrawn,

There is no contact,

There is no any pleasure,

There is only threat.

What needs to happen,

What our body craves to do,

And this is how we heal,

Is to have pleasurable contact.

This can be a small talk for a start,

Just a small talk,

Just a safe talk,

Safe exchange with someone in a coffee shop,

In a dog park with your neighbor.

And then you can expand of holding someone's hand who feels safe for you,

Or just holding your pet,

Your cat,

Your dog,

And being aware of,

Yes,

This contact,

This touch is safe,

Or this exchange of thoughts,

Of small talk,

Is actually pleasurable,

That's the experience that wants to happen in your body.

It craves to happen.

And the last one,

And the last one,

What needs to happen is the freedom from terror.

Okay,

That's the experience we need to embody,

We need to experience,

We need to have,

And that's the freedom from terror.

No one withdraws by default to your social beings,

No one withdraws if they didn't have that experience of witnessing and also of being,

Being immersed with the terror and living the terror.

Okay,

So let me repeat,

And you can pause,

You can pause this track,

Write this down,

And you can work on it.

How do we heal in somatic therapy?

We heal by embodying the experience that wants to happen.

Okay,

So you can work on your own,

You can work with a somatic therapist,

And you can,

Throughout your day,

Just be aware of those experiences.

This is what you own to yourself,

This is what you own to your wounded soul,

Your body,

Your heart,

Okay?

So,

You can write this down,

The experience that wants to happen if you're a withdrawn person,

Or if you have someone who is withdrawn,

This is how we help others.

Safety,

Being welcomed,

Being here in the world,

Pleasurable contact,

And the freedom from terror.

This is for this track.

Until next time,

I'm Anamal,

I'm a somatic experiencing therapist specializing in trauma and PTSD recovery.

I wish you much self-compassion and peace on your journey of healing,

And as always,

Remember to be gentle with yourself.

You do heal in this moment,

Right here,

Right now,

In this minute,

In this hour,

In this day.

You do heal,

And you're not alone.

Much care.
