Knowing Before Thought A Meditation of Direct Experience This meditation is an invitation to rest in simple knowing,
That presence is already here before thought begins.
Even now,
Before anything is said,
Awareness is inseparably present.
And from this open awareness,
Allow each experience to reveal itself,
Just as it first appears.
Bring the body to a calm,
Quiet rest.
Feel the rhythmical flow of breath.
The quiet contact with where you are seated.
Be still,
Fully present here,
With what is.
Experience is already unfolding,
Sounds,
Sensations,
Subtle movements of the mind.
Let everything unfold,
Exactly as it is.
Now remaining aware,
Quietly listen.
Notice the very first instant a sound is heard.
Before the mind says what it is.
Before memory compares it.
Before meaning forms.
Before a label appears.
Just pure contact,
Fresh,
Immediate,
Alive.
A sound appears.
And for a brief moment,
There is only hearing.
No naming,
No interpretation,
Just pure listening,
Stillness,
Presence.
Now bring this same awareness to sensation.
Perhaps the flow of the breath,
The quiet pulse of the heart,
The touch of clothing,
The feeling of the hands resting.
Notice the first moment sensation is felt.
Before familiarity arises,
Before the mind organizes the experience.
Quiet,
Raw sensation.
Spontaneously appearing,
Vital,
Lingering and fading,
All effortlessly.
Thoughts may also arise.
You might begin to notice a subtle stirring,
Just before thoughts become words.
A quiet moment,
Not yet formed into language.
Rest here,
In this gentle threshold.
And perhaps also notice a simple,
Living sense of being here.
Before the mind says who you are.
Before a role,
A name or an identity is believed.
Just this dynamic aliveness,
Present,
Aware,
Untouched by definition.
Nothing needs to be investigated.
Nothing needs to be managed or understood.
Naming may happen,
Thinking may continue.
Rest as the quiet presence of each experience,
Before interpretation.
Sound before the word,
Sensation before the label.
Seeing before recognition.
Lived experience,
Just as it first appears.
And what of awareness itself?
Is there a feeling?
A quiet sense?
A silent knowing,
That it is simply present,
Prior to the senses,
Untouched by thought.
Has it ever been absent?
Or eternally here,
All along?
Allow attention now to soften.
Not focusing,
Not searching,
Simply resting as open spaciousness.
Where each moment arises,
New,
Unfiltered.
Before thought,
Awareness is timelessly present.
Before a single word arises.
As this meditation seamlessly comes to a close,
Notice that the same quiet awareness remains,
Exactly as it is,
Eternally.
Thank you.
