Hey there!
Have you ever found yourself putting things off until the last minute,
Even when you know you shouldn't?
If so,
Don't worry,
You're not alone.
My name is Yvette and I'm a meditation teacher here on Insight Timer and a former procrastinator.
And did you know that there are actually different types of procrastinators?
And understanding your type can help you overcome it.
In this talk,
We will break down the six types of procrastinators,
I will give you an assessment test and provide personalized tips to help you to get things done.
So have pen and paper ready and let's dive in.
So I'm going to talk about six types of procrastinators.
And the first one is the perfectionist.
You avoid tasks because you're afraid of not doing them perfectly.
So the first one is the perfectionist.
The second one is the dreamer.
You love big ideas,
But you struggle with the execution.
So the second one is the dreamer.
The third one is the worrier.
You fear change or failure,
So you avoid taking action.
And the fourth one is the crisis maker.
You thrive on last-minute pressure and you leave things until the deadline.
The fifth one is the overdoer.
You take on too many tasks and you get overwhelmed.
And the final one,
The sixth one,
Is the avoider.
You put off tasks because they make you feel uncomfortable or judged.
And now I want to do a tiny self-assessment.
So have pen and paper ready.
And I want you to ground yourself for a moment,
So you can close your eyes.
Take a deep breath in through the nose and then hold it on top of your lungs.
And then release with a loud out sigh,
Like.
.
.
Where you really drop your shoulders when you do that.
So you breathe in through the nose.
You hold it and you release and drop your shoulders.
Let's do a bigger one.
Deep breath in.
Hold it and out through the mouth.
Now really stick your tongue out with your out breath.
Deep breath in.
And release.
Return to your natural breath.
Relax your jaw.
Drop that tongue in your mouth and listen for a moment to the singing bowl.
Now I want you to press your feet firmly into the ground.
And focus on your left foot.
Press it.
And now focus on your right foot.
And now press both feet firmly into the ground.
And imagine the earth beneath your feet.
Feel the energy flowing there.
And I want you to take a final deep breath in and release.
You can open your eyes or you can keep them closed.
And I'm going to ask you a couple of questions.
And remember if your answer is.
.
.
Well,
For the first one,
It's a general question.
But for the other question,
Remember how many A,
B,
C,
Ds,
Etc.
You have.
So I just talked about the six types of procrastination types.
The perfectionist.
The dreamer.
The worrier.
The crisis maker.
The overdoer and the avoider.
When I first explained these,
What type came to mind first?
To what type do you relate most?
Or maybe it's a mixture.
And do you think you're a different type of procrastinator in a different situation?
For example,
Family,
Work?
Good,
Just be honest.
That's all you can do right now.
So imagine you have a big project due.
What is your biggest concern?
Is it A.
It won't be perfect,
So I hesitate to start?
Is it B.
I get excited about it,
But struggle to finish?
Is it C.
I feel anxious and unsure if I can handle it?
Is it D.
I wait until the last minute to feel motivated?
Or is it E.
I have so much to do,
I don't know where to begin?
Or is it F.
I avoid it because I don't like the task or fear of judgement?
So when you have a big project due,
What's your biggest concern?
Being a perfectionist,
A?
Being B.
The dreamer?
Being C.
The worrier?
Being D.
The crisis maker?
Being E.
The overdoer?
And F.
The avoider?
So next question.
What is your typical work style?
Is it A.
I overthink and tweak things endlessly?
So the perfectionist.
Is it B.
I daydream about ideas more than I act on them?
So the dreamer.
Or is it C.
I hesitate and worry before taking action?
The worrier.
Is it D.
I work best under last minute pressure?
So the deadline chaser.
Is it E.
If I say yes to too many things,
I get overwhelmed?
So the overdoer.
And F.
I procrastinate on tasks because they make me feel uncomfortable?
The avoider.
Now three questions to go.
4.
What causes your procrastination the most?
A.
Fear of not doing it perfectly?
B.
Struggling to focus and follow through?
C.
Fear of failure or making mistakes?
D.
Waiting for the rush of an urgent deadline?
E.
Having too much on your plate?
And F.
Feeling unmotivated by certain tasks?
For question.
.
.
The next question is How do you feel when you finally start working on a task you've been procrastinating on?
Is it A.
I keep doubting if it's good enough?
B.
I get distracted by many new ideas?
C.
I feel nervous and second guess myself?
D.
I feel energized because the pressure is on?
E.
I get frustrated because there's just so much to do?
And F.
I feel relieved but still I wish I could avoid it?
And the final question How would you react when you miss a deadline?
A.
I would feel guilty and dwell on what I could have done better?
B.
I tell myself I'll do better next time but I won't change?
C.
I feel anxious and worry about the consequences?
D.
I justify it by saying I work better under pressure?
E.
I blame it on having too much on my plate?
F.
I try to avoid thinking about it altogether?
So how would you react when you miss a deadline?
Now for the results You already guessed it probably If you have mostly A.
You're a perfectionist If you have mostly B.
You're a dreamer Mostly C.
You're a worrier Not a warrior but a worrier Excuse my English If it are mostly D.
You're a crisis maker And if you're E.
You're an overdoer And F.
You're a voider Now on to the final bit You probably have a better idea of what type of procrastinator you are And I give a little bit of a homework assignment Don't just look at it today Think about the next week When you are what type of procrastinator I think awareness is key And also know that there are things you can do I have a couple of very general tips here But it's really important to make a difference between the types So for the perfectionist It's really important to set realistic goals and deadlines And I think what would help What I've also done Is to get an accountability partner This can be a professional like a therapist or a teacher But it can also be a friend And I think this is really helpful Because I'm also a former perfectionist And I didn't know what was a realistic goal So I needed to sometimes talk with an accountability partner And remind yourself That done is better than perfect Especially when I work with my students Who are writing their thesis I'm like better to hand it in Than to never graduate And use the 80-20 rule Focus on what truly matters I'm also now working for example With a perfectionist Who was really going through their APA sources And That was taking them like already two weeks And it's really important to sometimes let that go If you only have one week left Would you rather have a six for your paper Than have nothing at all Right For the dreamer I would suggest To break big ideas Into small actionable steps And For dreamers it's really handy To have a to-do list with deadlines With Rewards For completing tasks Even small Small tasks Like hey you did it For the worriers It's important to challenge Those thoughts And reframe them So challenge negative thoughts Ask what's the worst that could happen Why why why And I'm going to talk more about each type I have more specific tips But this is a general one And take small steps To build confidence And again focus on progress Not perfection Just like with the perfectionist And for the crisis makers Set artificial deadlines Before the real ones Or even agree With for example if you have a teacher No give me a deadline sooner Right And work in shorts For example work with the Pomodoro Time management technique And find ways To create motivation without stress Because indeed Be mindful of that Addiction to stress hormones And for the overdoer Learn to say no As it sounds so easy Say no And prioritize your tasks And delegate when possible What could be helpful Is to use a time blocking Management technique To manage your workload The avoider It's important That they reframe their task As opportunities to grow Instead of being Afraid of them Change your perspective Of hey this is something I can learn And grow from And for them it's really the importance Of the 2 minute or the 5 minute Just get started Or do a tiny task and then do Your most difficult task And again set an external Accountability buddy A study buddy,
A coach,
A timer But some of these tips They made Well when I wrote them down I had a little bit of a do If I could have done this I would have Right So I Made a lot of meditations Here on inside timer right And I think for every Procrastinator It's really important and I'm going to give A very brief summary Is self compassion So that you can grow If you procrastinate so that you can Grow and learn from it It's also emotional regulation I Noticed that with a lot of these Types they have fear They have anxiety around certain things And of course Mindfulness and meditation So for the perfectionist for example You avoid tasks because You're afraid of not doing them perfectly I have Even a course On imperfection on inside timer So please go check that one out And I have many Many talks about being a perfectionist And for the worrier You fear change Or failure So you avoid taking action I've got multiple talks And meditations on inside timer About emotional regulation So go check it out And for the crisis maker Who thrive on last minute Pressures If they want to change For some it might be interesting To listen to my talks About time management And for the avoiders Who feel otherwise uncomfortable And judged I even have a Of course I talk about emotional regulation But perhaps a grounding meditation I've posted on inside timer Might help So please Let me know if you found this Helpful And I hope together We can beat procrastinating behavior But please For a week Check out what type of procrastinator you are And what type of situation And re-listen to the tips again And go check out my meditations On inside timer
