["Pomp and Circumstance"] ["Pomp and Circumstance"] Hadi yum to everyone.
Happy Thursday on this side of the globe,
Friday morning in Australia,
Hong Kong,
Singapore.
We get to go deeper into the philosophy of yoga.
Patanjali is,
We're coming to the last two niyamas.
First he lists the eight limbs,
And then he breaks it down,
The first two limbs,
Into five other sub-branches.
And first he lists them,
And now he's explaining why,
Or what's the benefit to do it,
Because he understands the human mind.
If you tell someone to do something,
The person will say,
Why,
What's the benefit of me doing something?
So he's going through the benefits of us practicing the niyamas,
Our social conduct,
And our personal conduct.
And it's just natural.
If you meet anyone in any spiritual path,
You will see they naturally practice these.
It's not something imposing,
You naturally don't want to steal,
You naturally want to be clean,
You naturally want to,
You know,
They're there,
Listed like this,
But I've met a lot of amazing spiritual practitioners from different spiritual pathways.
They all,
Once they live in it,
They all have these natural qualities and tendencies,
How they relate to society.
Right?
So it's natural.
It's the nature of this spiritual being.
Patanjali just breaks it down in such a way,
Makes it,
Oh wow,
Such a beautiful way of presenting it.
So here we just finished Mantra 43.
So where 43,
He stressed the benefits of having a body that's purified through austerities.
Yep.
And so now,
As we come to 44,
He says,
By study of spiritual books comes communion with one's chosen deity.
This is amazing how he writes this.
And I remember when I read it for the first time,
Because remember I was brought up as a,
You know,
Christian culture and I was taught there is only one way,
One book,
Through Jesus Christ.
That's the way I was trained as I keep growing up.
But as I started to expand my consciousness,
I started to question and here Patanjali writes in such a beautiful way.
He is extremely understanding of the nature of God.
He understands that according to the time,
Place you're born into,
You will naturally be able to gravitate to God in a certain way.
One thing the Veras did for me was to expand my consciousness to understand,
Wait,
This universe is vast.
And we're not just living on one planet.
There's so many planets in this universe.
And that means if other planets,
God just didn't create thousands of planets and have one planet inhabited,
Right?
Oh,
Many planets,
Many.
And I was like,
Wow,
Blew my mind away.
Because we only live on the earth planet,
We think,
Oh,
Maybe it's just here.
But if we are able to travel to other planets,
Like,
Oh,
Wait,
It's different.
So the Bhagavatam,
The Mahabharata,
They tell us about living entities on different planetary systems.
So if you're on different planetary systems,
We're not limiting God to just one way.
I like what he says here.
But he says you can,
He says,
I study of spiritual books.
So the yogis understand books is a vibration,
Right?
It's a vibration of Atman's evolution.
So when you go into a bookstore,
I like going into bookstores.
And when I go into a bookstore and I go in between shelves,
I just kind of close my eyes and try and connect to the vibration of the authors.
Because whatever is on ink and paper came out of a person's mental space.
So when you're reading a book,
You're connecting to a vibration.
Like we're reading the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali,
It's a vibration we're connecting with.
So the rishis,
They explain God has shoved up Brahman through some vibration.
And we're not going to limit God to just one sound vibration.
He makes a beautiful point at the end of it.
He says,
Of your chosen deity.
This is beautiful.
And when I came across this the first time,
It kind of woke me up because I'm on a planet.
I was trained as a Christian,
Jesus by Christ and all this.
But then as I started to travel,
I came across Buddhists.
I came across Islam.
Just on this one planet,
There are so many different spiritual paths.
I think,
You know,
They kind of say they're like seven world religions.
But there are many other spiritual paths,
Not just seven major religious paths.
Right.
So according to as I started to travel and I started to meet people from different faiths.
It kind of expanded my consciousness.
Wait,
Wait,
Wait.
Charu,
Why do I think like a Christian?
Because I was born in a place where Christianity was dominant.
And I asked myself if I was born in Saudi Arabia.
The probability of me being an Islam is very high.
If I was born in Tibet.
The probability of me being a Buddhist,
Very high.
If I was to whichever part of the planet we are born,
We develop a karmic potential,
Explains in the earlier part of this chapter.
We develop a certain body type,
A language.
We develop also a certain level of spirituality.
So whichever part of the planet you are born,
You will be influenced by a certain spiritual pathway as well.
And it takes a very open minded person to recognize that there is many ways to God.
Just as the example is given,
Just as how many names of the sun are there.
Right.
In English,
We say sun.
In Spanish,
You say so.
In French,
Soleil.
In Sanskrit,
We say so real.
So different languages have a different word for God.
Now,
If you have a room with so many different people speaking different languages and they say the word for God,
For the sun,
They're referring to the sun.
So similarly,
When you whichever part of the planet you are born,
You develop a certain connection with divinity.
True,
A certain spirituality to a certain deity.
Unfortunately,
In this age,
We're living in Kali Yuga,
People like to argue.
And why do people like to argue over religion?
Because they want to feel it's the false ego,
The ahaankar.
They want to feel that they are doing the right thing and that theirs is the best.
That's the false ego.
There's nothing wrong with you want to know that you are doing the right thing.
There's nothing wrong with that.
But the second we start to compare it with another person,
We are missing the beauty of the spiritual path.
Sometimes there's a lot of spiritual people that tolerate each other rather than embracing another language,
Another being,
Another spiritual path and understand,
Wow,
God came to that person through that path.
It's only my path,
One of my path.
Now,
This is narrow mindedness and trying to narrow divinity.
I've met some amazing spiritual beings and I've came to that place where,
Wow,
I can see the love for God coming out through devotion from their culture.
It's not just on a one culture as God can come in many ways.
God can speak to each and every one of us.
So just as there will be a different form of deity according to which part of the planet you are born,
There's also a different song vibration book,
A spiritual book that you can connect to.
And I asked my teacher this once and he said,
Tarrou,
There are a lot of spiritual,
We call them the spiritual texts,
Which are ancient,
He says,
Right?
For look around the planet,
We have the,
We're studying the Vedas,
The Bible,
The Quran,
The Torah,
Right?
So many ancient books,
But what are these books?
They're vibrations written by a being who was connecting to Paramatma in the heart,
God in the heart.
They got so pure,
They were able to channel pure wisdom coming out.
Now over time,
Right?
These books get translated and as they are translated,
The people who translate them sometime are biased and we get a watered down or an incomplete presentation of the high spiritual experience.
So then if that's always a possibility,
Then why is it that God can connect to each and every one of us right now the same way like those ancient rishis?
So my teacher used to tell me,
Tarrou,
God is connecting to each and every one of us right now.
And you can learn and evolve from each and every one.
And that's one of my,
What I like to do if I'm not reading spiritual texts like this,
I like reading biographies.
Because when you read a biography,
You're connecting to a spiritual being and how they go through their ups and downs and how they,
You see amazing spiritual qualities come out from people.
We can't limit spiritual texts to just ancient.
God existed ancient and he also exists right now.
So as we start to evolve,
We can connect to divinity right now.
It's just vibration,
Song vibration.
It's nice to consult the ancient texts because we can see how ancient spiritual people were able to evolve and act.
But that doesn't mean a deep spiritual text cannot come out right now in 2020.
Because God is always living and he can connect to any one of us right now.
So I'm pretty sure besides ancient texts,
Many of you have read books that allowed you to evolve spiritually,
Right?
I'll just give a few examples of some texts that I read,
Which helped me to evolve as I read them.
I like the writings of Paulo Coelho.
I like,
It was the alchemists,
And things like,
You know,
Books like that triggers your intellect.
So each and every one of us is a vibration.
And as we evolve,
What comes out of us,
Right?
Can be in tune with the ancient texts.
Now,
In my country I'm born,
I was born in the Yucatan Peninsula.
So I grew up with Mayans,
My Mayan friends in school.
It wasn't until I got into the yoga culture that I could relate to the Mayan culture.
I understand,
Oh wow,
There's deep spirituality that the Mayans had a long time ago.
So as my consciousness expands,
I realize,
Oh wow,
There's so many languages on this planet.
God can,
And who created those languages?
Who created our voice box?
God created it.
So God can create so many spiritual texts as well.
And not only on this one planet,
But on all the other planets.
There are so many ways to connect to divinity and the people who,
As they connect to divinity through their samadhi,
They will leave texts or writings behind to inspire us.
So when I read the Vedas,
There's a part of the Vedas where it's called Das Avatars.
Das in Sanskrit means ten avatars,
Incarnations.
So it says there are ten major incarnations.
And when I was reading it,
It's like,
Oh,
God can incarnate as a turtle,
God can incarnate as a boar,
God can incarnate as a human.
In other words,
All the species of life,
God can incarnate himself through them,
Because he created them.
And then it says these are the ten major ones,
And they're unlimited minor incarnations.
So the Vedas doesn't limit God to one path.
No.
Every species has that potential to reconnect to divinity as well,
Not just the human species.
It's easier in a human species.
But still,
When you start to read the Das Avatar,
The incarnation,
Oh wow,
Fish,
This,
That I was like,
Oh,
Man,
It just expands the mind.
So as we start to evolve,
Paramatma,
The Lord in our heart,
Which resides with us in this incarnation,
Is going to give us wisdom to break through earlier in this chapter,
The ignorance that are there.
And as those ignorance are removed through the eight limbs of yoga,
What you will get,
Each and every one of us will get a divine connection with our chosen deity.
So as you evolve,
You will have an experience which is unique to you.
It might come,
And again,
If you're born in a certain part of the planet,
Your deity is already karmically previously,
Before you even took birth,
You chose your deity.
So you will connect to it,
To that deity,
And you start to evolve.
So as you start to evolve,
More and more,
Your inner deity will start to manifest self-seal.
And depending on,
You know,
How deep you go.
So one of the things the yogis do for our self-evolution is to study spiritual books.
And once you,
Like we're doing right now,
And once you start to study spiritual books,
It's,
Pratyen said there's a benefit,
The benefit is you start to reconnect to your deity of choice.
So it's not an imposing thing.
You cannot tell someone to believe in a rock or to believe in a mountain.
No,
No,
It's not about belief.
Yoga is an inner experience.
As your heart and mind becomes pure,
You will make that connection with that inner deity.
It's already there.
We just got to go with it and find when the mind becomes purer and purer and purer.
And the Vedas,
Because it's so,
So open to people's perception.
Like earlier in the sutra pattern,
He says,
Focus your mind on this,
Focus your mind on the guru,
Focus the mind on the ah mantra,
Focus your mind on just do something to focus your mind.
And at the end he says,
Look,
If all of those work,
Doesn't work for you,
You come from a culture where you don't accept mantra,
You don't accept guru,
You don't accept a deity,
Then just focus your mind on something that is uplifting.
That's how liberal and open the Vedas are.
So as you start to purify yourself by studying the books,
The deity starts to connect with it and we start to get these realizations.
Oh,
Wow.
I'm not on this journey alone.
I've been given so much help in this incarnation.
I mean,
Just look at our amazing organism,
Right?
The brain,
The brain stem,
The backbone,
The spine and the nerves,
How it all comes together.
It's beyond our mental power.
So just recognize,
Oh wow,
There's a higher forces working around them.
We're in this universe,
See so many planets in the sky at night.
In the daytime,
The sun and the moon,
Amazing.
What's this all about?
Then we request,
Oh wow,
There must be a higher force around us.
And as the mind gets quieter and you study the books,
The books from these great rishis,
They will take you on a beautiful journey.
And Patanjali says,
Even in his book,
He says,
Books will only take us so far.
So in other words,
Each author of those books can only take you so far.
At the end of the day,
Each and every one of us will get our own unique experience of divinity.
So that's the beauty of spiritual life.
It's an individual thing.
Simultaneously,
We like this song because it inspires us with like-minded people.
But when I reach my ultimate samadhi,
Which he's going to say in the next mantra,
When you reach your samadhi,
It will be similar.
But if me and you go write a book,
It'll be so different because we are a unique spiritual being.
There's no two cherub,
There's no two of you,
Unique personality.
That's the,
It says,
By study of spiritual books comes communion with one chosen deity.
And then the last niyama,
He says,
Is,
And by,
When you find your deity and by total surrender to God,
If you surrender yourself to divinity,
To God,
Something happens.
Samadhi is attained.
So this samadhi manifests itself when we can surrender ourselves to God.
As I explained before,
Surrender doesn't mean it's done by force.
Surrender is done out of love.
When we love someone,
We surrender our mind,
Body,
And heart to that being.
When our kids love us,
Kids,
They surrender to the instructions.
The parents love the kids,
The parents surrender to the kids' evolution.
When you're working in a loving atmosphere at work,
People raise their vibration and start to surrender so that the project moves forward.
People give up their own personal ideas to the project to sort of love manifest through it.
And like I explained,
You cannot,
You know,
You can't force someone to love you.
So God is not trying to force us to love.
God is God.
I mean,
And this is just an English term,
English word for a higher force,
A divinity.
That's amazing intelligence which creates this universe.
Yes?
So that divinity is already complete.
Now,
When we look in our own mind,
Body,
Organism,
We find a lot of chaos,
A lot of ignorance.
So when we start to practice these eight limbs,
Clarity comes,
Ignorance disappear,
Wisdom comes.
And from wisdom,
Action comes.
And a sign of your action is,
A sign of your wisdom is your action.
And your action is not give and take,
Tick for tat.
The action is unmotivated,
Uninterrupted,
Pure love of surrender.
So when the mind gets there,
We can get that quiet,
Beautiful place.
It's there for every one of us.
Each and every one of us have this pure love in us already.
And we surrender our love in our hearts to another living being.
Right?
If you have a pet,
A plant,
A fellow human,
We surrender some of our heart space to that living being.
Just to reconnect with the earth,
We surrender our love to the planet Earth.
When you will witness the sun,
We get so many gifts,
We surrender our love for the sun.
Right?
We surrender our love to the moon,
To the water,
To the breath.
And when you expand the mind more,
You connect,
Oh wow,
Then you surrender that love to divinity,
To God.
And the more we can do that,
The more we can start to relate.
He calls it samadhi,
Samadhi.
You're in a trance.
My teacher used to say,
A trance step of love.
Wow.
Could you imagine you meet someone who is in a trance state of love?
It means they're always trying to share that love with intelligence,
Not whimsical,
With intelligence.
And with that love means that in a relationship with the planet,
In a relationship with another living entity,
They're always trying to serve that living entity,
Serve that planet,
Serve.
And when you get two beings,
Right,
A person and another person,
They connect on pure love with each other.
This person wants to serve this person out of pure love.
This person wants to serve this person out of pure love.
We have a competition of service.
That's the spiritual world.
Today,
No one wants to serve.
Everyone wants to be served.
I am better than you.
I'm greater.
I'm greater.
And we miss.
So the samadhi,
The trance state of love,
Means your mind,
Your body,
Your intellect is all understanding that these are all gifts around you.
And every living entity is also an amazing gift of God.
Because a lot of people fall,
But I see people as they evolve partially,
They fall in love with God and only their pathways.
And then they want to push down another race.
Now,
If you meet someone who is evolved with love of God,
They can share it to every living entity free from any discrimination.
And I got this,
I might have to tell the story,
I got this realization as a young,
I was like maybe 21.
I had left the Himalayas and I went to South India.
The most southern tip of India is a place called Kanyakumari.
And I always wanted to go into it because you can see the sunrise and you can see the sunset,
The same place.
And I remember me and a few of my friends got down there and,
You know,
We're just in the yoga attire.
So you can see.
And we got there,
We got up at like four o'clock,
Went to go up to the Kanyakumari.
And it was so cloudy.
There was no,
So as the sun came up,
No one saw the sun.
It was cloudy,
Cloudy,
Cloudy.
No sun rose.
The clouds just covered our eyes,
Right?
And this one elderly Muslim gentleman,
He was like at least 75 or 80 years old.
He had on his Muslim hat and his Muslim attire and everything.
And then he saw me and he could see I was,
He sensed I was not Indian.
And here I'm in like my yoga robes.
It's like you call Hindu robes,
Right?
Anyway,
But here this elderly gentleman came up to me and said,
Hello,
Yogi.
He says,
God,
Allah,
God,
Allah didn't want us to see the sunrise today.
And just the way he said it,
I'm out of love.
I was like,
Wow,
Here was someone from who follows a spiritual path,
Which is different from that,
But could see that I was a spiritual being just like him,
Free from the external dress.
This is what Samadhi,
The trance of love state is.
And I remember it had such a deep impact on me that when,
Because when you're traveling in India,
There's this tension of Muslim,
Hindu,
They're always,
Every now and then there's always this friction and riots with.
So sometimes you're going,
Oh,
This is a Muslim tongue when I would be on pilgrimage,
Or this is in the,
You run into those things.
But when he did that,
I was like,
Wow,
It opened up something in my consciousness.
So,
And I could see he was that evolved.
He didn't see me as an external,
Someone from another country or another religion.
He saw me as a spiritual.
And both of us,
God didn't want us to see,
Allah didn't want us to see the sun rise.
Wow,
That's evolution.
So as we start to evolve,
That's where we want to refer to the trance state of love.
The intellect is purified.
The heart is purified.
The mind is purified.
And with that love pervading,
Then you see every other living entity,
Not for you to exploit,
But for you to serve with pure love.
And in true service to other living entity,
Out of love,
People's good qualities starts to come out more and more and more.
Every one of us.
Whenever you see two people competing to serve each other,
It's beautiful.
If you see that,
That is the spiritual world.
That is Samadhi state.
So the more and more we want to do that to our capacity,
Don't go after,
No,
No,
It will come organically from within.
Right.
Gradually as we evolve.
Right.
Naturally,
We will start with our family or friends or pets.
But then when we meet someone from another religion,
Still offer that service of love from your heart.
I have a lot of friends who are nurses,
Doctors,
And they don't discriminate when someone comes into their office.
No,
They heal everyone.
So if doctors can do it,
A spiritual seeker should also do it.
Don't hold grudges for externals.
Someone's ethnicity,
Someone's economic development,
Someone's,
You know,
See them as a spiritual being.
And when you see them as a spiritual being,
With intelligence,
With the spiritual books,
Right,
The spiritual books will purify your intelligence.
And to that degree,
Wow,
That vibration pervades all of us and then want to serve each other.
And by surrendering to each other,
Indirectly,
We are surrendering to God.
You can't just surrender to God and want to kill everyone else.
You surrender to God,
Means you surrender to God across the board.
All of God's children.
All of them.
That's a high platform.
We can't artificially because some humans are so toxic,
Right?
So like,
The sutras,
Right,
In book 134,
Love from a distance some humans.
You just have to love them from a distance.
And even that,
If you do that little distance,
That's an art of surrendering to the power of love still.
We don't want to give that up.
And that completes the five yamas and the five niyamas.
And then now he's going to go on the third limb,
What is asan,
Then pranayama,
He's going to continue and go through book two.
Let's stretch the legs out.
Wiggle the ankles,
The knees.
And cross the legs back,
Come into a nice,
Comfortable seated posture.
Use the power of your legs,
Push the legs down,
Lift the spine tall.
Close the eyes softly.
Bring the whole body into stillness,
Kaya styram.
As the body moves into stillness,
Patanjali explains,
The mode of goodness kicks in.
And now let's bring the mode of goodness in the mind.
Let's concentrate the mind on the breath,
Keeping the mind in the present moment at the entrance of the nostrils.
Try not to control the breath,
Just witness it moving in and out.
And now let's go to the next one.
I want you to curl the tip of your tongue on the upper palate as far back as you can,
Catch your mudra.
And let's do the suaning sound of the breath,
Ujjayi pranayama.
Slowly in and slowly out,
And allow your mind to dwell into the ocean-like sound of the breath.
And now let's go to the next one.
And now let's go to the next one.
After the next exhalation,
Return the tongue to the bottom of the mouth and move into mona pranayama,
The opposite of ujjayi pranayama,
Silent breathing.
Breathe slowly as possible,
Silently as possible,
And allow the mind to dwell into the silence of the breath.
And now let's go to the next one.
I want you to keep your breath silent and now project your awareness to the space behind the forehead.
And I want you to move back into your memory,
And I want you to contemplate the culture you were born into and the spiritual text that was provided by your culture that allowed you to grow spiritually.
And recognize that spiritual text is a vibration from the author's mind and their evolution.
They brought it from the mental world into the three-dimensional realm as they bring it from ink to paper.
And recognize that spiritual text 95% of the time must have been a translation.
And recognize that maybe some of it was not translated as purely as it was tend to be.
If you,
In your upbringing,
If you had exposure to another ancient text,
Bring that vibration in the mind as well.
Grateful for that text.
Grateful to the author of the text.
And now we're exploring the Yoga Sutras,
Bringing that amazing text in the mind,
And recognize it's a vibration of the author Patanjali.
And it's brought from the mental,
The astral realm,
The sattva realm,
From the mind,
From the heart space,
The mind,
The intellect into ink and leaf.
Grateful for the Yoga Sutras.
And these are texts from ancient times,
But the yogis recognize God is present right among us right now.
I want you to recognize different books you've read that raised your spirituality as well,
Even though they were written in this century,
Maybe in the last 10 years,
20 years,
30 years,
And recognize those texts that allowed you to evolve came out of a spiritual plane,
Then through the intellect,
Through the mind,
Into the pen and ink and paper.
Grateful for that text.
Grateful for the author.
And you know that the book you read triggered your higher self because it allowed you to develop wisdom,
To remove the ignorance.
It allowed you to cultivate this amazing love that's in the heart and this universal love of appreciating every living entity as an extension of God.
And it allowed you to want to not just love those beings,
But to serve God's creation,
Serve the earth,
Serve the plants,
Serve the animals,
Serve every human being across the board.
That type of literature is non-sectarian.
Love is universal,
And we can surrender to God by surrender to loving service to God's creation.
Each and every one of us taps into it from time to time.
I want you to remember when you serve someone out of pure love who was in another spiritual designation.
They were born in a different part of the planet,
So they have a different spiritual outlook,
But you can still,
You still found the love in your heart to love them and serve them.
Our doctors and nurses,
They do it every day because they have a high level of compassion.
And as a spiritual seeker,
This level of compassion naturally comes into us.
We can serve others across the board.
The yogis call it the trance of love,
Samadhi,
Loving service to every living entity across the board.
For the next couple of minutes,
Just sit still and bring into your consciousness someone who you met who exemplified that claim,
Someone who doesn't judge others for their skin color,
Their ethnic group,
Their economic balance,
Their intellectual balance,
Because that person sees them as a spiritual being and just wants to love them from that high plane and serve them.
Each and every one of us have met someone like that.
Bring that person in your consciousness and it's like you having that high vibration being,
It starts to rub off on the consciousness of yours.
One word,
Phlegm,
Very good.
Let that being out of the consciousness.
And I want you to search your own consciousness and remember a time when you felt so much connection and gratitude to God's love around you that you were able to reflect that even if it was just for half a day or one hour or 10 minutes or five minutes,
You connected to people,
The planet by God's power through service to everyone.
Remember a time when that expression came through you.
That's that trance state of love.
Asamadhi state.
Very good.
Want to keep that memory on the forefront of our consciousness.
We can tap into that power regularly,
Constantly again and again and again,
Just as how God is constantly,
Showing us his love through the breath.
Focus your mind back on the breath at the entrance of the nostrils and recognize this is God's unconditional love to us,
Providing us with the breath.
The breath is there for every living being,
Even if you're from a different religion or a different path,
God still gives the breath to everyone non-sectarian.
That's what love is.
As we come to an end of the journey,
Let's chant the Om mantra together once.
Move the fingers slowly,
Bring the palms to the heart,
Lower your head to the higher self.
That's spiritual loving being whom you are towards Paramahama,
The deity of your heart.
Namaste.
Thank you all so much for sharing your sangha with us.
I wish you have a quiet evening.
Take your experiences off the meditation cushion today and share that love in the heart.
Surrender,
Right?
It means a lot of love to your family,
Your friends,
Your plants,
Your pets,
To the planet.
Compete with another living entity to serve them.
That's the spiritual.
