Meet your challenging feelings on the spot, and learn to access their wisdom. This practice was led at Vallecitos Mountain Refuge in New Mexico, for a group made up primarily of psychotherapists. The meditation is informed by Tsoknyi Rinpoche's Handshake Practice (a practice that extends from the Mahamudra Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism).

Let us come down from the thinking mind into the feeling body.

Noticing this all over the aliveness of the body.

Inquire.

Into what kind of feeling residue is there this evening.

What beautiful monster has left its traces in your body mind.

Notice where this feeling resides in the body.

Perhaps in the heart or abdomen.

Looking to see where your feeling residue has taken up residence.

In your energy body.

Just bearing witness.

Sensing into the feeling in your subtle body.

And just come alongside.

You're feeling this beautiful monster.

And just shake hands with the feeling.

Making room.

You might say to the feeling,

You are welcome here.

In this guest house of my body.

I will not try to fix you.

I will not try to avoid you.

I will not suppress you.

I will not try to escape you.

Beautiful feeling.

I will not analyze you.

I will not try to placate you.

I will not scold you.

I will not fight with you.

I will not discipline you.

I will not try to wish you away.

I will come alongside you.

And be your friend.

I will not tell you beautiful feeling what I think you should do.

I will not take the Dharma and heap it on top of you.

I will just be present with you.

Beautiful feeling.

I will not even try to teach you something.

Instead I will ask you to show me your wisdom.

In your own time.

When you are ready.

I will see what you have to show me.

Until then let us stay and practice together.

Beautiful feeling.

I will not tell you beautiful feeling what I think you should do.

Just stay with whatever you feel.

Just staying with whatever is present.

As the loving witness is enough.

I will not tell you beautiful feeling what I think you should do.

Just stay with whatever is present.

Just stay with whatever is present.

Just stay with whatever is present.

Just stay with whatever is present.

Just stay with whatever is present.

Really nice meditation particularly for an uncomfortable emotion that one might be struggling with which I don't have at the time, but helped distract me from the pain of my pulled back muscle. A good lesson about befriending ourselves.

A way to integrate difficult parts without trying to fix ourselves is very helpful. Thanks

Lama Willa's teaching of befriending our feelings is a gift. The wisdom in this teaching, to sit with our feelings without judgment, is what allows them to transform. As one of my primary teachers, I know her to be deeply grounded in Tibetan Buddhist practice, deeply compassionate in her work, and very humble. I highly recommend attending any of her retreat programs.

I like the practice. Since it seems like an established practice is going on it would be nice to have a bit of a beginning. Thank you!
