Your Grief Is Holy
by Lisa Nagel
This practice is for you if you've experienced loss (of any kind) and are in need of comfort, of a moment of honoring what has been. It facilitates a sacred pause in your day to recharge and soften into your experience.
Transcript
Your grief is holy.
Gently close your eyes.
Allow yourself to gently arrive in this moment.
Allow your body to sink deeper into its current pose.
Allow your breath to flow freely and naturally.
No need to force,
Fix or push.
Just letting it flow as it wants to today and right now.
And allow yourself to bring the full weight of your body here.
The full weight of your heart,
Your mind,
Your soul right now.
Everything is welcome in this space.
Everything is valid,
Worthy,
Sacred.
As you settle in,
Just notice if you're feeling any tension anywhere in your body.
If there are any feelings of overwhelm,
Of worry,
Of fear,
Just notice.
Maybe scan your body from the tip of your toes to the top of your head.
Slowly and softly scanning it for any tension,
Any overwhelm,
Any fear,
Worry,
Confusion.
Maybe anger,
Tenderness.
Whatever feelings want to show up today,
Know that they are welcome.
They're valid and worthy,
So deeply,
Deeply sacred.
And as you notice your feelings,
Your emotions,
Your body,
I want to invite you to release any of them if you wish as you breathe out and exhale.
Really trust that your body knows how to let go.
It knows how to release any of these feelings or emotions you're feeling.
It knows how to let go of tension,
Of overwhelm,
Of confusion.
It knows how to take care of you.
It knows how to release any of these feelings if you wish to let them go.
So as you breathe,
Allow yourself to let them go if that feels good today,
If that feels right for you today.
Just as you're breathing,
Know that you don't have to change anything about the way you are breathing,
Sitting.
There's nothing you need to change in order for this to work,
In order for your body to be able to release any of this because your body knows how to do this.
And trust your body.
Trust your breath,
Your natural breath to do and work its magic.
Just breathe here for a moment,
Letting the breath flow into your lungs and letting it go.
If that feels right for you today and good for you today,
Doable,
You can release your breath with a sigh or with some noise if that feels good and comfortable.
Breathe gently and softly here,
Giving yourself full permission to let go of whatever you wish to let go of right now.
You don't need to force any of this to happen.
Allow yourself to let it happen and flow naturally.
Take a moment to notice your body,
To feel if there are any parts or any spaces,
Places in your body that have been feeling unloved or maybe not as well taken care of.
And if you can,
Gently place your hands on those parts of your body,
Just acknowledging those parts,
Seeing and feeling those parts,
Allowing yourself to invite them into this moment.
Sit with them for a moment.
Sit with whatever arises within you in this moment.
Take a couple of more deep breaths in and out,
Letting your breath flow naturally and with ease.
And as you sit here,
I want to invite you into 99 seconds of silence,
Silence to honor your grief,
To give space to your grief,
To honor what has been,
What maybe never was and maybe never will be.
These 99 seconds don't have to be perfect and if it feels good,
You can place a hand on your heart,
On your belly to really feel into those places and spaces where we often feel tenderness and our grief.
Take one more deep breath in and out before we begin and allow these 99 seconds to be as raw,
As wild,
As soft,
As tender,
As real as they want to be today.
And I will be there with you throughout this silence and I will catch you on the other side of those silent moments.
And just keep your eyes closed for another moment and receive these words if you can today.
May my grief be of service.
May my grief soften what is feeling hard and harsh within me.
May my grief call in all that feels abandoned within me.
May my grief transform all that is unloved into divine love.
May my grief open me.
May it help me be present.
May my willingness to accept this invitation be enough.
May my willingness to be here and present be enough.
May my willingness to soften be enough.
May my willingness to meet the raw,
The wild,
The tender on this journey be enough.
May my willingness to respect the path and its pace be enough.
May my willingness to lay down my weapons of numbing,
Of distraction,
Of overprotecting myself be enough.
May my willingness to move with this invitation be enough.
May my grief remind me of the wisdom that lives within my bones.
May my grief open me far and wide.
May my grief awaken the memory of resilience that's been within me all along.
May my grief bless me.
May my grief have a purpose.
May my grief be of service.
Allow yourself to stay in this moment for as long as you like.
And whenever you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
Allow yourself to have a few more minutes of calm,
Of cozy,
Of being there for yourself,
For your needs in this moment before you move into or forward with your day.

Thank you. My Dad recently passed away and I am having a hard time accepting it. This was calming and I realize that my grief can be channeled into something helpful.

A practice which allowed me to mindfully be aware of my physical and my heart responses to my grief. Within 14 months, I lost three close relatives and my long-time secretary (all but one relative in the last five months). The holidays are upon us and I feel it all so keenly. I also had a major surgery, which while successful, has required a lengthy period of ongoing restrictions that at times feel stifling. This practice was like a long, loving embrace as I acknowledged my grief and let it howl through me, all the while knowing I am safe to do so for these precious moments. Bookmarked and downloaded. Thank you so very much for sharing this practice with us here. I see the light in you. 🤲🏻❤️🤲🏻
