What actually is Kundalini?
You may have heard this word around the yogic traditions or yoga classes,
Different discussions.
We're going to explore what actually is it.
In summary,
Kundalini is a dormant energetic force in the human organism and it has a potential to blossom into creative intelligence and awaken super mental capabilities.
Kundalini also has the potential to manifest into a dark,
Overwhelming,
Intense energy.
I'm Dylan Smith and I'm here on Insight Timer as an Ayurvedic practitioner and holistic health educator who sees patients from many walks of life and some of those who are undergoing intense,
Overwhelming,
Spiritual awakening experiences or radical experiences,
Whether they are in the form of a dark energy or extremely blissful,
Ecstatic,
Almost orgasmic energy.
And this has sparked my desire to do more research into this field of Kundalini.
So I want to create some clarity around it and share with you a bit about it today.
Let's explore the meaning of the word Kundalini.
In Sanskrit,
Kundalini comes from the word kunda,
Which means a deeper place or a pit or a cavity.
The word kundala means a coil and Kundalini is typically described as something which is coiled but we can refer to kunda as the concave cavity in the brain,
This pit in the brain which also resembles a coiled or sleeping serpent that nestles in the brain.
So Kundalini refers to this power which in the Vedic sciences we call Shakti when it is in its dormant potential state.
But when Kundalini manifests,
It can manifest into abundance,
It can manifest into supreme creativity,
It can manifest into musical energy or creativity,
It can manifest as well into dark destructive energy.
This energy explodes in the brain and these sleeping areas of the brain start to blossom like flowers and therefore it can be equated with awakening these silent areas of the brain.
The ancient yogic text the Hatha Yoga Pradipika says the Kundalini sleeps above the kunda.
She gives liberation to the yogi and bondage to the fool.
The Kundalini it is said is coiled like a serpent.
He who can induce her to move is liberated.
So this verse from the ancient yogic text the Hatha Yoga Pradipika shows Kundalini can be giving liberation to the yogi but bondage to the fool.
So it has this capacity to manifest into a light state or a dark state.
Let's explore the location of Kundalini in human physiology or let's attempt to.
It's situated at the root of the spinal column in the masculine body that's the perineum between the urinary tract and the rectum.
In the female body it's also at the root of the uterus and the cervix.
In this center in the yogic sciences are known as Muladhara Chakra.
It is a physical structure,
It is a gland but although Kundalini linked the physical body it does not belong there.
It can't even be discovered in the mental body or even the astral body.
The abode of Kundalini is actually in what we call the casual body.
That's one way for saying the innermost body that veils the soul.
Part of the body where time and space and object are completely lost.
Kundalini is in other traditions.
In the Christian tradition they refer to it as the stairway to heaven and that refers to the Kundalini's ascent through the spinal cord.
Ultimately it's the descendant of spiritual grace when you look at the cross.
They touch the third eye,
The heart and the throat chakra and to the cross and this is enlivening the flow of Kundalini.
Kundalini is a force which is heavily beginning at the root of the spinal column and particularly goes up.
That is why people who have radical Kundalini awakening experiences can feel like there's an electric shock from the bottom of the spinal cord or a burning sensation in the perineum or energy passing up and through the spine.
Jolting of the spine can be a manifestation of Kundalini energy moving up the spine and cleansing the toxic accumulation in the spinal cord or it's cleansing the toxic accumulation in a chakra which is a concentrated energy nerve plex within the body.
This Kundalini moving around the spine when it's awakened it can manifest in different ways.
It can be a very intense,
Angry,
Dark,
Ferocious energy which people can experience when they're undergoing radical Kundalini experiences.
It can also be more refined and higher expression of pure consciousness where you're experiencing the beauty of life and ultimate creativity.
Usually Kundalini is mostly experienced as increased amount of blissfulness,
Increased amount of happiness,
Less fear,
Less anxiety,
Less anger.
When Kundalini flows those expansive qualities of human evolution manifest and that is a positive flow and a smooth path of Kundalini awakening.
But when it's radical it can be extremely blissful and ecstatic and orgasmic.
It can also be dark for those who don't know how to handle it.
People crave for Kundalini experiences kind of how some people crave for plant medicine experiences but ultimately we need to be grounded and be able to sustain our nervous system in a grounded state where we can sustain whether it's separation from someone or death from someone or even a bit of cheerfulness and excitement because some people can't even experience these everyday emotions without being grounded and therefore how is someone going to invite a radical Kundalini awakening experience.
But beyond the radical we can look at it in this flow of energy.
So I'm going to report one world-renowned scientist the late Itzhak Bentov put forward a modern scientific theory of Kundalini and he said that it's the rotation of nerve impulses around the cortex of the brain during meditation.
He considered that this is caused by rhythmical pressure waves which result from the interaction of the heartbeat the breathing and the fluid inside the skull thereby causing the brain to oscillate up and down which stimulates specific nerve currents in the brain.
This is one scientific explanation but ultimately it's awakening the brain,
Awakening the dormant areas of the brain and the physiology and this can result in so many different ways but ultimately it's an enlivening of the spiritual energy,
Enlivening of the flow of creative intelligence which can be achieved through many things like yoga,
Meditation.
Show on Insight Timer you'll find a bunch of Kundalini meditations and practices and it is important to mention that some people who having these radical Kundalini awakenings can be seen by the outside world by most people as being mad or psychotic and being wanting to put into a mental health ward which happens and I have worked with clients in this so it is important to just know it can get overwhelming it can get radical for the minority of people this happens but it's not necessarily at all a psychotic episode and that person requires some good support in the form of practitioners health practitioners and also yogi practitioners who are familiar with this and really that is where the word guru comes from.
Guru means heavy it means stable and the guru is especially there to stabilize people undergoing radical awakening experiences where they are absolutely unstable and very much air element and space element the guru is the ground of earth element which secures and navigates the spiritual aspirant through their radical experience.
So I hope that has given some introduction and to Kundalini it is important to know Kundalini is very much related with the chakras in the body as I said earlier it moves up through the spinal cord through the chakras and some people can have experience of jolting or some shifting or some shaking and that can be the Kundalini awakening is cleansing any toxic accumulation whether to the chakras or the spinal cord there's a subtle channel within the spinal cord in the yogic Ayurvedic tradition called the Sushumna and that is a very subtle channel which is about the size one hundredth one hundredth of a hair and that is traveling up the spinal cord and that is one of the main channels which Kundalini moves through.
So there's so many so so so many a dynamic array of experiences with Kundalini awakening whether it is hearing sounds,
Seeing things,
Feeling light,
Thinking of nothing but sex,
Thinking of nothing but food,
Not eating for days,
Insomnia,
Headaches,
Different emotions these are more radical experiences but it is such a dynamic experience for different people and it can express itself in different ways and we don't want to be suppressing these experiences we want to be working to move the energy in the right way that's a smooth way.
So I hope that's given a little introduction to Kundalini if you have any questions or want to share any experiences please leave a comment leave a review on Insight Timer I will be answering your comments and questions whether it's through text or leaving an audio message.
