Hello everyone,
Welcome to today's Insight Timer Live.
Can you give me a thumbs up that your sound is working and that the audio is good?
Today we are going to be speaking about one aspect of digestion,
One aspect about nutrition.
Thanks Janelle.
So today,
Also I want to hear where you're from as usual.
Let me know where you are in the world because a key component of living in tune with natural law,
Which is what Ayurveda is about,
Is about where you are in the world and honoring the local environment,
The local compatibility of your diet and nutrition.
So let me know where you are tuning in from in the world,
You can comment your city.
Also is this,
Are you new to Ayurveda,
Have you heard me speak before?
And this is not a cooking lesson,
You know,
A lot of Ayurveda,
It's funny because I write a lot about Ayurveda and people,
When I released some,
What was it,
A nutrition course on Ayurveda,
People were expecting recipes but I didn't give them recipes.
What I gave them were the principles of nutrition.
So when you understand the principles of nutrition and you understand the principles of food,
You implement those principles for your unique situation.
So it's not so much about understanding the foods and the recipes and all these,
It's more about utilizing principles of nutrition based in natural law to implement into your day-to-day life.
So what Ayurveda is,
And for those who have studied a little bit of Ayurveda,
You would come across virudhana or food combinations,
Incompatible food combinations,
Compatible food combinations.
It really means when you're dealing with different substances and different opposites,
How they combine together.
So that is what we're going to speak about today.
And it is a bit more of a refined aspect of Ayurveda nutrition.
So before we get into that,
I'm going to just give an overview of nutrition and also touch on things which are probably a priority to address when you are looking at nutrition.
First of all,
A quick summary of what is Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word.
Ayur means life.
Veda means knowledge.
Or also Veda means science.
So Ayurveda is the science of life.
What science?
Can you be more specific,
Dylan?
The science of life is the science in regards to the laws of nature.
So when we look at how nature operates,
And we look at the mechanisms of nature,
When we apply that to life,
Particularly human life or any creative life,
Any creature's life,
We can utilize that science of natural law to live life with maximum health and maximum freedom,
Abundance,
Pleasure and purpose.
Those are the aims of Ayurveda.
Essentially,
Ayurveda is living in tune with natural law,
Living in tune with the laws of nature,
And then you implement that into your life.
So the three pillars of Ayurveda,
And by the way,
Feel free to take notes.
Typically,
In my lectures,
People like to take lots of notes.
The three pillars of Ayurveda.
Does anyone know them?
Jot them down.
A clue is obviously one of them we're going to be speaking about.
So the three pillars of Ayurveda are in order of priority.
Number one,
Ahara,
Which is food.
Number two,
Nidra,
Which is sleep.
And number three,
The third pillar of Ayurveda is called Brahmacharya,
Which means creative,
Mastering creative energy or living in tune with the creative aspects of nature,
The creative operator.
So that includes daily routines,
Seasonal routines.
So the three pillars of Ayurveda,
Number one,
Food,
Number two,
Sleep,
And number three,
Creative regime,
Being creative and living in tune with nature cycles of daily routines,
Seasonal routine.
So the first pillar,
Food.
In summary,
And I spoke about this,
I believe it was last Insight Time Alive,
Which you can listen to on my free tracks,
And I spoke about how there's two options which happen from food.
Number one,
It turns to Rasa.
We call it Rasa,
Which is a thin fluid.
That thin fluid will give you energy and nourishment and feed your body,
Feed your tissues.
That is what we want.
That is what we want to maintain because as soon as we hit 30 years old,
We start to degenerate.
And especially when we hit around 60 years old or menopause,
We really start to degenerate rapidly.
And what happens is degeneration or catabolism is when the cells start to reduce,
The tissue starts to degenerate.
Bone density becomes lower,
Leading to osteopenia or osteoporosis.
It starts to shrivel up like a raisin.
The muscles start to shrivel up like a trophy.
The blood begins to be less abundant,
The lymph,
The plasma becomes to be less abundant.
The reproductive health,
Of course,
Is less energetic,
Which is leading to an overall lower immune system.
And in terms of neurological health,
The neurological aspect also dries up.
So this degeneration which is happening especially rapidly after menopause,
Especially for women who aren't having progesterone anymore,
So they're not getting that extra boost,
We need to stop that degeneration.
How?
We need to nourish our body.
We need to nourish each of our tissues,
Our lymph,
Blood,
Muscle,
Fat,
Bone marrow,
Bone,
Reproductive tissue.
It goes on.
We need to nourish those with the best way to nourish it.
The easiest way is something that we're doing every single day,
Which is eating.
So with the food we eat,
If we digest it well and it's good food,
Okay,
If we're eating good food and we're digesting well,
It will turn to a thin fluid and it will maintain those tissues because it will nourish those tissues and it will counteract the natural degenerative process which happens at these ages of life.
So today,
I'm going to share with you one way to absorb this thin nutrient fluid from food so that it can maintain our tissues for optimal health,
For maintaining and preventing degeneration which is ultimately going to provide longevity and healthy longevity.
When we think of living to 90 years old,
100 years old,
Which Ayurveda says is absolutely your birthright,
We can claim it.
We need to stop seeing these societies that are relying on doctors and hospitals for health.
We need to start taking control and saying,
Taking mastery of like,
Yes,
I have the capacity to live to 100 years old with absolute relevance,
Live to 100 years old in order to serve my society,
My family.
I want to be an asset to society at 100 years old.
I do not want to be a liability.
So Ayurveda talks specifically about this.
These days,
90-year-olds,
100-year-olds,
They're a liability.
They cost a lot of money.
They're in old age homes.
They can't think straight.
That is not associated with age according to Ayurveda.
That is a separate disease of degeneration and neurodegeneration,
Alzheimer's,
All those things.
Ayurveda says a 100-year-old person actually to 120 is the lifespan in this era which we call Kali Yuga,
In this time of life,
Ayurveda says lifespan is 120 and those 110-year-olds,
Those 108-year-olds should be a valuable asset to share their wisdom with society,
With the family and the broader state and country as well.
So I'm going to help you with that because I'm going to share with you how to get that thin fluid from food.
The second option,
By the way,
There's two options what happens with food.
One,
It turns that thin fluid which nourishes you,
Gives you energy.
And that word,
By the way,
In Sanskrit,
It's good to know the Sanskrit language because Sanskrit is the sound of nature.
So the sound of what is the form or phenomenon that we're trying to explain is in Sanskrit.
The sound of that thin fluid is rasa,
Rasa,
Rasa,
Nourishing thin fluid.
The second option is if it doesn't turn to rasa,
It turns to what's called amma.
How many people here have heard the word amma,
Who have just heard it?
It's quite a common name you'll come across in Ayurveda.
Amma is not a thin fluid,
It's a thick,
Sticky,
Congesting fluid which will congest the body and where it congests the body and for those who at my last talk,
I spoke about this,
It goes somewhere different.
It can manifest as mucus but it's not only mucus,
It's like mucus but it is an undigested material which lodges in different places of the body.
One,
Yes,
It can go in the sinus,
The throat,
The upper respiratory system but depending on that person is where the amma,
Where that thick,
Toxic fluid manifests.
It depends on the person.
It depends on your weak spot.
Where are your weak spots?
Some people,
Amma may manifest at the joints and cause rheumatoid arthritis because it gets stuck in the bend and can't move through.
Some people,
Amma will manifest at the upper respiratory system,
Cause hay fever,
Mucus.
Some people in the lungs.
There's so much space in the lungs,
It's such an easy place for the amma to lodge after the food has not digested properly.
So it will cause some breathing conditions,
Asthma,
Coughing.
So it can go in the blood,
Causing eczema,
Dermatitis,
Psoriasis.
It can go in the reproductive system,
Causing endometriosis.
It can go in various places,
Headaches.
Amma is the cause of all disease.
Eka sarva paroganam eka mandu analaha means there's one cause of all disease in Ayurveda and that is poor digestion because if you can't digest well,
You will get amma and that amma can cause all diseases.
It's not only related with digestion.
That amma lodges anywhere in the body,
Lymphedemia,
Lymphoma.
It goes on of how many diseases are the root is amma.
So today,
And I shared with you last time,
But today I'm going to go into quite a specific topic in Ayurveda.
How many people when they've heard or particularly people who've just touched on Ayurveda or anyone who's heard about Ayurveda or just learnt a little bit from reading,
Have come across these incompatible food combinations or these food combinations.
So that is such a fun thing to learn in Ayurveda,
So I decided to do this talk about it because a lot of people go,
Oh wow,
These food combinations which are so common in the West,
Ayurveda has really spoken about it thousands of years ago and have said this is going to be causing amma.
So I'm going to go through some of these food combinations,
But before I do,
I want to preface that these things which I'm about to share is a bit more refined.
When I say a bit more refined,
I mean it's not the most,
Some of them are and I'll go through them,
But it's not like the most important thing.
So if you're brand new to Ayurveda and you have a really diet that is not in tune with natural law,
Then there are many more important things you need to start doing before you start getting into these specific food combinations.
So for example,
You need to be eating fresh foods.
So I'll start with,
Before the food combinations,
I'll start with like the primary principles of nutrition.
The things which you should seriously consider in order to get rasa,
Which means in order to prevent disease and not only prevent disease,
I.
E.
Prevent amma,
But also to absorb the nourishing elixir of life which is rasa.
This is the fluid which gives us energy,
Vitality,
Immunity,
Reproductive capacity.
So how do we do that?
Simple principles,
Primary principles before food combinations are number one,
Eat with the sun.
Eat with the sun.
I'm not going to go into it a lot because we went into it in past lectures.
You can listen to it on my free tracks on Insight Timer,
But your digestive fire,
Which we call agni,
Is regulated by the sun.
When the sun is the strongest,
Digestion is the strongest.
Have your main meal at lunch,
Have your lightest meal at dinner.
Bedtime,
Sleep time is the main time your body recalibrates,
Regenerates,
Fixes all the issues that you need to do.
If you got any disease,
Any imbalance,
Anything in your health you want to address,
You have to get sleep right.
And sleep right isn't just falling asleep throughout the whole night,
Which by the way should be the case.
You should go to sleep within one to two minutes and you should not wake up once in the night,
Not even to urinate.
And when you wake up in the morning,
You should jump out of bed with enthusiasm.
That is the definition of proper sleep.
Some people even sleep throughout the whole night.
They just sleep like a log.
Still they may not be getting proper regeneration and healing of their imbalances or diseases.
So one aspect that can be preventing that recalibration during sleep time is if you had a heavy dinner.
If you had a heavy dinner,
Your biological attention,
Your blood circulation has to go to the gut.
It cannot attend to the other circumstances,
Whatever it is,
Hormones,
Liver,
Whatever needs to be repaired at night.
So I've done a whole course on Insight Timer on sleep where I give you 11 techniques,
One of them being light dinner of the importance and I go more into the science of having a light dinner.
And then the ideal is to fall asleep straight away,
Stay up throughout the night,
Not wake up once and wake up with enthusiasm.
So if that is not what you're achieving,
First of all,
Know that that is your birthright.
Even if you have not been sleeping for 20 years,
Well,
And you have quote-unquote insomnia for 20 years even,
You can achieve that.
That's your birthright.
You have the memory of health.
That's what Ayurveda is about.
It's not about,
Okay,
You have insomnia.
Let's put in this sleep chemical or let's block this serotonin or whatever.
It is more about let's remind the body of how to perform its functions.
Let's remind the mechanisms of how to operate.
That's what Ayurveda does.
It reminds the body of health rather than trying to target and remove disease,
Which it can target and remove disease.
But the primary importance is to optimize the remember,
The memory to enliven the memory of health.
So you can check out my Insight Timer course on sleep.
I highly recommend it.
There's so many things that you can help with that.
Second of all,
The thing is eat with the sun,
I just said,
And the second thing is eat cooked foods.
Have cooked foods over raw foods.
Why make your digestion do all the cooking?
Let the kitchen cook.
Don't put all the cooking strain on you.
People have a hard enough time digesting food.
Don't make your digestion system work more.
So get the kitchen to do the cooking.
Avoid raw foods.
I believe on Insight Timer,
I've got a whole free track called Raw Foods vs Cooked Foods.
I go through the science and I go through it all and we share both sides and then you can decide for yourself.
That's another principle.
And the other principle is eat everything fresh.
Everything fresh.
We want to have prana,
Which means life force in the food.
If you have leftovers,
If you have canned foods,
If you have frozen foods,
It's not going to be as much prana,
As much life force to give you energy.
Another principle is on that topic of fresh,
There was something that I was thinking about.
Anyone else want to drop down any strong principles that you feel are very better,
That is the nutrition.
Once again,
Ayurveda is on principles,
So it's not about you have to eat this diet,
You have to eat this vegetable.
That vegetable is bad,
That vegetable is good.
That grain is a superfood,
That grain is toxic.
No,
It's not like that.
If you can transcend those food fads and those food diets,
You will align with natural law.
That's what Ayurveda is about.
It's about living in tune with the season.
That's another thing.
Live in tune with season.
So eat seasonal local food.
That's another big one.
Another one is eat whole foods.
Avoid things in a package that has an ingredient that you don't understand or doesn't really sound like food.
These are the simple principles before we get into a more advanced kind of more refined level and more sophistication because if I am about to share with you virudhana,
Which is all the food combinations,
Particularly incompatible food combinations in Ayurveda.
The point is to be sophisticated.
If I'm going to tell you all these food combinations,
You're going to be like,
Oh my God,
This sounds too complex.
Then you need to not try to do everything tonight for dinner or tomorrow.
You want to take it bit by bit and you want to increase your sophistication and your capacity and capability,
Your richness of life.
It's like some people,
They hear about the Ayurvedic daily routine and all these practices and health practices.
You should not be getting overwhelmed.
If you're getting overwhelmed,
You're not implementing these practices in tune with the natural law,
In tune with the Veda.
You should be implementing them one by one and once you really,
Okay,
Yeah,
Obviously I eat the sun.
I'm now in tune with it.
My digestion suits it.
It's aligned.
It's like dinner,
Lunch is the main meal.
Of course,
I feel it in my gut and I honor it.
So that's easy.
Okay,
Next thing.
Okay,
I'm going to really stop having the organic gluten-free crackers,
Which by the way have rancid seed oils in them.
I'm going to stop having the organic superfood protein bar,
Which has lasted in a packet for two years because of the rancid oils.
So again,
That change I'm referring to is whole foods,
Okay?
So okay,
Great.
I've got whole foods.
Obviously,
I'm not going to eat food which has acid regulator or something which doesn't sound like food or color 4,
5,
6.
So just bit by bit,
You increase your sophistication with all these health practices.
How long it took me to get blue light blocking glasses which protect your hormones?
How long did it take me to stop using Wi-Fi and plug in my computer through the Ethernet to avoid the non-native electromagnetic fields?
So how long did it take me to get a wide keyboard so I don't have to put my wrist on my pulse on the laptop when I type and receive the EMF straight into my pulse?
So these things don't happen tomorrow when you learn all the knowledge,
Right?
You want to gradually implement it and in a way that suits you.
So with that being said,
Again,
I'm saying that because we're going to be speaking about virutana,
Which is the Sanskrit name for opposite or incompatible food combinations.
And the reason I'm prefacing with this is because I'm about to show you these food combinations which is a more refined,
It's a more thing and definitely you can implement it.
So I'm going to go to questions at the end and some people are saying that,
Yes,
They've heard about incompatible food combinations because it is a common thing and I've read of someone's talking about dairy and fruit together.
Yes,
We're going to speak about that.
Talking about fruit,
Yes,
Especially we're going to speak about combining fruit,
Yes.
So what about fresh juices as juices do the work?
So this is the thing,
You know,
Like with juicing,
You're not chewing the food.
You need to chew food to send the brain chemical,
The signal for your brain to send to secrete digestive enzymes.
When you chew the food,
Your brain will say,
Okay,
Secrete hydrochloric acid,
Secrete digestive enzymes that will help.
So chewing is important.
Juices can be had.
Juices are never considered one of the heavier forms to digest.
You may think,
Oh,
It's liquid.
It shouldn't be light.
Actually,
Juice is heavier for many reasons.
It's more concentrated.
And with juices,
Of course,
Check blood sugar is important.
But having the whole food is important,
The whole chewing,
The fiber.
And if you have high blood sugar,
You want to definitely consider probably not having fruit juices.
If you're having the whole fiber,
It is better.
So that's pre-diabetes,
Diabetes,
Which by the way,
85% of US are pre-diabetic and something like 85% of them don't even know they are pre-diabetic.
So fresh juices,
Okay,
But again,
Not vegetable juices.
Vegetables should be cooked.
Fruit is cooked by nature when it's ripened by the sun.
So the fruit you can have ripe.
It's cooked.
It's not raw.
It would be raw if it was not ripe.
The vegetables you don't want to have raw,
Except for some vegetables you can.
Once again,
That's all in the Insight Timer track,
Free track on raw foods versus cooked foods.
That's like 45-minute talk on that topic.
So all right,
So meat as well,
A question on meat.
Meat in Ayurveda is considered medicine,
So it's more about how you eat the meat.
It's not just about this food,
That food.
It's about how,
What season,
What are you combining meat with.
That's also will come in the food combinations,
But it's about how you eat meat.
So I've done Vital Veda podcast episode on meat and how to best consume it and how to protect from the overwhelming amount of poor quality meat that's on the market.
So,
And just last question for now,
If we make a whole pot of Khichri,
Which is the essential Ayurvedic dish,
A wonderful healing dish,
Do we throw away the leftovers?
I don't recommend you throw it away.
I recommend you give it to a neighbor.
Give it to a friend.
Find an elderly.
Find a pregnant woman.
Find a postpartum woman.
Just give the food to other people.
So,
All right,
Virudhana,
I'll get into questions later.
Virudhana means opposites,
So food combinations.
These are not only food when they're combined together,
It can also be stuff that is incompatible in time.
So having things in the wrong times,
Having food that's incompatible to your digestive Agni,
To your digestive capacity,
Having food which is incompatible in the way it's cooked.
Like,
For example,
Yogurt should not be cooked,
It becomes bad,
Should not be heated strong.
So different ways of food becoming incompatible.
So,
Let's speak about the most toxic incompatible food combination.
The most prevalent toxic poison,
Ayurveda does not use the word poison.
It means,
The Sanskrit word for poison is visha,
And it does not use that word lightly.
But there's one food combination which everyone probably,
Everyone on this call has had,
Including myself,
A lot in their life,
Including probably at least half the people on this call are still eating this poison,
Consuming it.
And that poison,
Does anyone want to guess,
Does anyone want to have a go on the chat of what the most incompatible food combination is that majority of people have it?
I used to mention in every single lecture that I would lecture at because I just wanted to spread this word more and prevent this poison from going.
So milk and chocolate is not poisonous,
Sugar is not poisonous,
Deep fried is probably the most poison so far out of all these things.
Dairy and meat,
Again,
Not poison like these things.
This is the thing,
Yes,
Dairy and meat is incompatible,
Fruit and yogurt are incompatible.
Milk and chocolate can be incompatible,
Not necessarily,
But it's,
Again,
This is a refined thing guys,
Like all the stuff that I said before is more important than eating fruit and yogurt together.
The most incompatible food combination is honey and heat.
When you heat honey,
Above body temperature,
37 degrees Celsius,
Sorry,
I don't know,
Whatever body temperature is in Fahrenheit,
That honey becomes poison.
That honey,
There's a toxin in the honey and only recently has modern science began to study it more,
But everybody has said this for thousands of years,
There's a toxin stored in the wax globule of the honey and the modern science,
And I'm going to attempt to pronounce it,
Hydromethylfulfrate is the toxin,
Abbreviated as HMF,
It's a carcinogen.
So when you heat honey above body temperature,
That toxin will come out of the wax globule and it will go into the body.
If you don't heat honey,
It will stay in the wax globule and eliminate through the waste products of sweat,
Urine,
Faeces.
So that means no honey in tea,
Including your ginger lemon tea,
Honey,
Ginger lemon tea,
No honey on,
Not even on porridge,
Not even on toast,
Definitely no baking with honey,
No honey soy chicken.
So do not heat honey,
However you think.
No honey in your extra organic chai,
Health food chai.
So this is another thing which you need to consider,
Like when I occasionally,
Unfortunately have to get,
You know,
Not unfortunately,
But when I haven't had my beautiful homemade chai,
I have to go to a cafe and get a chai when I'm traveling,
The first thing I ask is,
Is there honey in your chai mix,
Because a lot of people are adding honey in their chai mix.
Luckily,
These days,
Vegan is becoming more popular,
So then they're not adding the honey,
They're adding a different sweetener instead.
So you can add honey to cool tea,
You can add honey to a drink,
It's medicinal,
But it should not be above 37 degrees temperature.
Now you think,
Come on,
Dylan,
I've been eating this so much in my life,
I don't feel toxic.
Well,
It's an acuum,
It's a slow death in Ayurveda.
Honey causes death,
Heated honey causes death in Ayurveda.
Well,
We're all dying,
We're all on the way to dying.
So it's how much does this contribute,
You know,
I would love to see studies correlating those who have received colon cancer with how much heated honey they had in their life.
So there's a lot of things,
It becomes like a sticky,
Homogenous glue that is in the gut and in the body,
And it's very hard to take it out of the body.
It takes a lot of Panchakamas,
Which is a long detox and rejuvenation process.
So avoid heated honey,
And that includes,
In Ayurveda,
It's said to not eat or consume honey when you have a fever,
Because that is how sensitive it is to hot.
Now,
A lot of you are asking,
Okay,
Well,
How do we have honey?
In Ayurveda,
The ideal way is having honey as medicine.
So we mix honey with certain foods and we take it that way.
Also,
If you don't have those medicines,
You can just take honey once a day,
One teaspoon by itself.
Now,
Honey is so sensitive to heat that when you take honey,
Like through,
Say,
For example,
Eating a teaspoon,
Another good way to have honey is on fruit,
Another good way to have honey is on yogurt,
If you eat yogurt,
But yogurt,
Again,
Is a whole other topic.
It very easily causes Ama.
So if you,
Say,
Have your honey on fruit or your honey herb,
You have to wait at least 10 minutes before drinking tea.
That is how sensitive honey is to heat.
So yes,
We're just saying how there's so many places who have bread and cookies baked in honey in the US.
You definitely need to check ingredients.
So agave nectar is okay.
Any sweetener,
Raw sugar,
Jaggery,
Have other sweeteners instead.
So that is the number one food combination,
Incompatible food combination.
Another one,
Which someone mentioned so we can talk about,
Is the fruit,
Fruit,
So fruit and dairy particularly,
Right?
So fruit and dairy mixed together,
Unless it is a very sweet fruit,
Only the sweet taste,
Such as dried dates,
Dried raisins,
Dried figs,
And mangoes.
Those are the only fruits you can have with dairy,
With milk rather,
But the rest you should not because the rest of the foods,
Even apple,
You know,
Think about apple in your muesli,
Apple in your porridge,
Think about blueberries in your porridge,
Blueberries with your yogurt.
These have some sour taste to it.
What happens when you mix sour with dairy?
What happens when you mix sour with milk?
It curdles.
It turns to a curdling action before it ferments to cheese or yogurt.
So this is what will happen in the gut,
It will curdle and you will get an incompatible food combination,
An incompatible structure,
Which is going to cause ama.
So all back to that ama.
Not stewed fruit with yogurt.
Not even that.
Yes,
Strewed fruit can be made sweeter,
But still.
You can use,
If you're someone who really can't adapt and can't get creative with other recipes or breakfasts,
You can have coconut yogurt with your fruit because coconut and fruit is fine together.
Mango lassi.
I know how lucky we were,
We got like the best fruit of them all was allowed to have with dairy and that's mango.
So you can have mango milkshakes.
And I want to add to that,
Let's talk about banana specifically.
Banana is,
We call it already,
The only fruit with rules.
It is a highly individual,
Stubborn fruit,
Which doesn't like to be mixed with many other fruits.
Banana,
These are the rules of banana,
You can all write down.
Number one,
It should be had,
It should not be had on empty stomach.
So say goodbye to the first thing in the morning,
Banana.
It should not be had on full stomach.
It should be had as a snack.
And it should not even be had with other fruits.
Banana is one of the heavy fruits.
On full stomach,
It will cause this vata,
This gas,
This heavy air in the stomach,
This distention,
This heavy feeling of air.
It's like air is light,
But when it's full of pressure,
It creates a heavy pressure.
And you can feel this from banana on empty stomach.
And it will disrupt the digestion.
And then the rest of the day,
That air will be too much,
The distention will be too much.
So like that,
It will create some ama whenever you eat next.
So banana should not even be mixed with other fruits.
Now,
Banana can be mixed with honey and even some special dishes with nuts and things,
But that's about it.
We just want to have banana alone.
And like Kay is saying,
Melon is a similar thing.
Melon should be had alone,
But not as strict with banana,
As banana.
Fruit salads,
Also,
The ideal is not to mix fruits.
And I believe on Insight Time,
I'm not sure,
I have a track on why fruit should be eaten alone and more about fruit and how to actually eat fruit.
Yeah,
The track is something along the lines of how to eat fruit,
But I'll touch on it now and that is,
Ayurveda is about six tastes.
There are six tastes,
Sweet,
Sour,
Salty,
Pungent,
Bitter,
Astringent.
So six tastes in Ayurveda.
They all have different therapeutic effects and different impacts on health.
So we need to learn how to make them in harmony.
Ayurveda doesn't count calories,
Macronutrients,
Micronutrients,
Protein,
Carbs,
Fat.
It doesn't like,
Okay,
I'm going to have 330 grams of protein and I'm going to have 128 grams.
No,
It doesn't do that.
It just wants to have a balance of the six tastes.
And this is related with the incompatible food combinations,
The tastes.
So with fruit,
We want to ideally have one fruit at a time.
When we were hunter-gatherers,
We'd find a bush of berries and we'd go crazy and give me all the mulberries.
I'll have like a bowl of mulberries,
Just mulberries only.
Wouldn't really get like mulberries and this and mango and banana all in one.
So fruit salad is quite an incompatible food combination.
It will highly likely turn to amar and gas.
It doesn't digest well.
It doesn't make you feel light and energetic after.
And especially if you're going to add,
And now we're going to get into another topic of fruit,
Of adding muesli and some nuts and some protein powder and some yogurt and some pea powder,
Some protein pea powder,
And maybe some green powder of dried,
Chlorophyll-rich green vegetables in powder form.
So one thing you can take home is to simplify.
So this is the problem with the super bowls or the protein bowls or the protein shakes or my morning smoothie is that people are adding a vegetable like kale or spinach or a green powder plus some fruits like banana,
Which just really doesn't like to be mixed with anything,
Plus some nuts,
Plus some maybe oats.
So these are all different food groups.
We have fruit,
We have vegetable,
Nut,
Grain.
So all these are incompatible because they all digest at different times.
It's confusing the body,
Especially fruit.
Fruit is fructose.
Mostly all the other food groups are glucose.
So when we digest the fruit,
It digests much quicker and it digests at a different time.
So if we have fruit with porridge or we have fruit with muesli,
Any of these grains,
It's going to create incompatibility because the fruit is like on its own level.
It's ripened by the sun,
The other food groups need to be cooked by fire well.
So it's a whole different ballgame.
So this is going to be one thing with the fruit.
So overall,
Action steps,
Because when we get into the virudhana,
A lot of it can be like,
No,
No,
No,
We need to have solutions.
The best fruit is wonderful.
The best way to have fruit is in the afternoon as a snack and have one fruit at a time.
So I like to have like half a watermelon or quarter of a watermelon in the afternoon or have two mangoes or have three apples.
So that is a great way to eat fruit.
In the summer,
And US people,
I know there's a lot of US on this call,
When you're going into the summer or Australia where we are now,
When it's a late sunset,
Have fruit for dinner.
Make that your dinner.
Have three oranges for dinner,
Quarter of a watermelon for dinner.
Fruit should be also had before sunset.
So these are some,
This is why I said to have it at lunch.
So this is some of the food combinations.
Another big one that is prevalent is milk and salt.
So people like,
Well,
In Britain,
Apparently,
They add salt to porridge.
But this includes having,
In India,
For example,
People will have a salty meal followed by a chai.
Or in the West,
It's your avocado on toast with your morning coffee with milk,
And that's cow's milk.
So when you mix milk and salt together,
It creates a really good breeding ground for parasites.
And when I was in India,
I was working as a physician at a retreat with about a hundred people for two years in a row,
And we were staying in the best hotel in Rishikesh in North India,
Five-star.
But still,
Even though that hotel was the people cooking,
So many people got sick.
Because that's what I do.
I mean,
In India,
I'm dealing with all the parasites that all the Westerners get because their gut is so foreign to the microbiome of India.
Even as much as they think they're strong and as much as they have good digestion as much and many times that they've been to India,
Still,
Parasites will go for the Westerner in India because it's just too foreign,
The microbiome.
So I was there acting as a physician to deal with all their diarrhea and stuff.
And the big cause of this was because they were having chai,
The trend of chai with their salty doses or whatever it was.
So similarly,
Avoid milk and salt,
And you got to wait till it digests.
Like it doesn't mean,
Okay,
I'm going to have fruit,
And then I'm going to have my porridge after my fruit.
No,
It takes time to digest.
So fruit takes quicker to digest.
Fruit can take 45 minutes and milk can take 45 minutes.
So if you have your coffee,
You have your chai,
You have your fruit,
45 minutes,
Then wait and then have your salty dish or whatever other dish you want to have to keep it separate.
But if you have a big lunch,
Even one hour after having a coffee or a chai,
It's not good because you need to wait till that lunch digest or having the fruit after you need to wait a few hours,
A couple hours,
Two,
Three hours at least.
So yes,
That is the aspect of milk and salt.
That's another incompatible food combination.
Another one is having,
Someone mentioned it,
Is fish and dairy,
Okay.
I don't think many people have that.
You know,
Fish milkshake is a term that it's not good,
But yes,
That is something which should not be had.
And another incompatible food combination,
And by the way,
I want to especially mention dairy and banana.
Like that is really,
Really incompatible and that is particularly said in everybody to cause skin diseases,
Eczema,
Psoriasis,
Dermatitis,
And eye issues.
So you know,
You guys here on this call,
You're joining from inside timer,
You have some familiarity with conscious practices.
Hopefully,
You're not drinking banana milkshakes,
But you guys know how common banana milkshakes are around the world and recipe for kids developing eczema and psoriasis.
Another thing is just dairy and sour in general.
So if you're going to be having dairy,
You know,
Yes,
You can have dairy with or your milk with dates or sultanas and raisins,
Which is sweet dried fruit,
But you don't want to be having like cranberries or Davis and plum dried fruits or anything like that.
So these are some of the things,
Guys,
There's not so many.
It's more about the principles and learning these tastes.
I don't recommend a book,
But there's a wonderful course online called the Essence of Ayurvedic Nutrition.
The point of that course that I created is the fact that it's about the principles.
So when you understand these principles,
You don't have to remember,
Okay,
I kind of that kind of this kind of this is good for and the point is to learn the five elements,
The three doshas.
Okay,
The five elements in Ayurveda,
Space,
Air,
Fire,
Water,
Earth,
And three doshas vada,
Pita,
Kapha,
Just a summary of those five elements.
And when you can see the five elements,
The doshas in every food,
In every person,
In every disease,
In every activity that you do,
Like now on Insight Timer,
The certain doshas and elements,
The way I'm speaking is certain doshas and elements.
So how can you recognize that in any imbalance and then implement that?
You come across any food,
Even a food or a substance that's not mentioned in Ayurveda because it wasn't in India or Asia.
Come across any substance and say,
Okay,
I recognize these elements.
I recognize these qualities.
Is it heavy?
Is it light?
Is it hot?
Is it unctuous?
Is it dry?
Understanding to investigate a substance and see that substance and know what therapeutic effect it will create and know what health impact it will create,
What imbalance it can create.
And that's just by touching,
Smelling,
Tasting,
Looking at the substance,
That substance can be a food or a herb.
If someone's asking about cacao butter,
So all you have to do is,
Okay,
Cacao,
It's unctuous,
Which means like a type of oily,
Lubricating quality,
It is heating,
It is stimulating,
It causes a lot of movement of the mind,
Of the heart,
Circulation.
So seeing,
Okay,
What's that going to create on the body?
That's going to increase anxiety,
It's going to increase circulation for those who need more enhanced circulation,
It's going to irritate skin disorders because it's heating.
So this is like the science of the principles of Ayurveda,
And this is what I did in this course,
Essence of Ayurvedic Nutrition,
Which you can attend on VataVeda,
And that's the point of it.
So,
And again,
Like,
For example,
Cacao,
Nuts,
Okay,
They're both sweet,
Okay,
Cacao's bitter,
But the butter is having a sweet with it.
And you have the nuts,
Okay,
It's sweet,
Dried cranberries,
Sour,
Okay,
Nothing too incompatible there.
But again,
How do you prepare nuts?
Nuts are heavy,
Nuts need to be purified,
There's certain ways to change the food.
So this is a summary,
Again,
Just to summarize the food combinations that I mentioned.
It's fruit with other foods,
It's dairy and sour,
Dairy and banana,
Dairy and fruit,
Fish and milk,
Honey and heat,
Milk and salt,
Seafood and milk.
So,
And it can even,
You can even get to,
Like,
Substances which have too much of each other's qualities.
For example,
If I fried in sesame oil chilies with mustard seeds and mustard leaves and beef,
These are all very heating foods,
Very heating foods.
So that dish,
Because it's chilies,
Sesame is a very heating food,
Mustard is a very heating food,
And beef can be very heating,
All that together,
It's like,
That is gonna inflame the body if there's any rosacea or skin issue or any heat in the body,
IBS,
Inflammatory bowel disease.
So these things can be really irritated by that.
So yes,
So Essence of Ayurvedic Nutrition is on the website VitalVeda.
So I hope you guys enjoyed.
Any other questions,
Let me know.
I'm gonna stick around maybe for a bit longer as long as there's questions for,
I can go a bit,
Five minutes or so after.
If I missed your question,
I'm sorry if you could ask it again.
And someone said,
Any dietary suggestions for women past menopause?
When you start going past menopause,
So first of all,
Let's just talk about the celiac and the malabsorption.
I say that no one is allergic or intolerant to anything,
It is just poor digestion.
I've worked with celiacs to eat meat,
Sorry,
To eat wheat.
I have worked with celiac,
My celiac patients eat wheat,
Not often,
Maybe once a fortnight or once a week when they wanna enjoy that really good fresh bread from the bakery,
Just one slice only.
And they've significantly reduced their symptoms and potentially completely reduced them.
So the way to do that is enhance your metabolism,
Enhance your digestion.
So yes,
And for menopause,
We need to look at the qualities.
So this is where the Essence of Ayurvedic Nutrition comes in because we talk about doshas,
You really learn doshas then,
I don't usually teach doshas in introductory lectures because you got to really understand it.
But with menopause,
You start getting a lot of dryness,
Which is vata.
So it's really important for them to be well lubricated,
Not only from the diet,
But also from external practices like self-oil massage.
Self-oil massage is one of the most powerful things for menopause,
One of the most powerful things for past that age and for all genders.
And on Insight Timer,
I have a whole premium track on guiding you on self-oil massage,
The best way to pacify vata,
The best way to lubricate and significant effects on the nervous system,
On the hormones,
So many things.
By the way,
The next live coming up,
You can all diarize it.
It's on May 27th,
I believe,
May 27th,
Same time,
This time,
Might be one hour difference with the daylight savings,
But it's on hormones.
It's called hormonal homeostasis and it recognizes that all the hormones are connected like a web.
Reproductive hormones,
Sexual hormones,
Adrenal hormones,
Stress hormones,
Thyroid hormones,
Like melatonin,
Sleep,
They're all connected like a web and it's about understanding the dance and the harmony between the hormones for homeostasis.
We have healthy,
Balanced hormones,
You have radiant moods,
You have radiant energy levels and of course,
You have radiant love relationships and it goes on.
Hormones are so key.
So please sign up for that live.
Sign up so you don't forget and send your calendar on the page.
If you want to leave a donation,
Guys,
Please do,
I really appreciate it.
This Insight Timer,
I've been putting extra intention to devoting my time and my content creation and my lectures to Insight Timer because I see it like a filtered social media place where it's filtered from all the crap that social media gives.
So I am going to maintain my energy but I really appreciate the donations.
This is what makes me come back for lives,
For more Insight Timer lives which we do regularly,
Usually every month but the next one is in two months because I'm traveling.
So yes,
If you'd like to leave a donation and reciprocate the energy of enlivening health because dhanya is the word for donation and it's what the heart does,
It gives and receives.
It gives the lymph,
It takes the blood,
It gives the blood,
It takes the lymph,
Back and forth.
So when you give in the Vedas,
It's a way to enliven the reciprocal circular flow of energy.
Lakshmi is abundance and for abundance you need flow,
You should not be stagnant.
So is ghee dairy?
It is dairy but lactose intolerant people can eat ghee because the lactose and milk solids have been completely removed especially for good quality ghee,
Homemade ghee.
I've got an article on vital Veda on ghee and how to make ghee.
Can we have amla,
Let's say bliss with milk?
So the vendor is asking a question,
Can we have a herbal formula with a sour ingredient with milk?
If that herbal formula is not dominating the sour taste like the wonderful Ayurvedic herbal formula for the nervous system and for stress that you mentioned called bliss,
Fantastic formula,
Bliss original especially,
Very good for the nervous system and for sleep and anxiety etc.
Bliss has a little bit of amla which is a fruit which is a very,
Very,
Very,
Very sour fruit but it is so little in the formula that the formula and result of the formula is sweet.
So yes,
You can have it with milk.
Simple green smoothie in the morning,
Okay.
No I do not advise green smoothies for the reasons I mentioned especially spinach,
Silver beet should not be had raw.
It has oxalates,
You need to blanch those and remove the water and then use that spinach or silver beet that has been blanched.
Could you please speak to why undercooked onions cause terrible stuffy nose and sinus blockage?
I don't think that undercooked onions cause terrible stuffy nose or sinus blockage.
I think that it can clear sinuses because of how pungent it is.
So what can happen when you eat something like that is it brings the mucus out that has been deeper in your upper respiratory tract or your throat and that's coming out from eating the raw onion and then when you blow or you do some certain steam inhalation to get it fully out,
It will get it fully out but it doesn't cause it unless you have a certain issue with your acne digestion to that because some people can't eat onion and garlic,
Another intolerance but it's rooted in some metabolic issue not in the actual food causing that.
So any food suggestions to help pass menopause?
If you're transitioning through menopause,
That's really important to do it during the transition while undergoing those hormonal transformations.
In Ayurveda,
Menopause should be just like that,
Like you just stop your period.
All these hot flushes and things are separate,
Imbalanced thing.
So for that,
You need to book a consultation or wait for next lecture on hormones but yes,
It's not.
Patients with celiac avoid villi damage.
You improve the intestinal villi,
The tone of the villi.
You have certain herbs regularly which are strengthening the gut.
There are so many ways to improve the digestion and heal the digestion and stop that imbalance.
Where do you get bliss?
Bliss is from the Ayurvedic formula company called One Eleven Health.
Parsley,
Green smoothie,
Okay.
Lastly,
You can have raw just like you can have cilantro raw,
Just like you can have cucumber raw,
Just like you can have lettuce raw but smoothie,
Okay,
I wouldn't recommend it.
At least have some ginger with it to help digestion.
Can you have fruit with oat milk?
Ideally not,
Ideally not.
You could have some really sweet fruits because oat milk and oats are sweet.
You could have things like dates and sultanas or raisins and have that beautiful way.
And of course,
Oat milk,
You need to check it doesn't have any vegetable oils.
Again,
That principle of looking at the ingredients,
If anything doesn't look like food,
Don't have it.
Wonderful teaching.
Thank you.
All new to me.
I would like to take a class on essence and self-oil massage.
Self-oil massage class is on Insight Timer.
Essence of Ayurvedic nutrition is on Vital Veda.
So yes,
That is all.
Thank you so much for joining.
Again,
If you want to leave a donation on the page,
That would be appreciated.
Another way which I appreciate so much is for you to leave reviews on this page.
If you do the self-oil massage audio instructions,
You do the sleep course,
You do any of the raw food lecture,
The free lecture,
Any of these things,
You can please leave a review or leave a question.
I would love to answer your questions.
Just leave them on Insight Timer and I will reply then.
Join me,
Follow me on Insight Timer for the updates of the lives.
I'm trying to do these lives regularly.
Next one will be the end of May on hormones.
