Relax and find a comfortable position. Feel the support of the earth beneath you. Notice the natural rhythm of your breath as you imagine a lush, green meadow with colorful flowers, bees buzzing, and birds singing. Engage your senses to calm your mind and soothe your nervous system. Allow this deep relaxation to nurture your intentions, letting them blossom naturally. This practice is dedicated to my professor and mentor at UCSC, Frank Andrews, who passed away in February 2024. The reference to bird language is inspired by his teaching that humans, like birds, communicate with a call and response of "I'm here, are you there?" His book The Art and Practice of Loving and Choosing Your Way Through Life are invaluable tools that carry on his wisdom, grace, and heartfelt yes to living a purposeful life.

Welcome.

This is a meditation for spring renewal that will allow our body,

Our mind,

Our heart to find deep rest and renewal with some guided relaxation and guided imagery.

Let's begin by finding a comfy position on our backs,

Placing whatever support underneath your head and knees to support the curves of your spine.

Take a few deep,

Cleansing breaths in through your nose,

Out through your mouth.

Release any tension with each breath out into the earth.

And begin to sense every part of the back body that's in contact with support.

Scan from the back of your heels,

The back of your calves and knees,

Your thighs,

Low back,

Middle back and upper back,

Softening into the warm embrace of the earth,

The back of your head cradled by the ground.

Cradled by the ground.

In this moment,

There is nothing you have to do,

Nothing you have to achieve except to rest and allow yourself to be renewed,

Restored with the gentle help of guided imagery of spring.

As you continue relaxing into the floor,

Notice your breath rising and falling effortlessly in your belly.

Let your breath breathe you effortlessly in and out.

And soften areas of habitual tension,

Softening around the corners of the eyes,

Your cheekbones and jaw,

The sides of your neck,

Your shoulders dripping down away from your ears with the eyes gently turning inwards.

Now,

Begin to imagine yourself in a lush green meadow on a warm spring day.

Nurturing day.

We're going to engage as many of our senses to activate our relaxation response.

Begin to notice in this meadow,

The green long grass touching your heels,

Your feet,

Your ankles,

Your feet resting in the earth planted firmly.

Notice what else you see.

Vibrant colors of wildflowers,

Pinks and purples,

Oranges,

Yellows,

Light blues,

Fragrant,

Vibrant colors of wildflowers blooming.

Perhaps you notice there are bees and you can hear the buzz of the bees enjoying the flowers.

What else do you hear?

Listen.

Can you hear the wind blowing in the leaves?

The songs of birds chirping,

A cheerful melodious song back and forth saying,

Back and forth saying to each other,

I'm here.

Are you there?

I'm here.

Are you there?

The birds communicating in their language,

Softening your mind.

Begin to notice now what you feel as you're standing in this meadow,

Surrounded by the grass,

The flowers,

The bees,

The birds.

Maybe you can feel the warmth of the sun shining down on your face.

Feeling the radiance of the warmth,

The brilliance of the sunshine radiating down on you,

Your face glistening in the sun,

Your whole body being warmed,

Every cell renewed.

Your whole body being warmed,

Every cell renewed by the light of the sun.

You stand here basking in the sunlight,

Taking it all in.

As you connect more deeply with the nature,

You take your hand and you place it.

Something in your environment,

Perhaps a nearby tree,

You feel the bark.

As you take a few deep breaths,

Feeling the coolness of the bark,

The dampness of the grass beneath your feet.

Take a minute to notice what else you might hear,

See,

Feel,

Even taste here.

As I fade out my voice,

Dropping in to a deeper state of relaxation,

As your guided imagery helps to soothe and calm your nervous system.

And I'll bring you out when it's time.

What does it feel like to be you when you're in this place?

In this place,

When you're taking in all of your senses in a place where you can find nourishment,

Replenishment,

Warmth,

Support of nature.

What does it feel like to be you when you feel relaxed and at ease?

At peace and perhaps even content or joyful.

What does it feel like to be you?

Deeply nourished.

We too can find renewal with the season of spring as new life begins to grow.

We can renew ourselves by taking time to rest.

Remembering our intention for self-care allows whatever seeds or intentions to blossom in their own time.

I invite you to rest in this healing,

Nurturing space of renewal as long as you'd like.

And when you're ready,

You can begin to deepen your breath.

Wiggling toes and fingers,

Returning to your day,

Renewed in body,

Mind,

And heart.

Renewed in body,

Mind,

And heart.

Coming back to your rest practice as often as you need.

With great love and care,

Namaste.
