As soon as you get up in the morning, even after a very restful sleep, the mind returns with all of its concerns. While in deep sleep you were completely at ease and peaceful. So what happens when you wake up? You once again become a human being that will enjoy sometimes and suffer other times. You become a mind and body only and not free from your thinking like you were all night in deep sleep. To realize your true Self and be free even while awake, meditation on your true Self is essential.

The title of this podcast gives you the entire knowledge,

The entire practice of Self-Realization,

Because in every moment you can close your eyes.

By closing your eyes,

You've shut off your senses,

So you're no longer seeing everything that's in front of you with your physical eyes.

All that energy that moves through your eyes is now contained.

Rather than listening to all the external sounds,

Your attention goes inward.

Rather than touching and feeling and smelling those forms and phenomena outside of yourself,

You're directing your attention to the space that's there at the back of all the senses.

And in effect,

All the senses are becoming absorbed in that space.

I know ever since I was a small child,

And you might have had a similar experience,

There were moments when there was no particular thought in my mind,

There was nothing particularly that I was feeling,

And I was just space.

Now the teachers would say that you're daydreaming,

You're not listening,

Your parents might say the same thing.

However,

Now as meditators,

We're coming to see that that space that we have known throughout our whole life is the space of purity,

Of freedom,

Of immortality,

The ever-present reality that we all are.

But because that space wasn't given its correct information that that is the reality,

That is who we are.

And instead,

We were taught,

You are a boy,

You are a girl,

You are in this family,

You are in that family,

This is your house,

These are your eyes,

These are your ears.

And we were made into a body with mind and thoughts.

So the body and the thoughts became who we are.

And that space that everyone experiences for maybe brief moments throughout the day was ignored or discounted.

And the waking state was made into the most important state that one experienced and called,

That's who you are and this is your life.

Even what everyone experiences every night in deep sleep was discounted.

That was sleep,

That was dream,

That was the unreality.

And the waking state was called,

Or is called by most people,

The reality of who you are and what you have to do and what you have to achieve and how you have to live.

It was all based on the waking state,

The mental perception,

The minds,

Ideas,

Beliefs,

Interests,

Moral fibers,

Right and wrong,

Good and bad.

This was all imprinted now in your mind.

But every night when you go to sleep and the mind is not there,

Everything is still working perfectly.

Your blood is flowing,

Your heart is pumping,

Your digestion is happening.

Now who is doing all that?

It's not you,

The mind that's doing that.

It's all happening from that pure being,

That true self that you've always been and you still are.

And in the dream,

Who's creating all those images?

It's not your waking state mind that's creating all these weird,

Sometimes strange,

Sometimes upsetting images that you have when you dream.

They're just happening without your control.

So why is it then that when you wake up in the morning,

The idea is that you are in control?

Your mind is the one who's guiding you.

The waking state is who you are.

And you cancel that in deep sleep you were perfectly fine for six,

Eight hours.

There were no problems,

No worries,

No concerns,

No agitation.

What was that state?

Who was that that was in deep sleep?

And who was that that was dreaming?

And all these sometimes familiar,

Sometimes unfamiliar situations,

Images came to you.

Who was doing that?

So that same being that allowed you to sleep all night and have all your bodily functions working perfectly,

That allowed you to dream and have all these movies going on in your head of illusory situations,

That same being is there in the waking state.

So that being or knower is there throughout all the three states of consciousness.

Now we've come to know through listening and studying that there exists a state of consciousness.

We can call it the fourth state or higher consciousness,

Self-realized state that has always been,

That you are,

That I am,

That all this is.

And is that pure,

Free,

Forever being.

The covering,

The preventing power happens in the waking state,

Which is only a partial time period in your day.

It's not even your whole 24 hours,

Because some of that you're asleep and the being is working perfectly and you're fine.

Some of it you're dreaming and having completely different images of who you are and what your life is.

Sometimes very strange,

Sometimes very poignant,

Sometimes applicable to your life,

Sometimes not.

And then in the waking state you say,

That is me.

But that same me was there in deep sleep,

That same me was there in dream,

And now that same me is there in waking state.

So now through meditation you come to know,

We come to know,

This fourth state of consciousness where that same me is there and you're not the waking state limitation of your mind and body and senses.

So by closing your eyes,

Closing off the senses,

Turning them inward,

Allowing them to dissolve in you,

The knower,

Which is pure,

Free,

Forever,

Now the practice is to spend time in that awareness,

In that fourth state of consciousness,

Rather than limiting yourself with the waking state of consciousness.

So you're still awake,

You're not sleeping like you were in deep sleep or in dream.

You're awake,

You're alert,

You're attentive,

But you are not identified or mixed with your body and your mind.

So whatever the mind is thinking,

It's similar to as if someone else is thinking it,

Because your body and mind now become your tool,

Your instrument that you,

The self,

Can operate and use to experience all the joy of living,

Which is why we're alive as a body,

As a mind,

As an individual.

But there's no separation now,

There's no duality,

Because you,

That pure being,

Is the source of it all.

It's like the blank canvas and all the paint is painted on the canvas.

Without the canvas,

The painting cannot be enjoyed or seen or appreciated.

Without you,

The self,

Your life can't be seen,

Enjoyed or appreciated.

So the focus now,

In our practice,

In meditation,

Is to know,

I am pure,

Free forever.

Now what will happen to many is you will say or know,

I am pure,

Free forever,

And the mind will come in and say,

But what about this?

What about my friend who said this and this reaction I had?

What about this situation that I have coming up that I don't want to have to deal with?

What about my finances?

What about my family?

What about all my problems?

So you're saying,

I am pure,

Free forever,

And now you're placing your eye back on your body,

Back on your mind,

Thinking that that is pure,

Free forever.

The body is changing,

The mind is changing,

The feelings are changing,

The thoughts are changing.

Those things that bothered you a year ago,

Five years ago,

Ten years ago,

You might not even remember what they are.

They've all changed.

But you,

The knower,

You,

The pure,

Free forever being,

Is forever unchanging.

So when you surrender all of your ideas,

Thoughts,

Beliefs that are the human mind,

Waking state consciousness,

To that pure,

Free forever state,

And when I say surrender,

I don't mean give it up,

Lose it,

Destroy it.

I just mean notice that space,

Know that when there's a space and no particular thought is there bothering you at that time,

The senses are turned inward,

The space of meditation,

The fourth state of consciousness.

Now acknowledge that state as who you are.

So know that space,

Pure,

Free forever,

And realize that is who I am.

Now it's very tricky because the mind doesn't like this.

The mind wants to borrow that power from the self and say,

No,

My ego is important.

I am important.

What I want,

What I desire,

What I need,

What I crave is important.

This is only because this practice hasn't been done enough.

So you're not established yet completely in pure,

Free forever.

When you are completely established that you,

That me,

That I is pure,

Free forever,

And not the limited,

Changing,

Illusory experiences of the body and the mind and the waking state life,

When you are completely established in that,

The example is often given like the lotus flower that sits on the water.

The waves might go over it,

The water might touch it,

But the roots remain fixed in the self,

Fixed in the earth,

Which the example is of the self,

And the water never affects it,

Never drowns the lotus.

You are that same pure,

Free forever,

Undivided consciousness.

You meaning all of you,

All of us,

All the eyes.

And you know this because you have had the direct experience either in meditation or in those times during the day when you're just space.

If you notice them throughout the day,

You'll see there are times when you are fine,

You are established in you as space,

Unless the mind comes in,

Which is a fleeting experience of thoughts,

Concepts,

Beliefs,

Cravings,

Then you are you.

So the technique then to know you is to follow those thoughts back to their source,

From where they came.

So now you become the master of your life,

Of your thoughts,

Of your experience.

Space mastery doesn't come through your ego,

And your mind cannot even reach there,

Because the mind is an outcome of it,

Just like the sprout doesn't know the seed,

But the seed came first,

The self came first.

The self is all that there is.

And as you tune in more and more to that pure,

Free,

Forever self,

And just know,

Realize that space is you,

Then that movement of consciousness through the tools of this beautiful human incarnation,

This beautiful life that you have been given,

Can operate most effectively,

Unless the sanskars,

Or those deep impressions of suffering and pain,

Will be burned through your meditation,

Through your attention on pure,

Free,

Forever.

They don't stand a chance,

And eventually they will lessen and lessen.

And rather than your mind bringing you to pain and suffering,

And duality and cravings,

And trying to get satisfaction and happiness through the experience of all the different diverse forms,

You start to see it all just like you do in the dream,

Because now you wake up from the waking state into the fourth state of consciousness,

In the same way that you wake up from the dream into the waking state,

And you cancel the dream,

And you say the dream was not true.

Now this waking state is true.

In the same way,

You wake up from the waking state into the fourth state,

And you become aware that the waking state is no different than the dream.

It's just changing experiences for a limited time period,

Maximum a hundred and so years of what we call the human life.

But that who you were before you were born,

That who you will always remain forever eternal,

Is right now in this eternal presence,

In this very moment.

You are that already.

You are pure.

You are free.

You are forever.

So let's understand what these terms mean.

Pure means the very self,

Is not the mind,

Is not the conditions,

Which can be pure or impure,

Depending on what your life experiences have been.

Pure is not that it is clean.

Pure means that this space is unchanging,

Undying,

Immortal,

And blissful.

So it is pure.

It is free because it's not bound by the mind and the conditions.

On the level of mind in the human life,

Freedom doesn't exist.

You're born into a family.

You have family members that you have to attend to.

You have possible spouse,

Children,

Parents,

Grandparents,

And so on and so forth.

And they may all make demands on you,

And you feel bound in the human waking state.

However,

That self that you are is eternally free.

So when you tune into the freedom that you are,

Then whatever the dream,

The illusion of the waking state,

You can play it like the best actor on the stage,

Because you know you are free.

You are completely fulfilled and satisfied within yourself,

So nothing else is needed.

If you're stuck somewhere,

Your flight doesn't go.

If you're unable to have your preference met,

You tune into who you are,

Which is already free,

And not in this imaginary cage of your body and your mind that thinks,

If I do this or if I have this,

Then I'll feel free.

If I leave this relationship,

Then I'll feel free.

If I find a new one,

Then I'll feel free.

If my children or parents are the way I need them to be,

Then I'll feel free.

No.

Freedom you already are.

So at any time,

When you tune into that space and not believing or engaging your mind,

Ideas,

Preferences,

Desires,

Then you are that freedom right now.

And that freedom that you are right now is forever.

It's not based on that which is changing.

It's not based on birth or death.

It has no fear of birth or death,

Because it is the pure knowledge that you forever remain.

And you will never see your death,

Because death does not exist for the pure,

Free,

Forever being.

So there's no fear.

There's no worry.

There's no doubt when you know the eternal,

Immortal,

Pure,

Free,

Forever being that you are right now.

So the practice is then,

Know I am pure,

Free,

Forever,

And realize that as your true nature.

Anything else other than that is canceled.

Anything else that comes from the mind,

Emotions,

Feelings,

Are seen for what they are.

They're workings of the waking state consciousness,

The joy of living.

But they're not you,

Because you are the whole.

So there's two ways to look at it.

Either it's not me,

I am pure,

Free,

Forever,

Or I am the whole,

Pure,

Free,

Forever.

Whichever way works in that situation can be used,

Because the truth is you are all.

But all doesn't mean you are individual body separate.

All means you are self alone,

That very consciousness,

That fourth state,

Turiya,

Which is existing alone everywhere.

So as you tune in in meditation to I am pure,

Free,

Forever,

I am immortal and blissful.

Amaram ham madhuram ham.

And any time,

Any doubt,

Fear,

Pain comes,

You have the gift of this awareness through the mantra,

Amaram ham madhuram ham.

Amaram ham madhuram ham.

I am immortal,

I am blissful.

Amaram ham madhuram ham.

And you can see how the ham becomes absorbed in that space.

So with each repetition of mantra,

Your mind is freed,

Is released into the space.

Amaram ham space.

Madhuram ham space.

Amaram ham space.

Madhuram ham space.

Amaram ham space.

Madhuram ham space.

And from this,

You can see that that space that you are is forever present at the back of it all,

Like that canvas.

And through the repetition of mantra,

Absorbing yourself in that space,

You will get freed from the waking state of consciousness.

Slowly and slowly,

This space of pure,

Free,

Forever will burn all the sanskars,

Meaning that they'll have no power over you.

And you'll come to know and realize your true self,

Pure,

Free,

Forever.

Amaram ham madhuram ham.

Amaram ham madhuram ham.

Amaram ham madhuram ham.
