In the beginning stages of meditation, you focus on the breath or a mantra but to advance in your practice the focus moves towards the knower of the mind and breath, the one who is always there. So in the system of the Knower, knowingness, and known, or the subject, object, and relationship we start with the obvious which is the known or object such as breath or mantra and then turn the attention to the Knower.
