I've been thinking about the word mood.
It is mostly used in a negative way and associated with being in a bad mood.
If someone says to you,
Are you in a mood?
Or,
You're moody today,
You would straight away assume that they think you are not happy.
And if you were happy in that moment,
This could make you feel unhappy.
So how do we change that word mood to mean more than just a negative word?
Well,
When we want it to express positivity,
We simply add a word in front of it,
Such as good mood,
Festive mood,
Generous mood.
But how can we lift our mood and put ourselves into a good mood?
Hello,
My name is Jacqueline and welcome to my Tranquil Spirits podcast.
It's quite understandable in life that we may experience a bad mood at one time or another.
Sometimes it's because of something we can't do or have,
Or because of something someone has said to us.
It could be because of something we have heard or seen on the news,
Or simply because we are fed up in that moment.
And all of these things are a normal human reaction to what is going on around us.
We become moody.
But when we stay in a mood,
Stay with negative feelings for too long,
It can be harder to pull ourselves back up,
More so if we live alone.
Here are some ideas you may find useful to lift your mood and bring positivity back into your life.
We all know the usual things to do,
Like meditation and exercise,
But here's some different suggestions.
The first one is smile.
The act of smiling really can turn a frown upside down,
And smiling is a great way to lift our mood.
If I can't see anything around me to smile about,
I go to an album I have created in photos on my phone and look at the pictures there.
These range from animals to my grandchildren,
Or a funny sign I saw somewhere and took a photo of.
Another way is to go and look into a mirror and simply smile at yourself.
Smile at yourself with the intention to feel better,
And not to criticise yourself because your hair doesn't look right.
Take that moment to be kind and love yourself.
Another one is to rearrange some furniture.
By changing the look of your room really can lift your spirits.
It's similar to redecorating,
Except not as much work and doesn't take as long.
By moving some furniture we can change our environment,
And it also shifts the energy around.
And life is all about energy.
It doesn't have to be a big change.
By simply moving the chair you normally sit in to a different part of your room will give you a different view and make you feel much better.
My next one is chew gum.
A strange one I know,
But the repetitive action of chewing can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety and stress.
Many of us,
Including myself,
Like to snack when we don't feel great.
But then we can become even more moody with ourselves because maybe we were trying to eat healthy or lose a little bit of weight.
Chewing gum helps eliminate snacking and calms us.
This next one is one of my favourites,
Snuggle.
Wrap a soft blanket around yourself and snuggle up on the sofa or into your favourite chair.
The feel of the blanket cocooning you is similar to a giant cuddle.
It's something I like to do most evenings,
Simply because it is so relaxing.
Next one is put something green on.
Green symbolises happiness and can help make you smile.
A lot of the time when we feel a bit down we tend to only wear dark colours.
Take more notice of what you are drawn to on sad days.
By adding a bright colour,
Any bright colour really,
If green isn't a particular colour you have in your wardrobe,
By adding a bright colour it lifts your mood like a sunny day.
Even lying a colourful piece of paper across your lap will help you feel better.
My next one is light a candle.
There is something magical about candles and watching a flickering flame can relax you.
Most evenings I light candles.
I enjoy their comfort.
I like to light candles and watch them.
On days when I feel a little out of sorts I will light a candle no matter what the time is.
By glancing at the flickering flame now and then it reminds me to breathe and relax my shoulders as I do become very tense during moments of stress.
The next one is sniff certain scents.
For some people scents help to change a mood.
Orange,
Lemon or your favourite perfume can reduce anxiety.
They can bring back a happy memory or a reminder of a special person who makes you feel good.
Lavender is especially good at relaxing and calming us.
Sniff the scent straight from their bottle or put a few drops on a tissue or in a burner,
Whichever way works for you.
The next one is achieve a goal.
Now I'm not talking about a big goal here which can cause you more anxiety but something fun like picking a pencil off the floor using only your toes.
By achieving something a little challenging but fun we can put ourselves in a good mood.
A win is always something to smile about no matter how small it is.
Now my next one may seem really strange.
It's go to the loo.
Even if you don't need to use the toilet by shutting yourself away for a few minutes with no external stimulation it can do wonders for stress.
Leave your phone outside and take this time to breathe and think about the good things in life.
Now talking about the good things in life the next one is count your blessings.
When we are feeling moody or anxious it's sometimes hard to think we have things to be thankful for but we all do.
Even your beating heart is something to be thankful for if you can't think of anything else.
By focusing and writing down what you are thankful for even the little things like a friend sent you a message we can lift our mood almost instantly.
The more we think about what we have to be thankful for the more things come to mind and the better we feel.
The next one is cuddle.
Physical touch can decrease stress and improve health.
Even hugging a tree gives an overwhelming feeling of calm.
If you've never tried it give it a go the next time you pass a tree.
If you don't have anybody around to cuddle in that moment pick up a pillow and cuddle that.
It's not quite the same but it does have a great effect.
A cuddly toy does the same.
Now my next one is declutter.
When your mood is low this is the perfect time to sort out that kitchen drawer.
By getting rid of things you don't need gives a feeling of cleansing.
When we see clutter around us our mind becomes just as jumbled and our feelings become confused.
Decluttering really helps calm the mind.
There is nothing worse than looking for something in a messed up drawer but when it's finally cleaned and tidy wow it just makes you smile when you look into it.
And finally my favourite one,
Munch on chocolate.
Not much to say here except it's true.
Try it,
It works every time for me.
So the next time you feel in a negative mood take a moment to look at what you are doing.
When you use your time in a positive way your mood will be lifted immediately.
