This meditation is a simple practice to help you understand and see through sugar cravings into their deeper expression: a longing to rediscover the 'sweetness of life.' Through meditation, you'll cultivate the perception that these "cravings" are often requests to hold some new level of self-care. We see our thoughts and emotions through the lens of kindness, seeing them not as must-dos or 'compulsions' but simply as signals that something deeper is wanting a relationship with us. You'll cultivate friendliness and a relationship with these sensations and thoughts, listening to them with curiosity and openness. Through the practice, we release both shame and justification/rationalizations on the one hand and redirect our actions towards that which enriches life. Music by Christopher Lloyd Clarke. Welcome to the meditation on transforming sugar cravings and reclaiming the sweetness of life.

Find a comfortable and quiet place where you won't be disturbed and you can sit or lie down in a relaxed position,

Closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths.

Inhaling slowly through the nose and holding for a moment and then exhaling through the mouth,

Letting go of tension in the body as you deepen your breathing.

Shift your attention now to the body,

Noticing any sensations that are alive without any judgment.

Noticing tension or ease,

Feel free to move the body so that you're a little bit more comfortable and if any tension arises you can gently breathe into that area like a soft embrace of awareness in that area of the body.

Noticing an intention around wanting more freedom or healing around your relationship with sweetness,

Pleasure,

Or joy.

Setting an intention now to learn from these sensations,

To learn from the thoughts,

To learn from emotions that are associated with sugary foods as it lives in you now.

Think about the craving for sugar or sweetness.

Where is this craving in the body?

Is it in the stomach?

Is it the throat?

Or just thoughts in the mind?

Let's bring a lot of space and awareness and curiosity into this practice as we're getting to know ourselves.

And instead of calling it a craving,

Let's simply describe the sensations in the body as they arise right now in the thoughts in the mind.

What are they?

And now taking a deep breath in,

What does sugar mean to you?

Is it a form of comfort?

A reward after a difficult experience?

A way to cope with stress?

Perhaps there's needs for ease,

Pleasure,

And joy,

Or a sense of balance.

What role or roles is sugar playing in your life?

What needs is it fulfilling?

Now let's reframe what these sensations actually are.

These sensations are not desires for a sugary thing,

But instead they're a signal.

They are a request,

A longing to bring these needs into your life.

The moment we experience these sensations in the body and thoughts arise that we might want sugar,

We can turn our attention instead to the underlying needs we're attempting to meet and look at this moment as an attempt to practice.

So every experience of craving becomes an opportunity to cultivate a little bit more freedom,

A little bit more healing and wholeness,

And redirect our organism to meeting needs in a way that aligns more and more with our values.

And every time we've made the choice to engage in eating a sugary food,

We can also practice doing so without shame,

But also without justification or rationalization.

We can bring more mindfulness and gentleness to the whole situation.

Take a deep breath in and as you breathe in,

Visualize a vibrant healthy energy entering the body with each breath.

Imagine this energy transforming the sugar craving into its higher expression,

A need,

Some underlying beautiful need or life trying to express itself.

See this energy of transformation,

Of light,

Of care and mindfulness.

See this energy transforming the longing for sugary foods into its deeper,

Truer expression,

For rest,

For nutrients,

Hydration,

Emotional support,

Love,

Care,

Connection.

See it transform into its higher expression,

Its true expression.

Through this simple practice,

Repeated over and over and over again,

You can gradually or quickly transform your relationship with sugary foods.

Acknowledge yourself in this moment for doing this powerful work,

Strengthening a different kind of response,

More compassionate understanding to your previous habits and cultivating a new relationship that is aligned with your true needs.

Giving yourself a lot of compassion for whatever this journey looks like for you.

It's going to be unique.

And as you practice,

Whether you chose to do something different or chose to eat a sugary food,

You can always look at it through the lens of mindfulness and compassion,

With curiosity,

Letting go of any stories and rationalizations and turning your attention instead to the beautiful needs the body is revealing to you and then making choices that are increasingly aligned with those needs.

How do you feel in this moment after the meditation?

Do you feel a bit more clear,

A bit more spacious?

Do you feel inspired to engage in a healthier substitute,

Like eating berries or fruit?

Or is there any insight you gained that you'd like to write down?

Or perhaps you'd like to be proactive and think about something you could do tomorrow,

Setting yourself up for more easeful aligned action later on.

You can always come back to this meditation whenever you need.

And you can always come back to the breath,

To your awareness as we make friends with the present,

As it emerges through us.

We can experience a quality of being at home in the present,

At home with our experience,

At home with our thoughts,

Our sensations,

And our feelings.

May you increasingly experience a little bit more clarity,

A little bit more inner freedom,

A little bit more compassion and self-love,

As you make friends with thoughts of sugary foods and with sensations in the body,

Experiencing more and more being at home,

Not hurrying and not repressing or suppressing,

But just seeing through the eyes of mindful wisdom and self-love.

Blessings on your journey,

Friend.

May you have a beautiful day.
