Dear friends,

The wisdom to be found in the Native American tradition will be familiar to many of us through its widely distributed and well-known quotes.

Australian Aboriginal wisdom is also a rich and complex tradition that has developed over many thousands of years.

Just like its Native American counterpart,

The Aboriginal tradition of Australia is a holistic approach to life that recognizes the interconnectedness of all things.

According to this philosophy,

Everything in the universe has a place and a purpose and it is important to maintain a balance between all things.

There is so much we can learn from these ancient traditions.

Our world grapples with environmental issues,

Social inequality and spiritual disconnection.

Faced with these challenges,

The Aboriginal principles of interconnectedness,

Balance,

Community and learning,

They offer us a powerful remedy for our current ills.

A quote from this tradition reminds us,

We are all visitors to this time,

This place.

We are just passing through.

Our purpose here is to observe,

To learn,

To grow,

To love and then we return home.

By reconnecting with the land,

With each other and with the deeper truths of our existence,

We can create a more sustainable,

A more just and a more fulfilling world.

We can create a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.

Let us give thanks for the rediscovery and redistribution of partly forgotten wisdom from these ancient traditions.

Namaste.

Tony, I always wonder whether the ancestral wisdom of the majority of people running the world today was more like, “Use and control everything that you can, fight to have it all, and to hell with tomorrow.” It must have come from a sense of scarcity, despite the abundance all around. Do you know the books of Robin Wall Kimmerer? She’s a Native American botanist and author, and she has written lovely meditative studies on plants. Her most recent book, Gathering Moss, is a delightful window on nature and thoughtful consideration of humans’ effects on it. It’s a quick read, and I bet you’d love it. Her earlier book, Braiding Sweetgrass, is also delightful and stirring, but is a serious tome, maybe 3 times as long as Gathering Moss. Thanks as always for your wisdom, positivity and insights.
