The Wolf Meditation Begin by sensing into the support you have from the ground,
Whether you're standing or seated,
And paying attention to actual sensations of contact.
Feeling a position of stability and balance,
Comfortable yet alert,
And perhaps sensing into your body,
From feet,
Legs,
Lower and upper body,
Arms,
Shoulders and head.
And when you're ready,
Noticing your breath,
Vital physical sensations,
Feeling each breath as it comes in and goes out,
Letting the breath be just as it is,
Without trying to change or to regulate it in some way,
Allowing it to flow with its own rhythm and pace,
Easy and naturally.
This breath be your breath in this moment.
As you rest here,
Letting an image or sense form in your mind's eye,
Of the most magnificent or beautiful wolf you have seen or can imagine,
Letting it gradually come into greater focus,
Its bright intelligent eyes,
Four powerful legs,
Giving a sense of stability and poise.
Feeling how strong it is,
How alive,
How dynamic,
How beautiful,
Whether seen from afar or up close.
Perhaps your wolf has a mostly white coat,
Like snow blanketing the mountains in winter,
Or is mottled grey like granite.
It may have blue eyes like a waterfall in the moonlight,
Green like the forest floor,
Or grey like dawn mists.
Observing the wolf and noting its qualities when you feel ready,
Seeing if you can bring this sense of the wolf into your own body,
Resting here so that your body and the wolf in your mind's eye become one,
Sharing in the strength,
The dynamism and the majesty of the wolf,
You become the wolf.
Grounded in your posture,
Your head becomes the wolf's head,
Supported by the rest of the body and affording a panoramic view with bright eyes and keen senses.
Your arms and legs rooted to where you're resting,
Experiencing in your body a sense of uplift from deep within your pelvis and spine.
With each deep breath as you rest here,
Becoming a little more a breathing wolf,
Alive and vital,
Yet unwavering in your inner stillness,
Completely what you are,
Beyond words and thought,
Centered and dynamic.
As you rest here,
Becoming aware of the fact that as the sun travels across the sky,
The light and shadows and colors are captured every moment in the movement of the wolf,
And that where there is life and activity,
There too is the wolf always adapting to each new day with its challenges and opportunities.
At times moving alone or within part of a bigger whole when in a pack,
People may notice the presence of the wolf and comment on how beautiful or how dangerous or how rare it is.
Yet none of this matters to the wolf,
Remaining at all times its essential self.
The wolf's magnificence and beauty are not changed one bit by whether people see it or not.
And even when visited by violent storms,
Winds,
Rain or snow,
And finding a den to shelter in,
Through it all the wolf lives on.
Through it all experiencing change in each moment,
Constantly changing yet just being itself,
Remaining a wolf regardless of the seasons,
The weather,
The moments and the days.
In summer the wolf finds carefree travels in valleys and forests.
In the autumn it runs through a sea of brilliant fire.
In winter leaving its paw prints in the blanket of snow and ice.
And with spring moving through wildflowers in the high meadows and slopes while birds sing in the trees,
Through it all the wolf continues to stalk and move,
Undaunted,
Remaining itself.
It may help us to see that our thoughts and feelings,
Preoccupations,
Our emotional storms and crises,
Even the things that happen to us each day,
Are very much like the seasons or the weather around the wolf.
We tend to take it all personally.
The weather of our own lives is not to be ignored or denied,
But approached,
Honoured,
Felt and held in our awareness.
Holding it in this way as a wolf we come to know a deeper silence and energy and wisdom.
And so in the time that remains continuing to be the wolf on your own.
It becomes the painting that shows that we are what it becomes,
Once again.
