Beginner's mind meditation.
Hi,
My name is Tim Mori.
And in this short meditation,
Going to cultivate a beginner's mind and let go of any attachments we have to the way we think things should be,
The outcomes that we expect,
And the labels that we might be giving to situations,
People,
Or things.
This meditation is short enough to use at any time during your day.
And maybe you could use it at times when you're feeling particularly tense,
Or you just need a quick recharge.
Because our tiredness can sometimes come from our thinking.
And the fact that we're resisting the experience as it is,
In favor of holding on to what we expect,
Or our past interpretation.
So just take a few moments just to get comfortable.
Position yourself so that distractions are minimized,
But be kind and accepting that if a distraction happens,
That you will happily break off this meditation and respond as you need to.
After all,
The purpose of mindfulness is not to close us away from reality,
But to help us to interact with reality and our experiences in the most resourceful way possible.
So getting comfortable and taking a nice deep breath in.
Hold it for a moment,
And let it go.
Now our breath is always happening.
If it's not,
We don't need to worry.
But sometimes when we're very busy,
Or our mind is busy,
It's lucky that it happens all by itself.
By bringing our attention to our breathing in a conscious,
Kind way,
We can actually calm our mind as well,
And calm our thinking.
So we'll take a few more in and out breaths,
Just to get our thoughts in rapport with our breathing.
Take a few more gentle in and out breaths.
In and out breaths.
That's right.
Now the fact that you've chosen to do this short meditation and follow the breathing exercises,
Means that you're already open to the idea of a fresh look at this moment,
This experience.
And with every breath we let go of,
Letting go of the breath that we no longer need.
And with every breath in,
We're welcoming the new oxygen and air into our body.
And we can do that with our experiences.
Our experiences of people,
Situations,
Or things.
We can let go our attachments and thoughts about those things,
People,
Or experiences,
As we breathe out.
And we can breathe in the idea of a beginner's mind.
So breathing in a beginner's mind,
Fresh and new,
Welcoming this experience,
This thing,
Or this person as they are right now.
And letting go of any attachments to previous ideas or expectations.
So just take the next few minutes to breathe out your previous ideas or expectations or desires.
And breathe in the fresh,
Clear beginner's mind.
Forget everything you know or expect or desire.
And just act as if this is the first time you've ever met this person,
Experienced this situation,
Or seen this thing.
That's the beginner's mind.
Breathing in beginner's mind,
Letting go of attachments.
Just practice for the next few minutes.
And when you hear my voice again.
Breathing in beginner's mind,
Letting go of attachments.
Breathing in beginner's mind,
Letting go of attachments.
Breathing in beginner's mind,
Letting go of attachments.
Breathing in beginner's mind,
Letting go of attachments.
Just breathing in a beginner's mind.
And breathing out any attachments.
That's right.
Now you've been following my voice and you've been listening to the words and meditating.
And you've been breathing.
And this means that you're cultivating a beginner's mind.
And simply with this practice,
You'll find that you'll be more resourceful,
Or at the very least open,
To experiences and people and things as they are in this moment.
And it is only ever our thoughts about things,
Experiences or people that creates how we respond to them.
So with their beginner's mind practice,
Our responses can also be fresh and new.
Thank you for joining me on this meditation.
