This is a guided relaxation exercise to help you to observe your thoughts by slowing them down and sorting through them one by one. It teaches a technique of using imagery to gain control over your thoughts, to take a look at them one at a time, so that you can gain insight into yourself, get to know yourself better, and take control of your mind.

We are going to do some much needed work today on calming your thoughts.

Do you ever feel like you have thoughts racing and swirling around inside your head?

Does it sometimes feel that there are too much going on up there?

Too many thoughts and they are moving too quickly for you to really sort them out.

Today we will work on slowing and calming the thoughts in your mind.

So let's begin by taking a deep breath.

A nice slow breath in through the nose,

Hold for a moment and then slowly release the breath.

Very good.

One more time.

Take a nice slow breath in through the nose,

Hold for a moment and then slowly release the breath.

Now you can allow your breathing to remain nice and slow,

Peaceful breathing,

But without your direct attention.

As you tune into your thoughts,

Imagine what they might look like as they swirl around in your head.

There are so many and they are moving so fast.

It might be like the inside of a tornado,

Wind swirling around,

Everything moving so quickly.

So much force and power that you cannot tell up from down,

Right from left,

Cannot focus on any one thing.

So overwhelming,

So much pressure,

However,

You can learn to take control of your thoughts.

You can control how quickly they move,

How many there are at a time,

Even what the thoughts are that you have in your head.

The first step is to gain control of the tornado and to help it to slow down.

And you do this by closing your eyes there inside your mind,

Sitting down and taking some deep breaths.

And as you exhale those breaths,

Release the stress and tension that you have inside you.

Because that stress and tension is fueling the tornado.

So as you release those breaths and exhale the stress and tension,

You feel yourself begin to calm.

So continue with these breaths and as you exhale,

Release the winds,

The force in the tornado.

Very good.

With each exhalation,

The tornado reduces in intensity.

And before too long,

It spins out completely.

First to be replaced by strong winds.

But as you continue to exhale,

Take slow to a gentle breeze.

And when you feel the gentle breeze against your skin,

You can open your eyes there within your mind to view the change that has come over the landscape.

Now that the tornado is gone,

You see that it is a beautiful day with the sun shining down,

Warming you.

Leaves blowing gently in the trees.

Clouds drifting lazily by.

And you lay back on the soft ground,

Look up at the sky and you see your thoughts drifting by on the clouds.

And you can watch them as they pass by one at a time.

Such a pleasant way to observe your thoughts.

And you watch as they drift by one by one.

Take notice of each thought as it drifts by.

Observe and accept it without judgment and then allow it to drift on,

Moving gently with the breeze.

Take time to observe each and every thought one at a time they drift by.

And you observe them and accept them and allow them to continue on.

It's very good.

You may lay here observing your thoughts for as long as you like.

And when you are ready,

Simply open your eyes.
