The mala is a tool used in meditation with each bead representing a mantra or prayer.
There are 108 marma points in Ayurveda,
A traditional system of medicine from India.
Those 108 marma points are considered to be the key energy points in the body.
There are also 108 nadis or energy channels that converge at the heart chakra.
In Vedic astrology,
There are 27 lunar mansions and each has four quarters.
When multiplied,
This gives 108,
Representing the entire cosmos.
Furthermore,
In Vedic cosmology,
There are said to be 108 worlds in the universe,
With the earth at the centre.
The number 108 is also significant in the epic poem the Mahabharata,
Where it is said that there were 108 participants in the great battle.
In addition,
There are 108 names for the god Shiva,
Each representing a different aspect of his divine nature.
Beyond the Vedic tradition,

In Buddhism,
There are 108 delusions and 108 virtues to be cultivated.
In Tibetan Buddhism,

With each bead representing one of the 108 worldly desires.
In Zen Buddhism,
108 bows are performed in the New Year's Eve ceremony.
In Jainism,
There are 108 virtues that must be cultivated in order to attain enlightenment.
Additionally,

In Sikhism,
The number 108 is associated with the gurus,
As well as the number of prayers beads on a mala,
As well as the number of times that the moral mantra,

Which means that it is divisible by the sum of its digits.
It is also the product of 9 and 12,
Both of which are considered highly auspicious numbers.

The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth,
And the distance between the earth and the sun is approximately 108 times the diameter of the sun.
In contemporary spiritual practices,
