A gentle meditation reading Psalm 89 from Nan Merrill's Psalms for Praying. Before beginning, there is time to settle and come to stillness, then, as the Psalm is read there is an opportunity to welcome the words or phrases that stand out to you to be received deeply and offer their gift. This version of the Psalms is not a direct translation but is kind, gentle, and intimate.

Welcome to this Lectio Divina on the second part of Psalm 89.

As you arrive find a comfortable position,

Maybe take some deeper wider breaths and let your body sink and soften where it's possible.

Maybe the day so far can fall away,

That you receive the grace to be present in this moment.

As distractions or thoughts come along acknowledge them and let them dissolve.

Know that those thoughts and distractions are seen and known and responded to.

Welcome the stillness and the peace of the beloved.

May you be open to receive the love and goodness of the beloved and the gifts that want to be given to you through these words.

I'm going to read the whole part of this psalm once and then read a few verses twice more.

The second part of Psalm 89.

You have made yourself known to the faith-filled.

You set them on the path of peace.

The gift you sent to teach us love invites us to eternal life.

Through the heart of all hearts you opened the way to life.

Your steadfast love came among us giving us strength.

Fear shall not overcome us,

We will not give in to doubt.

For your love casts us out fear and gives rise to forgiveness of those who would do us wrong.

Yes your faithfulness and your abiding love are with us and in your name we can do all good things.

Through you is our purpose made known that we might know your will and make it our own.

In our gratitude we cry out you are the beloved,

The most high our very breath.

Through you we are born anew.

The spirit of truth comes to us forever and your covenant stands firm throughout eternity.

We will know you as loving companion presence now and in the life to come.

If your children turn their backs and follow not love's way,

If they oppress the weak and befriend injustice,

They will separate themselves from love and will dwell with fear.

Even so my steadfast love will await their return.

My faithfulness will remain sure.

My covenant stands true forever as does the life that begets life.

You are invited to holiness to come to the fullness of your birthright.

For love shall endure forever and light as the sun before us.

Like the stars they shall be established forever.

They shall stand true while the firmament remains.

This second reading focuses in on a few verses.

Notice any words or phrases that capture your attention.

Your faithfulness and your abiding love are with us and in your name we can do all good things.

Through you is our purpose made known that we might know your will and make it our own.

In our gratitude we cry out you are the beloved,

The most high,

Our very breath.

Through you we are born anew.

The spirit of truth comes to us forever and your covenant stands firm throughout eternity.

On this third and final reading,

Focusing again on those verses,

Welcome the words and phrases that captured your attention into the deeper parts of yourself.

Bring their gift and offer you what you need at this time.

Be curious about whether there is a response that's being invited or a gift that's being given.

Friends may you go from this Lectio Divina in blessing and grace.

May you go knowing yourself loved and seen.

And I trust that the words or phrases that captured your attention continue to bring their gift to you.

Thank you so much for listening.

Be blessed.

Amen.

You
