The first week after surgery or a medical procedure can bring physical and emotional discomfort. This meditation is inspired by practices that supported me after a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. While not specific to any procedure, it offers gentle breathwork focused on all that will go right within you. Sending wishes for comfort, strength, and healing.

Hello,

Welcome.

This is Teresa Anne on week one of your healing journey.

Perhaps it was after a surgery,

A medical procedure,

An emotional healing.

But as we move forward,

Trying to focus on all those things that will go right for you in this week one.

Reflecting on my week one after my surgery,

I remember feeling very foggy and pain management kept me a little bit loopy and then I was feeling often weepy.

A five minute walk was a challenge.

I felt uncomfortable and bloated in my own body.

I needed to ask for help for simple things like putting on socks,

Walking upstairs,

And I was sleeping in a recliner.

By the end of the week,

I put my socks on by myself.

I was able to empty the top of the dishwasher and slept in my own bed.

My pain was managed and I was able to walk two miles on the pavement.

The progress over seven days was slow,

But it was progress and I'm truly grateful for that.

And as you're going throughout the days,

Focusing on what went right and being kind to yourself.

I'm going to invite you today to practice three anger breaths with me,

And then 10 breaths on your own,

And then three again with me.

Thinking about the position that is most comfortable for you today.

Perhaps it's sitting in a chair,

Alert but not stressed,

With both feet on the ground.

Maybe it's sitting in a chair,

Laid back,

Or laying down in a bed.

Deciding where you want to place your hands.

Perhaps it's on the area of the body that needs healing,

Over your heart,

Or palms up,

Receiving healing.

Deciding whether you want to open your eyes with a soft gaze,

Or close them.

Knowing you can close them at any point,

Or open them at any point during our exercise.

Knowing that your mind will wander throughout the time,

And just inviting it back again to your breath,

And not worrying about how you're breathing.

Your body knows how to breathe.

Just noticing.

And with that,

Notice your breath right now.

And maybe inviting it along to have longer exhales.

And now I welcome you to inhale,

Two,

Three,

Four.

Exhale,

Now sending kind wishes to yourself.

May you be happy.

May you be healthy.

May you be free from suffering.

And may you be at ease.

Before you open your eyes or lift your gaze,

Think of someone,

Something,

Or someplace you're truly grateful for.

And focusing on the following words.

Things are not always done by starts.

You may drive my awkward pace,

But slow and steady wins the race.

This is from Robert Lloyd's Adaption,

Spoken by the tortoise.

So perhaps this week,

Embracing your inner tortoise,

Knowing slow and steady will get you there.

Be kind to yourself.

Listen to your body.

Rest when it's needed.

And best for healthy healing.
