If you struggle to have enough time to meditate then this is just for you! It’s tempting to think that mindfulness and meditation is reserved for only the perfect conditions. Mountain tops in Nepal, deserted beaches in Zanzibar. But it’s simply not true. Every moment you’re alive is an opportunity. Today we will build mindfulness into something you do every day already. Brushing your teeth.

Hey welcome to this very special meditation practice.

This is all about bringing mindfulness into your everyday activities so we can live a richer,

More full life.

It also helps if you have a hard time finding enough time to meditate during the day.

You can just kind of piggyback it along with other activities that you have to do anyway.

And brushing your teeth is definitely one of the things you should be doing every day.

So get your toothbrush,

Get your toothpaste and let's get going.

I'll be acting as your dental coach,

Your meditation teacher and your timer.

Very much your mental hygienist so all you have to do is follow along with me.

Start by loading that toothbrush with a bit of toothpaste.

Usually about a pea size amount is more than enough.

Now I'm going to suggest going from one side all the way to the other but you can do it in any fashion you want but you're welcome to follow along with me.

So start with the top row of teeth.

Start all the way back on one side and start your brushing.

Now the first thing I want you to do is pay attention to the pressure you're using.

You actually don't need that much pressure to remove plaque so try to lighten up on the pressure you're using and don't forget the gums either.

Now to maximise the amount of plaque removal on your gums you need to angle the brush to about 45 degrees so you can do that now.

You should be about half way through the top row of teeth.

If you have a manual toothbrush think about going in circles not back and forth.

Nice work,

That's your technique sorted.

Let's move across to the bottom row bringing in that same pressure,

That same angle on the gums,

Massaging not scrubbing.

Make sure that we get that gum line but not so hard that it hurts.

You're doing great.

Should be almost finished with that bottom row of teeth now.

Good stuff.

Now we're going back to that top row brushing the chewing parts of your teeth.

Same deal,

Gently in circles like you're waxing a valuable car.

Now that you have the technique down can you start to bring some awareness into how it feels to have that toothbrush in your mouth.

Great stuff.

Now moving to that bottom row chewing surfaces.

Same deal,

Same technique.

This time can you bring some awareness into how the toothpaste smells and as you do so can you think about where the smell is located.

What is the intensity?

Moving now back to the top row just brushing gently the back side of the teeth.

Great stuff.

Back to the bottom row,

Same thing.

Back of the teeth now,

The tongue side.

This time aware of any taste,

Location,

Intensity,

Sensation.

And now that we've focused on taste,

Last thing very important,

Five circle scrubs on your tongue.

That's right,

Nice clean tongue.

And you can spit,

Rinse out your mouth.

Close your eyes and take note of what it feels like to have this beautiful clean mouth.

Notice the lovely fresh sensation in your mouth.

Now open up your eyes,

Look in that mirror and flash this great beautiful smile that you worked so hard on.

See you again soon.
