An appointment with the true Self that I am,

Not what I take myself to be.

I take myself to be a limited individual who had birth and who will have death,

Who is sometimes happy,

Sometimes unhappy,

Who takes various roles,

Sometimes father,

Sometimes son,

Sometimes mother,

Sometimes daughter,

Sometimes husband,

Sometimes wife,

Friend.

That is what I take myself to be.

That is what I think I am.

Sometimes a speaker,

Sometimes a listener,

Sometimes an eater.

Thus going through various roles.

That is what I take myself to be.

But the true nature of myself should be such that does not change.

What is the thread that connects all these different roles,

Changing roles?

What is the changeless thread that informs all these roles,

That pervades all these roles and that is still not confined to any role?

Right now I am a waker having experiences of the external physical world during which I assume these various roles.

But then when I fall asleep,

This waker is no more.

There a new person arises having his own body,

Having his own world.

That is a dreamer.

The waker has no entry into the world of dream,

There a new person arises.

The dreamer also gives its place to the sleeper.

The role of dreamer also is given up.

The role of waker is given up and the dreamer comes in his place.

The role of dreamer also is given up and the sleeper comes in his place.

The dreamer or the waker have no entry into the world of sleep.

Then the sleeper also gives its place to the waker.

Thus these changes are going on constantly,

Cyclic changes.

To see these changes objectively I have to create a distance.

I can see how the waker from morning till night goes through a number of experiences assuming various roles,

Feeling various emotions,

Happy,

Unhappy,

Hurt,

Guilty,

Angry,

Jealous,

Kind,

Loving,

Compassionate.

The waker goes through all these different experiences and emotions.

But then this world of waking is only left here.

And I walk away from this leaving everything into the waking world.

I go to the dream world.

There also I go through similar experiences,

Leave the dream world also there,

Enter the world of deep sleep,

When I am not even aware of myself,

Not aware of the world around me.

That is also given up again,

Enter the world of waking.

Putting on different costumes and giving up those costumes.

Putting on the costume of the gross body.

I am the waker.

That costume is dropped.

Wearing the costume of subtle body,

I am the dreamer.

That costume also is dropped.

Wearing the costume of causal body,

I am the sleeper.

I gain various designations depending upon what costume I wear.

Like an actor,

Sometimes a beggar,

Sometimes a king,

Sometimes a minister.

These roles come and go.

Even during the waking state,

The happy self comes and goes.

The unhappy self comes and goes.

The jealous self comes and goes.

The kind self comes and goes.

And all these changes.

What is a changeless thread?

That is what is a true nature of myself.

While living my life during the waking state,

I forget the fact that these are all different roles.

The roles are in me,

But I am not the roles.

The roles are because of me,

But I am independent of them.

If I was not independent,

I could not have given up one role and taken up another one.

How easily I am changing the costumes that shows costumes I am not.

The body,

Mind,

These are the costumes.

I take up these costumes at will and let them go.

I am independent of the costumes.

That which constantly reveals itself as I,

I,

I.

The I,

Even the ego is not I,

Because the ego also is not consistent.

In the deep sleep stage,

Even the ego is not there.

The I is still there.

That which is consistently present all the time,

That changeless thread of consciousness I am.

The individual self possessed of this body-mind complex,

That is what I take myself to be.

But now,

I am independent of this body,

Independent of the mind.

The age of the body is not my age.

The state of the mind is not my state.

I am ever independent.

I am ever free.

I am an actor who performed the costume at will and gives it up at will.

I who is passing through these various experiences,

Various states,

Various costumes.

Awaking is a big costume.

Within waking there are many costumes.

The dream is another costume,

Within that there are other costumes.

The costumes come and go.

The waking,

Dream,

Deep sleep come and go.

The happy and unhappy comes and goes.

The mother and daughter comes and goes.

The husband or father also comes and goes.

That which is free from coming and going,

That changeless consciousness I am.

Jnana Nandirubha Jnana Nandirubha Jnana Nandirubha Jnana Nandirubha Jnana Nandirubha Jnana Nandirubha Sivoham,

Just as Lord Shiva in the midst of the ghosts and goblins and snakes.

How Lord Shiva is serene,

Independent of them.

There is a gentle smile which reveals the joy,

Affinity,

Joy,

Detachment,

Purity,

Is the nature of Shiva.

That Shiva I am,

That is Chit or consciousness,

Ananda,

The joy.

That is my Rupa,

Swarupa,

The nature,

The true nature of myself.

Which in spite of assuming countless roles,

Remains unaffected by roles,

Remains established in its own glory.

That Shiva I am.
