Dr.

Andrew Weil,

The integrative medical specialist says,

If I had to limit my advice on healthier living to just one tip,

It would be simply to learn how to breathe correctly.

When you focus on your breath,

You engage the parasympathetic system and you start to relax.

A deceptively simple technique is to count the breath.

It's a basic form of conscious breathing.

You count the breath as it passes through.

Its purpose is to pull the mind away from distractions towards the life force that's always flowing in you.

If your attention wanders at any time,

You will likely lose your count.

Be patient with yourself and you can start at one each time you lose count.

If you notice that you're counting seven,

Eight,

It means you lost the count to a thought.

Don't get frustrated.

Just notice what is on your mind,

What thought pulled you off course.

Acknowledge it and return to one.

This is Suresh from Blossom Meditation.

I'll guide you on to sleep with breath counting.

Gently close your eyes or lower your eyelids and take a few deep breaths.

A couple of more times.

Then let the breath come naturally without trying to influence it.

Ideally it should be quiet and slow but its depth and rhythm may vary.

Once you're attentive to the breath,

Count one to yourself as you exhale.

Then breathe in.

Next time you exhale,

Count two.

Keep the count through each exhale to a count of five.

You can begin a new cycle of counting and repeat the process.

One,

Two,

Three,

Four,

Five.

If you prefer you can also count both the inhale and the exhale.

Then you will get a count of ten.

One on the inhale,

Two on the exhale,

Three on the inhale,

Four on the exhale,

Five on the inhale,

Six on the exhale,

Seven on the inhale,

Eight on the exhale,

Nine on the inhale and ten on the exhale.

So choose a method that you want to count and keep counting.

I'll go silent and you can drift off to sleep.
