Watching the Breath for a Count of 108. The number 108 is special in a number of traditions and even in science. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is roughly 108 times the diameter of the Sun. The distance between the Moon and the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon. There are 108 sacred sites in India. A Japamala or mala is a string of usually 108 prayer beads used for a spiritual practice known in Sanskrit as japa. In this audio, there is an introduction of a technique for counting, the counting of the breath itself unguided with nature sounds, and an ending by ringing the bell

We are going to breathe for 108 counts.

108 is a special number in a number of traditions and even in science.

The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth.

The distance between the earth and the sun is roughly 108 times the diameter of the sun.

In India there are 108 sacred sites.

A japa mala or a mala is a string of prayer beads used for a spiritual practice known in Sanskrit as the japa.

It is usually made from 108 beads.

It's hard to keep the count for 108 without the beads.

So what we are going to do is we are going to count for 12 and do that 9 times.

12 times 9 is equal to 108.

Let's start a technique of keeping the count in the fingers from your grandfather.

You can either go clockwise or anti-clockwise.

The key technique is to use your thumb to circulate through the points on the fingers.

We are going to keep the count of 12 on the right hand and the count of 9 on the left.

Let's get started.

Start by opening your right palm and notice that you have 12 horizontal lines,

3 per finger in the 4 fingers of the palm.

Our goal is to use them for counting.

Start by bringing your thumb to the bottom of the pinky finger and move the thumb circularly touching each of the lines going all the way.

Then you complete 12.

So one round of this is 12 and we have to do 9 more of this.

And the count of 9 will keep that count on the left palm using the same technique.

So find a comfortable sitting position.

You can close your eyes to maintain the focus on the breath.

Take a deep inhale through the nose and exhale out through the mouth with the ha sound.

Do that a couple of more times.

Inhale through the nose,

Exhale out through the mouth.

Last time.

Inhale through the nose and exhale out through the mouth.

Sit quietly for a minute or so.

Then we are going to start a 108 breath meditation practice.

Takes about 7 or so minutes to do this.

On your first exhale you are going to count to 1.

The next exhale you are going to count to 2 until you reach 108.

We will do one round of 12 before we start the 108 practice.

Exhale 1.

Exhale 2.

Exhale 3.

Exhale 4.

Exhale 5.

Exhale 6.

Exhale 7.

Exhale 8.

Exhale 9.

Exhale 10.

Exhale 11.

Exhale 12.

So that's one round of 12 and we have to do 9 more.

Ring a bell after about 8 minutes or so.

See you on the other side.

Thank you.

Congratulations on completing the 108 breath meditation.

Be aware of your breathing.

Notice how this takes attention away from your thinking and creates space.

The card down.

Remember to use the power of the breath to create space in everything you do.

Keep smiling,

Counting and keeping the focus on the breath.

I'll see you again soon.

I really enjoyed this meditation Suresh. The breathing is a lot faster than I have been doing. I suppose it needs to be shallow breathing. Do you recommend breathing in and out the nose, or in the nose and out the mouth? Thanks again for a great lesson on a new breathing practice for me πŸ™
