Remembrance is the name we Sufis give to our form of heart-focused meditation, where we remember the Name of our Lord and who we are as human beings in creation. As you listen to or repeat the Divine phrases, please focus your attention gently on your heart. The Arabic phrase ‘la ilaha illa’llah’ means ‘There is no god but God’ or ‘There is no being worthy of worship except God’.

Please join me in a five minute remembrance using the phrase,

La ilaha illa la.

There is no God but God.

There is no being worthy of worship but God.

Remembrance is the name we Sufis give to our form of heart-focused meditation,

Where we remember the name of our Lord and who we are as human beings in creation.

As we repeat this divine phrase together,

Please let your attention focus gently on your heart.

I like this for all sorts of reasons: the chant itself, its translation and especially its rhythm, the fact that this is an a capella solo chant (very different effect than choral, and the addition of new age-y “soundscapes” generally doesn’t work for me), the lo-if recording (even the crumpled paper has its interest!), and the very human delivery of the vocal. Hearing the voice occasionally stumble or miss the beat drove home for me what a physical act chanting is, and (in keeping with the text) how mortal we all are.

My Sufi guide said that this can also be translated as "There is nothing but God" and even without knowing the meaning the many "ah" sounds in this sacred phrase open the heart when spoken or chanted. I am so happy to find this familiar Sufi chant here. Thank you!
