Ocean Meditation
by Steve Taylor
Our beings are like the ocean - there can be turbulence on the surface, but just below the surface, there are endless depths of stillness and harmony.

Ocean meditation.
I'd like you to picture in your mind the surface of the ocean.
Picture the turbulent waves of the ocean spraying and swelling and also hear the roar of the ocean,
The roar of the waves and imagine in your mind that swelling roaring ocean continuing for a few moments listening to the roar seeing the constant movement of the waves are crashing and the foaming of the waves.
I'd like you to make an association between that turbulent surface of the sea and the surface of your mind.
The surface of your mind may also be turbulent with the constant motion of thoughts,
The swelling of different associations,
Emotions rising,
New images,
New memories rising to the surface creating a constant motion and a constant turbulence within you.
So just for a few moments allow yourself to watch the swelling and the foaming of your thoughts,
The waves of thoughts in your mind just like the waves of the ocean.
But returning to the image of the ocean I'd like you to picture how just below the surface of the ocean,
Just one or two meters below the surface,
Suddenly we move into quietness and stillness.
Below the turbulent surface of the ocean there are depths of stillness and harmony and quietness stretching way way down to the bottom of the ocean,
An endless stillness and quietness.
And in the same way just below the surface of our minds,
Below the turbulence of thought,
There are endless depths of stillness and harmony just below the surface stretching all the way down right into the depths of our being,
The endless depths of our being.
So now let's allow ourselves to fall,
To dive into that stillness.
Now picture yourself falling below the surface of your mind,
Diving below the turbulence on the surface and falling gently into the stillness and harmony underneath it.
Just like a diver who falls into the stillness of the deep ocean.
Let's allow ourselves to dive deeper below the surface,
Lower down into our bodies feeling our being stretching way way beneath the surface,
Down into the whole of our bodies.
And feel the stillness,
Feel the harmony around us as we dive lower.
Sense the calmness and stillness all around us.
And now as we look up we can still see the surface of the ocean,
We can still see the waves on the surface,
We can still see the foam and the swelling of the waves,
But we're so immersed in stillness that its movement doesn't affect us.
We're content to just allow the waves to pass by way above us without being disturbed by them.
But as we watch the waves way above us on the surface we become aware of how slowly their motion begins to slow down.
We can sense spaces between the different waves,
Waves,
Spaces that become larger and larger.
We can sense how the movement begins to settle,
The surface of the ocean begins to settle,
The swelling and foaming and the roar of the surface of our minds begins to settle,
To calm,
To quieten.
So that now when we look up we only see stillness on the surface of the ocean.
The stillness that we can sense all around us is also on the surface and there's no distinction between the depths of our being and the surface of our being.
The surface is as still as the depths of our being.
So let's allow ourselves to float gently within the deep stillness of our being like a diver in the deep ocean.
As we float we can feel the stillness all around us.
We can almost feel ourselves brushing against the stillness,
Touching the stillness,
Feeling ourselves immersed in it.
We can sense that it fills us inside as well.
The stillness is everywhere around us and it's everywhere inside us as well.
And the deeper we go,
The more still we feel,
The more harmony we encounter,
The more our being settle into stillness and peacefulness.
And now let's allow ourselves to return slowly to the surface of our minds,
Just like a diver slowly rises through the stillness of the deep ocean towards the surface of the ocean again.
As we rise towards the surface,
As we emerge from the ocean,
We're aware again that the surface of the ocean is just as still,
Just as harmonious as the depths.
There's just stillness around us everywhere we look and there's no distinction between the surface of our beings and the depths.
We can feel the stillness right now stretching all the way down into the depths of our beings.
So as we bring this meditation to a close,
Remember in your daily life that whenever your mind becomes turbulent,
Whenever it's filled with a swelling and foaming of thoughts or emotions,
Whenever you feel restless and stressed,
Remember that you can always dive right into the stillness of your deeper being at any moment.
You can allow yourself to gently fall below the surface and dive into the stillness,
Which is always there no matter how turbulent our minds become.
It's always there just as the deep stillness of the ocean is always there beneath its turbulent surface.

Great meditation. I like that it starts with the turbulence of the ocean and then slowly goes deeper but always acknowledges the surface.
