Daoist Full Moon Meditation.

In chapter 39 of the Dao De Jing,

Laozi says,

In ancient times,

All things had attained the One.

Later on,

He says in the same chapter,

High praise is really not praise.

For this reason,

One should not desire to be exquisite like priceless jade,

But rather humble like simple stone.

This verse describes the world in order as it is,

At peace and restful movement.

In this meditation,

We can simply relax and sense what this feels like.

In the beginningless beginning,

All things align themselves with One,

Or Dao.

Heaven,

Earth,

The Valley Spirit,

And other countless spirits all align themselves with Dao.

All living things,

Or what Laozi calls the ten thousand beings,

Align themselves with Dao.

Empty words,

He says,

And flowery praise are not to be trusted.

The true sage does not covet things like exquisite jade,

But holds herself humble as a simple stone.

Daoist Full Moon Meditation.

This practice can be used when we want to explore the feeling of being One,

When we need a reminder or want to relocate our center,

Or whenever we long for Dao.

It is helpful when we are struggling to sleep or when we just need to find a calm space within ourself.

If you do this practice in the evening,

Be sure to allow the energy of the Moon to move down to your lower Dantian.

If too much energy stays in your head,

It could keep you from sleeping.

Sit on the edge of a chair or on a cushion,

Lie down on your back or even stand.

Close your eyes and begin doing Dantian breathing.

Dantian is the field of elixir or the field of medicine,

A very important energy center of the body,

Located in the lower abdomen,

Three inches behind the navel.

So in Dantian breathing,

We are using natural breathing,

Which means as we inhale,

Our abdomen expands.

As we exhale,

Our abdomen contracts.

And remember,

As we are expanding our abdomen,

We want to expand it not just to the front,

But up to two sides and the back as well,

Like a balloon blowing up a balloon,

It becomes rounder and larger and then contracts down when you let the air out.

So we're breathing through our nose and very important to put the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth.

This connects the two main energy channels of the Dumei and Renmai.

So sitting quietly,

Eyes closed,

Breathing through the nose,

Slowly,

Deeply inhale,

Expand,

Exhale,

Contract.

And now,

In your mind's eye,

See the bright full moon hovering just overhead.

And now,

In your mind's eye,

See the bright full moon hovering just overhead.

Feel its golden light pouring down over the top of your head,

Your bai hui,

And then through your central channel,

Chengbai,

Down into your lower Dantian,

Filling it with the rich yin energy of the moon.

The moon represents yin energy,

While the sun represents yang energy.

So here we are connecting with that calming,

Soothing,

Relaxing,

Healing yin energy of the moon.

You either draw it into the top of your head,

The bai hui,

That thousand meeting point,

Or what in yoga is called the crown chakra,

Or you can breathe it into your third eye.

And just let the soothing yin energy of the moon fill your being with peace and relaxation.

Feel all your extraneous thoughts and feelings and emotions that are always bubbling over the top of the cauldron of your inner being,

And then fill your body with the energy of the moon.

Feel all the emotions that are always bubbling over the top of the cauldron of your inner being.

Start to relax and slow down,

And all these various thoughts and feelings start to meld together into one,

What Lao Tzu calls returning to the one,

Or returning to the source.

So we sit for a few minutes and just allow this yin energy of the moon to come pouring into your body through the top of your head or your third eye,

And fill you with this warm,

Calming,

Relaxing,

Soothing yin energy.

So of course this meditation will be even more powerful if it's done under the full moon.

Another practice you can do under the full moon is to swallow the yin energy of the moon.

Stand under the full moon and have a feeling that you're inhaling the yin energy of the moon and then swallow it with a gulping sound down into your lower dantian,

And do this nine times so you can fill yourself with this yin energy of the moon.

Some advice in Taoist meditation is called replace a thousand thoughts with one.

All these extraneous thoughts and feelings and desires and fears all start coalescing into just one pure yin energy like a full moon,

Like a beautiful round yellow or white full moon,

So that you are filled with relaxation and a feeling of being very centered in the very center of your own being and connected with the source of all,

Tao.

When finished rub your palms together 36 times and and place them over your eyes inhaling the warmth the chi from your lao gong or palm points into behind your eyes into your brain into your whole being and then rub your palms gently up and down your face three times and then gently re-enter the world
