Howard Thurman,
Theologian,
Educator,
And civil rights leader,
Wrote about this concept of an inward sea in his collections of meditations and prayers called Meditations of the Heart.
This excerpt reads,
There is in every person an inward sea,
And in that sea there is an island,
And on that island there is an altar,
And standing guard before that altar is the angel with the flaming sword.
Nothing can get by that angel to be placed upon the altar unless it has the mark of your inner authority.
Nothing passes the angel with the flaming sword to be placed upon your altar unless it to be a part of the fluid area of your consent.
This is your crucial link with the eternal.
Navigating this inward sea that Thurman wrote about needs our direction,
Steadied by opportunities to reflect and explore our true self in order to make it to this island of peace.
In this deep relaxation soundbath practice,
We will explore this experience and connect with the island that is home to peace,
Personal power,
And purpose.
Connecting to this space in practice allows us to embody the strength and resilience to exist fully in the world.
Prepare to come to a comfortable resting position,
One that you can rest in for at least 25 to 30 minutes with little to no movement.
Take a few moments to settle into this space.
Make sure that the body is comfortable and supported by any props,
Pillows,
Or any additional comfortable items that you need in this practice.
Gently blink the eyes closed if that feels comfortable for this experience.
Otherwise soften or lower the gaze.
And gently allow stillness to wash over the body.
We will start by lifting up with the About any gentle body scan with each point identified on the body,
Allowing that to be a point to introduce or welcome a gentle softening or rest into the body,
Bringing that awareness to the soles of the feet,
Gently softening awareness to the 10 toes,
To the ankles,
To the shins,
Gently softening into the space,
Allowing the body to rest in stillness,
Awareness gently at the knees,
The hips,
The base of the spine and the lower back,
Gently softening into these spaces,
Awareness moving gently to the abdomen,
The belly,
The navel,
Gently softening,
Awareness at the center of the chest,
Softening,
Moving that awareness gently to the tips of the 10 fingers,
The palms of the hands,
The wrists,
Awareness gently in the elbows,
The shoulder joints,
The hollow of the neck,
Allowing that sensation of rest to gently wash across the body,
That awareness moving to the face,
Bringing that sense of rest into the intricacies of our face,
Softening gently in the jaw,
Releasing the tongue from the roof of the mouth,
Softening in the cheeks,
The temples,
Softening gently around the brow,
Allowing the eyes to rest a little more gently in the eye sockets,
Even softening at the crown of the head,
The entire body,
The sense of rest,
Relaxation just washing across the body like a gentle wave,
With the body rested,
We'll turn our attention and awareness towards the breath,
Just noticing the rhythm and flow of the breath,
Allow yourself to invite in four or five cleansing breaths,
Using these breaths as opportunities to ground deeper in our body,
Gently inhaling in through the nose,
Filling the belly expand,
And audibly exhaling out of the mouth,
Releasing anything that's not in service to you or the practice at this moment,
Allow yourself to invite in four cleansing breaths at your own pace.
You can gently seal the lips and allow the breath to flow gently through the nostrils,
Inhaling in through the nostrils,
Allowing the exhale to flow through the nostrils,
Allowing the breath to become effortless,
Just allow yourself to begin to visualize resting on the waves of the sea,
Noticing the protective healing and purifying energy of the water,
The formlessness and effortlessness of the waves,
The soundscape will slowly begin to integrate into the practice,
Creating room for deep rest,
Centering and reconnection,
And as you rest in the practice,
Allow yourself to feel present and whole on this island of peace in the center of the North Pole andLES WATER POTENTIAL You.
