We have a dream, vision or wish on our hearts. When we work by ourselves, it can feel as if the dream may not come true. When we connect, however, with Spirit, with the energy of the Mystery, we work together as a team to weave that web of dreams to life. Grandmother Spider, in many Indigenous traditions, is considered to be the web weaver of creation itself. In this guided practice we will connect with Grandmother Spider, call in the dreams and wishes on our hearts and sing them to life.

Hi,

I'm Shannon and grateful to have you here for our practice and time together today.

Today we will be spending time with the energy of weaving a web of blessings for ourselves and our intentions,

Our creative spirit self.

To connect with this part of ourselves,

We'll be calling in the energy of Grandmother Spider.

In the indigenous traditions,

Grandmother Spider is known as the weaver of the universe.

She brought into existence life where there was none before by weaving her web of creation and light.

If we imagine that our life is a circle,

That we ourselves can create our life around us,

Then we also become this weaver of that web of creation for ourselves.

We will be joining the energy of Grandmother Spider with our own energy in order to activate and bring into life those things in our life that we're wishing to create.

What I'd like to do today is first share a Grandmother Spider indigenous story with you,

Then we will move into a time of setting those creative intentions for ourselves.

Then to bless those intentions,

I'll be sharing a women's folk song,

And then we'll close with a poem honoring the energy of Grandmother Spirit.

I hope you enjoy your time today with Grandmother Spider and with myself.

To lay the foundation for our time together today,

I'd like to share this story with you called Grandmother Spider.

It's by the author Paula Gunn Allen from her book Grandmothers of the Light,

Oma'o,

Long ago.

The spider was in the place where only she was.

There was no light or dark.

There was no warm wind,

No rain or thunder.

She was a great wise woman whose powers are beyond imagining.

No medicine person,

No conjurer or shaman,

No witch or sorcerer,

No scientist or inventor can imagine how great her power was.

Her power is so complete and total.

It is pure and cleaner than the void.

It is the power of thought,

We say,

But not the kind of thought people do all the time.

It's like the power of dream,

But more pure,

Like the spirit of vision.

It has not shape or movement,

Because it just is.

It is the power that creates all that is.

In that place where she was alone and complete with her power,

She thought about this and how it sang to her,

How she dreamed from it,

How she wished to have someone to share that song dream with her.

Not because she was lonely,

But because the power's song was so complete,

She wished for there to be others who could also know it,

For she and her power together were of one mind.

So she thought to the power once and knew a rippling,

A wrinkling within.

Then she knew that she was old and wrinkled and that the power's first song was a song of great age.

The wrinkling became tighter,

More spidery,

And stronger.

It became in one place.

She named this place Northwest.

She knew the wrinkling had folded up on top of itself.

She knew much of the universe the great power was contained within.

Later,

The earth would be ripples and wrinkles and spidery lines of power folded and enfolded in tight,

Moving shapes.

It would also hold the great power within,

Like a mother holds new life.

Others would also imitate this time.

Walnuts and acorns,

Apples and pineapples,

Cacti and mountains,

Even the oceans would be like this.

And humans,

Five fingered beings,

Would grow wrinkled in their skin and brains in honor of this time when she and the power made a song to form new life.

She was so happy with what she knew,

So full of awe at the beauty of the song that she thought again.

And again she knew the rippling and wrinkling,

The running of spidery lines along the edges of forming pouch of the power song,

The folding and enfolding into a shape that held more of this power within.

She knew that the place that the pouch,

The bundle of her thought,

Her song was in the Northeast.

So humming and singing,

She shaped them.

That was how the directions came into being,

How the seasons came to be.

She thought in her power to each of the bundles and continued to sing.

She sang the power was,

The power that is everywhere,

That has no name or body,

But is just the mystery.

She sang and the bundles began to move.

They began to sing,

To echo each song to join together.

They sang their hearts song,

That was the same as spider's heart song,

That was the heart of the great mystery.

The song seemed to deepen as she heard others hearts singing too.

It became stronger.

The two who rose from the bundle with their singing each had a bundle of their own,

And each of these bundles the life of the universe rested,

Waiting to be sung into life.

Spider named each of these beings,

One she named Iksitsi and the other she named Natwatsi.

They did not have physical bodies,

They were much vaster even than a planet or a star.

Spider told each of these beings that they were to make more so that the song could go on and on,

So that the beauty of these beings be brought to life.

She told them that they would take from their pouches a part of the song and would sing it into fullness.

They would need to sing the mystery in the way of thought to bring the lives of their own bundles into being.

They understood her directions because they were the song of the mystery itself,

All of it,

And only a small piece of it.

Iksitsi began to sing a new chant,

Wey-ah-hiyo,

Wey-ah-hiyo,

Wey-ah-hiyo.

She sang and sang,

Thinking to her bundle,

And around them as the song swirled,

Whirling globes of light began to form.

They began pushing outward in great,

Whirling spirals,

A wheel,

All singing as they circled and wheeled like great geese upon the wind.

As they spiraled outward,

They grew larger and brighter,

Around and around the still invisible center,

Where Spider,

Iksitsi,

And Ahwazi sang.

The outer ones in the circle flung themselves farther from the center,

Great arms forming,

The spiral dance singing,

Following the lines of the song,

Reaching farther and farther out into the mystery.

The fingers making the darkness of light as they dance,

Finding the power to come out of the darkness and bringing in the light.

The power danced in the void,

The light the midnight reached gleaming,

Dark it sang.

Then Ahwazi began to sing her thought to her bundle,

Omi-hum,

Hum,

Hum,

Omi-hum,

Hum,

Hum,

Omi-oh,

Oh,

Oh,

Omi-oh,

Oh,

Oh,

Omi-oh.

The song changed again as Spider,

Iksitsi,

Joined her song from the brilliant globes of light.

New shapes spun out,

Dancing around and around the light,

Giving shape and solidity to the darkness.

The planets sang,

New beings awakened,

Joining their heart song.

Satisfied with their work,

Spider turned to her granddaughters and smiled as she chanted.

Now if we imagine that this spirit of creation,

That ability to create from the web of life that Grandmother Spider creates,

We also have that same ability to do this in our own lives,

Bringing that song of Grandmother Spider into our hearts and then weaving our own lives with this same spirit and mystery that lives inside of us.

It is my intention then for us to now call in those intentions,

Creative ideas,

Or blessings that we are wanting to weave together into our lives.

I'll have us move into a space where we call in those intentions to be held within our hearts.

I'll have you move into a space of calling in that intention by being either seated or lying down,

Whatever feels best for you.

As you move into this space,

I'll give you that time to do this now,

And then we will set the intentions that are on your heart.

Now from this place,

I'll have you take a deep breath in,

And exhale.

With each gentle breath that you take now,

Bringing in the energy around you.

If you feel scattered,

Allowing yourself to come into a centered space within yourself,

Connecting with the earth beneath you,

Connecting with the trees,

The flowers,

Plants,

The animals.

Inhaling and exhaling,

Allowing your body to begin to mirror the rhythm and heartbeat of the mother earth beneath you.

From this space of connection,

I'll have you close your eyes.

Now with intention,

I'll have you bring your hands out into a cupped position.

If you're sitting down,

I'll have you bring your hands into a cupped position in front of your tummy.

If you're laying down,

I'll have you open up your hands upwards on either side of yourself.

Now from this place of intention,

With your hands open and cupping the light of energy around you,

I'll have you begin to imagine that you yourself are connecting with the energy of Grandmother Spider,

The energy of creation and creativity.

Imagining that a beautiful web of light is forming around you.

What would you like to weave or call into your web of light?

Your world,

Your life.

I'll have you breathe into your heart and see what intentions,

Dreams,

Wishes that you'd like to bring into life,

Into your world.

Allow yourself to see,

Feel,

And hear these things on your heart that you would like to create.

In this next moment of silence,

From this space of listening to your heart and calling in those intentions,

Dreams,

Or blessings,

Allow yourself to continue to hold these in your hands.

Now imagine that Grandmother Spider is weaving that web of light from your own energy around you,

Being able to create this web that allows those wishes that are of your highest good into life.

As you hold these blessings of light that wish to be born,

As Grandmother Spider works her web of light around you,

I'll have you gather in these wishes and hold them in your hands.

As you hold your wishes and that web of light continues to be spun,

We will move into a space where we bless these wishes on your heart with a song that will call these dreams and wishes of your heart into creation in your world.

Allow yourself to be surrounded by the words of this song.

The song of light that I share with you now to bless those wishes on your heart was created by Lynn Batson who brought this song to life.

Allow yourself to receive the blessings that will help call into life your own wishes and dreams.

Receive this energy now.

May the web of your life be created in beauty.

May the blessings,

Wishes,

And dreams on your heart be protected.

I'd like to close this time together with a poem by Paula Gunn-Allen called Grandmother.

Out of her own body she pushed silver thread,

Light,

Air,

And carried it carefully on the dark flying where nothing moved.

Out of her body she extruded shining wire,

Life,

And wove the light on the void.

From beyond time,

Beyond oak trees and bright clear water,

It flows.

She was given the work of weaving these strands of her body,

Her pain,

Her vision into creation and the gift of having created to disappear.

After her,

The women and the men weave blankets into tales of life,

Memories of light and ladders,

Infinity eyes,

And rain.

After her,

I sit on my laddered,

Rain-bearing rug and mend the tear with a string.

Take a deep breath in and exhale.

Thank you so much for joining me and Grandmother Spider today for these blessings of light.

May you continue to weave these blessings into your own web of light.

May you create a world where your dreams come true.

Have a beautiful day.

Namaste.
