If you were handling dangerous equipment, you would be mindful, present and careful. But with our speech, we throw out words like we throw out the trash, without a look back of concern for the impact--and harm--they can cause to others and ourselves. You can use your words for connection or for separation; to bolster someone up or to put them down. How are you going to choose your words? This dharma talk is about becoming more mindful of the power of your speech.

If you were to handle heavy machinery like a chainsaw or a jackhammer you would definitely want to be prepared.

You would want to know the manual how it worked.

You would make sure you were strong enough.

You're not picking up this 50 pound jackhammer that's gonna be blasting up and down you know unless you know that you can hold it as it starts going that you're not gonna like chop off your foot and bust pipes in the ground right?

That seems obvious but with speech we seem to think that oh there's no rules I just open my mouth and let whatever spills out come out and that's good like we don't always prepare.

We don't always realize the danger of a word.

My sister met a friend that she knew from way back say from school and she go and somehow it got talking that that friend went to a school where a person I know shall we say taught and he said oh do you know that person and the kid go it kind of had a face like something reacted he goes oh yeah yeah I know that person she goes well what you can tell me it's okay and the kid said when I was in third grade I remember her scolding this third grader you know with such condescension and such you know and that stuck with me to this day and he might have been a senior in college.

The power of the word can be more powerful than a sword than a jackhammer and yet we wield it with no concern no worries no control.

What would happen if your words were spoken with the same awareness that you would have holding a jackhammer?

The same concerns for safety not just for yourself but for others.

If you filtered it not just through your passions not just through your will and willpower the goal wasn't just to conquer but the goal was to let it go through your heart through your throat and then release.

How would your life be?

How would your communication be?

Would it be about winning or connecting?

Would it be about sharing not just information but union?

Bring your hands to the heart center.

Remind yourself of this beautiful heart center where everything filters through it from garbage to flower tops becomes a fragrance like perfume.

Sharing one final Aum.

Inhale.

Aum.

Namaste.

Thank you! Yes, wielding our words is as important as doing an action :)
