The past is a memory. The future is imagination. The only reality is the present. This is a talk at the end of a yoga class I taught with the theme of "Expectations." It contains real-world examples of how we fall out of the Now and ends with a meditative reflection. I hope this helps you stay in the Present.

What were your expectations of this yoga class and were they fulfilled?

Were you satisfied or disappointed?

I came in not expecting for myself that I was going to do this second half of class a lot of just holding postures,

You know,

For that long.

But I'm like,

Game,

I have no horse in the race.

So I'm like,

Cool,

This is what came through or this is what,

You know,

Seems to go and I was into it,

You know,

But might not be your expectation.

You know,

They say there's only the present that the past is memory,

The future is,

You know,

Imagination,

The only reality is the present.

But our expectations,

What are they?

Where do they belong?

They're an imagination for the future.

They're how it should be.

And then after the present,

The only real time is not what our imagination was,

We hold on,

We still hold on to it.

It's a past now it's past and we still hold on to our disappointment.

That's not how it that's not what I envisioned.

And I'm a master manifest or what is wrong?

You know,

So I've been shooting I'm working on my own signature program,

Which has yoga,

Meditation,

Herbal medicine,

Nonviolent communication,

Cleansing,

You know,

All this stuff.

And we were filming at the studio at the urban souls.

And we have two cameras,

One's mine,

One's this other guy and my camera right from the start wasn't working,

You know,

And I was like,

We already shot like,

You know,

We're gonna bunch of these like if there's eight sequences,

We shot like five of them already and Mike and I was like,

And there's a certain point I kept,

You know,

Praying all my gods,

The God of yoga,

Please make this work.

And finally,

I just said,

We realized like,

You got to go with what is now I had my expectations,

I had my hopes,

But that's not a reality.

So what am I going to do?

I'm going to bitch about it forever?

Or am I going to deal with what is,

You know,

You know,

I have my ideas and expectations and hopes,

I would like it to be perfect,

You know,

But that's not the way the world works.

And I think there's a lot of lessons in the unpredictable and things that don't happen the way you expected or hope it will,

That are probably more valuable for you than if it just happened according to plan.

You know,

Think about a relationship,

A breakup and you're like at the time you're like,

Oh,

Woe is me sometimes or maybe you're like good riddance.

But in the future,

Maybe you meet someone else and you're like,

Wow,

Thank God,

I'm not with that person anymore.

That would have prevented me from this more positive relationship.

Bring your hands to the heart center.

Reflect for a moment of what you expect your day is going to be like today.

And let's have the courage to drop that expectation,

To say and accept I will take whatever life brings me and I will cherish it for another opportunity to learn and grow.

Sharing one final Aum in hell.

Aum.

Namaste.
