Hi,

I'm Adam and I help people remember to meditate.

And I'd like to thank you for joining me as I share a few of the techniques that I use to connect with myself so that the best version of me shows up for my family and friends and so that I can serve the community and my clients at the highest possible levels.

Now there's a thousand ways to meditate and a million reasons why.

Whatever your reason is,

I'm here to make it fun so that you'll stick with it.

And people often ask me,

What's fun about meditation?

And across the board they tend to agree that learning about brainwave science is actually a lot of fun.

So one of the ways that scientists measure brainwaves is in frequency.

And the five major brainwave frequency categories are beta,

Alpha,

Theta,

Delta,

And gamma.

And what I'd like to do is walk you through a few of the telltale signs so you'll know which of these frequencies you're even dealing with.

Let's start with beta.

There's actually two modes.

If you listen to the tone of my voice and the way that I move my body,

I'm in your normal,

Run-of-the-mill,

Everyday beta brainwave state.

But there's also this high anxiety state we get into like,

Oh,

If I've overslept and missed the bus and now I got to call an Uber but it says it's nine minutes away,

What if I call and say I'm stuck in traffic?

They'll know I'm lying.

If you've got to calm down or if you're with somebody like you should calm down,

Then chances are you're dealing with a high beta brainwave.

And they're actually pretty easy to manage.

All you've got to do is bring the shoulders up to the ears and let out a deep sigh.

Let's do this together.

And the more that you commit to the relaxation in that ah,

Like a fresh glass of lemonade,

The faster you'll be able to get rid of that frenzy and return to normal.

And this is what we call a state change.

And changing your state is a choice that's always available to you no matter what the conditions are.

Let's say you're about to fire off that angry email.

Ah,

Just a few shoulder shrugs and you'll be able to unhook and let go and return to a normal grounded composed beta brainwave state.

And normal beta brainwaves are actually multitasking mode.

It's how you do all the things.

But when you need to switch to a single focus and get one thing done,

Then you need to change your state to the second brainwave frequency of alpha.

Let's say you're hammering away at some clever social media clap back and somebody walks up and you're like,

I can't talk right now.

Then chances are you're in alpha because that's your single focus,

Task oriented,

Get things done mode.

And on average we spend about two thirds of the day in beta and alpha.

But we spend the other third of the day in theta and delta.

The third brainwave frequency is theta.

It's that in between phase as you're drifting off to sleep and when you're waking back up.

Have you ever heard the phrase,

How you go to sleep is how you wake up?

Well,

Think about it.

Have you ever woken up pissed off like the first thought to hit your brain is something super irritating that you've got to go deal with?

Well,

That means your subconscious has been wrestling with that all night.

No wonder people wake up feeling like they haven't slept at all.

That's why we practice cultivating a nourishing theta brainwave,

Which goes hand in hand with the fourth frequency of delta.

Delta is actually the healing mode.

If you catch a paper cut at work,

Does it not heal and repair itself overnight?

Healing mode works a lot better when you've actually slept deep enough to generate a delta brainwave.

So cultivating a nourishing theta and going into a deep delta sleep will actually have you waking up feeling nourished,

Rejuvenated and refreshed.

The fifth brainwave frequency is gamma.

And all I can tell you about this for now is that expert meditators have been cultivating gamma frequencies to unlock the mysteries of the universe.

But that's a story for another day.

So if you're ready to take this for a spin and practice changing state from multifocus beta to single focus alpha,

Then head on over to the next video and let's do this together.
