Good Luck or Bad Luck?

A Lesson on Judgment There's an ancient story about a young man who one day,

While exploring the forest,

Found a beautiful horse that seemingly belonged to no one.

He rode his newfound treasure back to his village to show to all of his fellow villagers.

What good luck?

The villagers exclaimed.

In that village there was a wise man to whom the story was told of the young man's good luck.

The wise man responded,

Maybe so,

Maybe not.

The villagers were all shocked at his inability to see what was obviously good luck.

A few days later,

When the young man was working with and riding his new horse,

He fell from it and broke his leg.

As a result,

He could not only not ride his horse,

But he could not work.

What bad luck?

The villagers lamented.

When the villagers told the wise man of the bad incident and of this young man's bad luck,

Once again,

The wise man responded,

Maybe so,

Maybe not.

The villagers were quite upset with the wise man that he could not see what was obviously bad luck.

Many began to question if he was a wise man at all.

Sometime later,

Members of the military came to that town to conscript all the able-bodied young men into the military as that country was at war.

All the young men were taken except the young man with the broken leg.

As a result of the war,

Many of those young men would not return home.

Good luck or bad luck?

The moral of the story is that we mortals are not good judges of those things that happen to us as to if they are good or bad.

Out of our incomplete and imperfect knowledge,

We make judgments about what is good and what is bad.

The Apostle Paul in the New Testament book of 1 Corinthians put it this way,

What we currently see and understand is like looking into a faulty or distorted mirror that gives us just that,

A distorted view.

We can only see and understand in part.

But one day we will understand even as we now are understood.

In the meantime,

Perhaps we would be well served to hold our judgments on the things that happen to us.

Perhaps our view is too limited to know the good from the bad.

Questions for reflection.

Can you think of a time in your life when something happened that you thought was bad that turned out to be good?

What can you do to turn your,

Quote,

Bad luck to good?
