How Hypnotherapy Works
In this talk, hypnotherapist Rahel Papel discusses what hypnosis is and how it works. Hypnosis is a natural, familiar, and relaxed state of concentration. The breathing becomes more regular and slows down. The heart rate and blood pressure also decrease. This condition we know from pranayama, a breathing technique and meditation state in yoga. With hypnotherapy, we are able to reprogram old belief patterns and habits (e.g., anxiety and smoking). Hypnosis is a wonderful, non-willful condition, untroubled and easy. Sleep or fainting has nothing to do with it.

Can you make me bark like a dog or eat a whole lemon or an whole onion?
That's a question that I hear every time when I say that I do hypnotherapy.
So people always think this is a state of unconsciousness and not knowing what they're doing or what to believe or being numb.
And in this episode I want to explain how hypnotherapy,
What it is and how it actually works.
Let me first get the first myth when it comes to sleep.
Hypnos comes from the ancient Greek and means sleep.
That's why everybody knows what to do when somebody says sleep.
You just close your eyes and relax.
And that's actually the whole thing about the word hypnosis.
It's a deep relaxation and you're actually aware 200 to 300 times more of awareness because you only need to concentrate on the voice of the hypnotherapist that is your auditive sense.
And that's all of it that you're actually doing while you're in hypnotherapy.
And why people have the feeling of being unconscious in this moment or we're actually unconscious on a daily basis is because we just have 80% of actions that we do unconscious or habits that we do unconscious.
So I'm sure you know this experience as well.
When you go out of the house,
You lock it,
You step out and then after a few meters you don't even know if you locked the door.
And that's an unconscious action that you are actually in a hypnotic state.
And so hypnotherapy is nowadays,
I call it actually meditation,
Guided meditation,
Yoga nidra or whatever has to do with relaxation and listening to a voice that could also be a podcast is nothing else than kind of a state of hypnotherapy.
But of course there are different states of hypnotherapy.
So I would say the deeper you get,
The more the hypnotherapist says you go deeper and deeper and deeper and deeper you're getting more tired.
That's because people know what to do then.
You get into a state where you're just full relaxed that your body is getting sort of numb,
That the body is able to not feel pain anymore.
And so a lot of operations or hypnobirthing or even dental removal is happening nowadays with hypnosis,
Which is an awesome thing because you don't need any painkillers anymore.
Well,
Maybe you need painkillers after them,
But then the whole anesthesia can fall away.
So that's like the awesome thing that is happening nowadays that people are more open to try hypnotherapy.
And then of course I get the question,
Are you able to hypnotize anybody on this world?
And then I say,
Well,
People who want to get hypnotized,
They can be hypnotized.
So everybody who is open to go in a deeper relaxation,
Just let it flow and listen to my voice and do what I say is actually not a problem to hypnotize.
But of course people who say,
I don't want to be hypnotized,
I don't want to be in that state,
I don't trust it,
Then of course it wouldn't work.
There are people who are more open to it than others.
So sometimes it depends what jobs people have or how minded,
How much they are in their brain to let themselves go and get into deep relaxation.
So I mean,
People who meditate on a regular basis or know how to go automatic in this relaxation state are very easy to hypnotize because they actually know what to do.
And other people who are more questioning and being in their brain,
A mathematical kind of state,
Then of course they are very much in their head of asking themselves what is going to happen here,
What is not going to happen.
And so they can be more difficult to get into this state because they just are so stuck in bed in their brain.
But it's fine.
So as soon as you just say,
Okay,
Relax your body,
Just listen to my voice,
We're going to do a trip,
Then most of them are already in the movie because our body or our brain works with a lot of pictures.
So as soon as I say like now,
Think of a hill with a tree,
You actually have a picture already.
And hypnotherapy is actually just going through a story that has a start and an end.
And that's the whole process about it.
So let me get to a little history of hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy exists since forever.
I think one of the oldest professions ever.
And the one I learned is hypnotherapy regression to cause.
So you actually go to the cause back of where the trigger started of this problem.
This can be anything.
And so this guy,
His name is called Jerry Kine.
He was born in the US and lived in the US and he has now built the school worldwide,
Which is amazing,
Together with Hans Rodiwib,
Who was my teacher,
And he will be on the show as well,
I hope,
One day.
And so there are three levels of minds that I want to go into.
So you need to like take a circle,
Take another inner circle and another circle.
So you actually have three circles from an inside out.
And if we go into the most inner circle,
That is our unconscious mind.
And so in there is our immune system,
Digestion,
Automatic body functions.
So we don't need to concentrate of if our heart beats or our digestion works or how we need to breathe.
We can influence it of course,
If we want to.
Let's say if I hold my breath,
Which is not healthy,
I can influence it for maybe one or two minutes,
Not even.
So it's not healthy,
But it actually works just like that automatically.
And then when you zoom out,
We go into the second circle,
We have our subconscious mind.
And in there,
There is the real me,
Because this is our long term memory.
And in our long term memory,
Everything is stored 100%,
But the thing we can maybe recapture is two to three percent.
Well,
I don't know,
And not every day of my school,
School days that I've ever had,
But our long term memory knows actually everything of that.
So if I ask you,
Do you remember your first day of school?
Maybe of our listeners,
80% can,
Maybe 20% know.
But if I say,
Do you remember one day of school?
So everybody at least knows one day of school or remembers one day of school.
So in there,
In our subconscious mind,
We also have our emotions,
Every feeling,
Everything that we associate with anything that we went through in our life until now.
And we also have our habits.
So everything what is habit of,
I don't know,
Locking the door again,
Or getting up in the morning or brushing our teeth or combing our hair or going for a shower or going routinely to work is in there.
So everything what we just do on a regular basis is our habit.
And also what's in there is our self protection.
So I'm not really a fan of spiders.
And if somebody throws me a rubber spider,
Then my alarm system goes alarm,
Red,
Run,
Fight or flight.
And that's the thing.
So once we had a negative experience with a spider like me,
And I actually know it's a rubber spider,
My system still knows,
Okay,
It is a rubber spider,
But it is a spider.
So we are not able to differentiate between real and wrong,
Or real or fake.
So even fake news is sometimes a thing,
Like jokes.
So if you're a kid,
You sometimes don't get jokes because you just don't know this experience or don't know the words or the context of the older you get,
Then you actually get jokes.
So you can actually see,
Oh,
This is a joke and this is not a joke.
And if we zoom out again,
We have our conscious mind,
And there is our short term memory.
And this is the wrong me that actually is just conditioned to what we went through in our life and develops in our personality.
And in there is also our willpower when we say,
Okay,
Let's do this adventure,
This trip,
Then we are full of power and say,
Yes,
Let's do it.
But also we are very rational and analytic because everything is like on the conscious mind and just being very surface wise.
And so what happens in hypnotherapy is that we have in our conscious mind,
We still have a critical factor,
Which I call the Mr.
Doorman.
So if you want to go in a club,
Which is our subconscious mind,
You have to pass by a door guy,
Which says,
Well,
Why do you want to get in here?
And why do you want to change this habit if it's quitting of smoking or if it's being happy when people are depressed,
Why you should be happy now?
So every kind of negative habit,
What we have or what we do or what we want to change sometime has something positive.
So if somebody wants to quit smoking,
Which is really a bad thing,
We all know,
Then the door guy goes like,
Well,
Why do you want to quit smoking?
Because you always had this routine,
You were always able to take breaks,
You always had a chat with the woman at the kiosk,
You would always find friends when you're looking for a lighter.
And so what is happening is we need to go past this door guy.
And that's actually hypnotherapy,
Where we just go around or sneak around a door guy to get in the club in our subconscious mind.
And that's the clue about hypnotherapy or also the method that I use is kinesiology,
Where it's with the muscle testing.
So it actually goes over or behind your rational and analytic conscious mind to get into the club to your long term memory and your subconscious mind.
That's the whole clue about it.
And I actually love to even explain this right here right now.
So let's go into my topic,
Into my own topic that I used to live as a kid.
So I used to be this kid who used to be at visitors and look into their drawers.
And I think I would still do it nowadays when I would know that it's not a good thing.
But I still would do it.
So today I do this as a profession.
So let me explain.
Imagine you have every single moment or situation or feeling you would have in a drawer,
Your life drawers.
These will be endless,
Right?
And in some drawers,
There are positive emotions or positive situations or adventures and all of those moments.
And then you have the bad moments.
I don't know,
Like I have some of presenting in front of my friends or crying in a bathroom or what else?
There are so many I don't even remember.
So in the end,
What I actually do now is I go and look for the drawers with my clients.
And so normally they come and they have this problem and then you have to look for the trigger of what actually caused this problem.
So I actually go and look for the drawer that has this trigger in it.
And so sometimes you get to one drawer,
Then you get to the other drawer,
But it's actually going to look for the find the first drawer that ever had this feeling in it.
So what do I do with this drawer when I found it?
This drawer is normally traumatic or has a negative touch to it.
So you actually go into as a perspective of what was missing or what weren't you able to say or to do or is there anger or fear?
And you actually go and neutralize the situation.
And that's what makes it not a bad drawer anymore,
But a neutral drawer.
And it's all about that you have a neutral drawer and not a bad drawer anymore.
What also belongs to these drawers are sabotages.
Sabotages can be by yourself of beliefs and idealism,
But also our family has inner convictions and beliefs.
I mean,
I remember tons of my family like don't ever do this and that,
Don't ever be the loud one,
Don't ever try to do this,
Don't ever take that.
So a lot is from our family,
Of course,
And of course also systemic or collective,
Social and also projections by others.
So I remember when I said,
Oh,
I'm going to be self-employed.
Most of my friends or family was like,
Are you sure?
You're never going to make it and it's so scary.
And I thought to myself,
Is it my fear or is it your fear?
And that is something to reflect on what is mine and what is theirs or what have I got from others that is actually not mine.
And another point that can be a sabotage as well is psychic.
So everything,
What is traditions,
Religion,
Also spirituality when you're always want to optimize yourself and then not being able to accept yourself in the end.
And yeah,
That is the whole story I wanted to say about hypnotherapy that you have a short insight of how it's actually built up and how you're going to work if you're ever interested of working with a hypnotherapist.
I think it's an awesome tool and you can do it nowadays in person.
You can do it over Skype.
I just love the fact that hypnotherapy,
You're able to do it by yourself,
Whatever is a guided meditation,
Or you do it in person with a hypnotherapist who actually can get deeper into your subconscious mind of reprogramming and neutralizing the moments that were a trigger for you.
And of course,
The better you know your own drawers,
The better you're able to break your habits,
Your negative habits or change the pattern that you no longer want to have.
So thank you for listening to this and sharing is caring.
Take care.
Bye.
