Called by the Medicine Buddha, I have created this guided meditation to offer support for those dealing with Parkinson's Disease, although I have not had clients with PD. At my age, I am beginning to notice some of my friends my age are facing this challenge. My heart goes out to them. I hope the program helps. It first relaxes your body and mind. It then has a part of you review growing up and learning to walk and coordinate movement. It demonstrates how your body remembers its responses to past stimuli, shares a learning metaphor, sets healing goals, and cues your natural healing responses. Listen often with an open mind, with as much of your imagination as you can. Not a replacement for medical care. Image thanks to Cottonbro at Pexels. Background music, thanks to Christopher Lloyd Clarke.

This guided meditation is adjunctive support for people with Parkinson's disease and dopamine deficiency movement disorders.

Find a place where you can lie down alone for about 25 minutes.

Put on earbuds,

Close your eyes,

And listen.

Use all the imagination you can muster as you follow the creative visualization directions.

It has been found that 40 to 60 minutes of meditation can increase your dopamine levels by 65%.

So,

Just lie back and enjoy.

When you're ready,

Start the program.

Now,

Lying down with your eyes closed,

Let's relax your body first and then your mind.

Behind your eyelids,

Roll your eyes upward towards the middle of your forehead.

Relax your eyelids and all the muscles around your eyes.

Relax them,

Relax them more until they're so relaxed they don't feel like opening.

Try them.

And when they are so relaxed that they are reluctant to open,

Breathe in and gather that relaxation.

Breathe out and send it like a wave down through your whole body and out through your toes,

Feeling wonderful all the way down and out.

Now,

Notice the degree of relaxation you are having in your body,

In your face,

And around your eyes.

Double the relaxation around your eyes.

Loosen those muscles.

Let those muscles loosen until your eyelids are so relaxed that they don't work anymore.

They are glued shut.

Try them.

And when you're sure they're shut tight and unwilling to open,

Breathe in,

Gather that double relaxation you have there,

And then breathe out,

Sending it again like a wave down through your body,

Your stomach,

Your thighs,

Your knees,

Calves,

And out your feet.

Your whole body is totally relaxed.

Now,

Let's relax the mind.

Count backwards from 100 towards 1 in threes until it becomes too much trouble to continue.

When you don't feel like going on,

Allow yourself just to give up and relax into a deep meditative state.

That's where you want to be anyway.

I will start you off.

Let's count together 100,

97,

94.

Continue counting backwards until you have relaxed all those numbers out of your mind.

Count 91.

Relax.

98.

Relax.

Double relax until they're gone now.

Enjoy this special meditative state.

It's your special place.

Become familiar with it,

How it feels.

Each time you hear my voice,

You can easily and quickly return here.

Now,

Imagine the surface that you're lying on,

Beginning to lift off the floor and float safely,

Steadily upwards into the airspace,

About four or five feet off the floor,

Until you get a little spacey feeling.

While you are floating there in the middle of nowhere,

Consciously listening to the sound of my voice and the background music,

Your unconscious mind can float on the wings of time to when you were a child at around six months old.

This will be at the unconscious level,

So you will barely have a conscious memory of it.

Just know that somewhere deep inside of you,

You can allow your unconscious mind to start moving from the time you're six months old all the way through the time you are four years old.

And as it moves through the years,

Months,

It can review your life at a speed in which weeks and months can pass by in just a few seconds.

And as you do this at the unconscious level,

Beneath the surface of awareness,

Your mind-body can re-experience learning how to grasp things,

How you grasp things as a very young child.

A couple of months later,

How you held to the furniture as you walked.

And later,

How to hold things between your thumb and your forefinger and take steps,

Independent steps,

So you can walk independently,

Hey,

Without holding to the furniture.

And later,

How to point and turn pages of a book and walk steadily.

And later,

How to stack blocks and scribble,

Run and climb.

And later,

How to draw shapes,

Use scissors and dress yourself.

As a part of you reviews and relives each of these developments at the unconscious level,

Your body can absorb the experiences as you pass through them and can bring them forward with you to the present.

Allow that to happen.

Now,

You might find it amusing to know that your body remembers its responses to stimuli and past stimuli.

After all,

According to the Buddha,

Every movement,

That means every response,

Begins with a thought.

For example,

You might be pleasantly surprised to feel goosebumps arise on your arms when you remember a time someone put an ice cube down the back of your shirt,

Right?

Or you might be surprised to find out how each of your nostrils responds when you imagine smelling something like a rose or some rotten meat.

Or surprised to find out what happens to the inside of your mouth when you remember taking a drink of lemonade.

Lemonade that someone forgot to add sugar to.

And you may notice how still your body becomes when you imagine one time getting ready to swat the mosquito.

Or silently turn a doorknob and open a door that you don't want people to hear.

Remembering these experiences elicits an automatic response.

If you understand that,

Then you can understand that the activators,

Dopamine 1,

And the inhibitors,

Dopamine 2,

Are produced and exchanged cell-to-cell through little fingers reaching toward each other,

Starting in a small central area of your brain,

Located between your ears and between your nose and the back of your head.

It's located just where your spine meets your brain so that its messages can instantly be sent up and down your spinal cord to the rest of your body.

Sometimes the dopamine can be depleted due to too much stress or overwork,

Making you feel down and awkward.

At this time you often drop things or break things.

And Parkinson's is an interruption in the amount of dopamine available and an interruption in its flow to the dopamine 1 and 2 receptors.

You can always increase your dopamine by listening to music,

Meditating,

Or listening to this audio program.

And you can also allow your body to remember its reactions to the dopamine messages,

The ones that the dopamine had previously sent out in the past.

And they can act accordingly,

Just like your nostrils remembering those smells.

Now let that information sink in,

Go deeply in,

As we go a little deeper into a meditative state.

Breathe in,

Hold it,

And then breathe out and relax as I count from 5 to 1.

5,

Drifting down,

4,

Deeper down,

3.

Breathe in again,

Double that relaxation.

Breathe in again and breathe out as I count from 5 to 1.

5,

Drifting down,

4,

Double down,

3.

Relax more and more,

2 and 1.

Now allow yourself to go into the very basement of relaxation.

Breathe in and relax yourself as you breathe out as I count down from 10 to 1.

10,

Floating down,

9,

Deeper down,

8,

More and more relaxed,

7,

6,

All the way down to 5,

3.

Your special deep meditative place.

You can come back here any time you hear my voice or any time you listen to this meditation.

Here you continue to rest and quietly and safely,

Continue to review and practice and learn,

Really learn with every cell of your body what I have shared with you at one level.

As you imagine a little story I'm going to tell you at this level.

Yes,

A story.

Listen to me,

All ears,

Like a curious enchanted child with a great imagination taking it all in.

There was once a modern line dancing studio situated in the center of the top floor of a tall building.

Every Saturday night,

Dolby,

The teacher director,

Played his regular line music,

Line dance music for everyone,

And taught and directed them to dance.

There were so many people in the building wanting to learn how to dance that they would line up and down the central stairwell and even out into the corridors of the different floors and they would dance to the music and follow Dolby's directions over the PA system.

They would dance following his orders and stop when he said pause.

When they first started learning,

They needed his guidance.

Every Saturday began with the song,

Country Roads Take Me Home.

Dolby would keep the rhythm and call out the moves clearly and loudly over the PA system.

Forward,

Backward,

Spin,

Pause,

Bow,

Back,

Forward,

Spin,

Pause,

Bow,

Change partners.

All the actions very smooth.

Everyone followed his instructions in a very coordinated way.

At the beginning,

If his mic cut out by accident,

The dancers could not easily hear his directions,

So they would move at the wrong time.

Or they would freeze up or they would swing when they were supposed to bow,

Bump into each other.

Their dancing would become awkward and confusing.

However,

They practiced again and again and again every Saturday for three or four years until they had become very familiar with the routines.

So familiar that every time they heard Country Road Take Me Home,

They could remember their moves they made when Dolby's mic was working.

They could remember all of the instructions he gave while the music was going.

Dolby had previously given them lots of practice and they had really good memories.

Even after Dolby retired,

His students continued meeting on Saturday nights.

They would put on the old records and every part of them knew when and how to respond to the music.

Such fun.

Now,

I would like you,

I would like to invite you to visualize yourself happier and healthier.

With steady body parts,

Relaxed muscles,

Perky steps,

Good balance and coordination,

Able to eat and excrete with ease.

You were born with a blueprint of perfect health and you have lots of memories that can support you.

Your unconscious mind can always access this information.

As a part of you does that now,

I would like to invite you to remember a time you got a scratch or a scrape.

Just a little one.

And as you looked at it,

You knew for sure that it would heal on its own.

It was just a matter of time.

And remember how it felt to know it would heal.

Now double that feeling of being very sure,

Knowing,

Very confident knowing that it would heal.

And put your thumb and ring finger together to lock that feeling in now.

As you hold on to that feeling,

Imagine whatever symptoms you are currently having healing inevitably.

As if it were just a matter of time.

That's right.

Just like that.

So now,

When your unconscious knows what to do,

When it knows how to do it in a way that is just right for you,

When your unconscious knows when to do it and agrees to help you do it,

You can use your own time and your own way to return to a wakeful state,

Feeling stronger,

Happier,

And more optimistic.

If your unconscious mind is not finished,

You can return to a wakeful state anyway.

When it agrees to practice the lessons hundreds of thousands of times until mastery,

While you sleep peacefully,

Drink your morning coffee,

Brush your teeth,

Or go about your daily chores.

Now,

When you are ready,

Let the surface you are floating on return back to the floor,

Settle into here and now,

And use your own time and your own way to return,

Feeling well-rested and replenished.

Practice this program often for better results.

Peace.
