Premasudha tells a story about 10 men crossing a river to highlight our difficulty including ourselves in the equation of life. Just as the men kept forgetting to count themselves, and ended up thinking someone must have drowned, we often fail to consider (or count) our own dear selves. We treat ourselves like objects or mere functional units rather than full human beings with needs and dreams and feelings and a perspective all our own. Our lives become happier and more meaningful as we turn to love and honour our own selves.

In all the years that I've been working with people,

The thing that most people I've encountered have the hardest time doing is learning to love and respect themselves in a deep way.

And there's an old Eastern story about this,

That there were ten men crossing this river.

And when they got to the other side,

There was somebody put in charge of counting to make sure nobody had been left behind.

So he counted and he just found nine.

So,

Like,

Where was the person who drowned?

Where?

Nobody saw him in trouble.

So somebody else counted,

And again,

They counted nine.

This kept going,

And of course,

The thing they were forgetting to do was to count themselves.

Now this is the thing that we most forget to do,

And it's the most important thing,

Really.

It's to kind of put yourself in the equation more.

Yeah,

It's like,

You know,

In a family,

If the mom's feeling down,

Not happy,

Nobody in the family's feeling happy.

So the same principle operates with our own kind of relationship with ourselves,

Taking care of ourselves.

It's like,

If we're not putting our arms around ourselves and including ourselves in the equation,

Then our lives aren't going to work as well.

Yeah,

It's like,

You know,

Sure,

We may all have to earn a living,

But it's by listening,

You know,

To yourself,

To hear what the best work is for you.

It's connected,

The best connected to the kind of person you are,

And maybe the bigger reason why you're here on the earth.

You know,

Just ignoring all those things,

And just looking at yourself like an object,

And that you have to earn money to take care of this object.

That's the way of alienation,

And it doesn't bring happiness.

So,

You know,

Our world is getting so crowded,

And there's becoming a shortage of resources.

So it's really important now for our stability and well-being that we start to honor our intrinsic worth.

Yeah,

And that we don't just get lost in a tremendous grab for resources.

Yeah,

You're worth more than that.

And what I found,

You know,

In my own life is the more I really loved and honored and listened to myself,

Then the much more my economics were,

My financial needs were solved seamlessly,

Without sacrifice.

Just sort of like a loving universe helping.

It took some years to get to this level of trust,

But it is possible to live this way,

And more of us could do it.

And our relationships would be richer,

And I'll tell you,

There'd be less mental illness.

Yeah,

Yeah.

Okay,

Just wanted to say all this and encourage you to,

You know,

Love and honor yourself.

Okay,

Bless your heart.
