In this practice we focus on the things that we all have in common – our shared human emotions and experiences. Sometimes we can feel like we will never be truly understood by another, but the humanity and kindness that we all have in common connects us. This peacebeam can be used individually or as one day of the Begin Bright series.

Hi,

Welcome to Peacebeam.

Let us begin.

Step one,

Notice.

Just start to notice how you feel today.

What is your emotional state?

Are you happy?

Anxious?

Just take a few seconds and tune in to yourself.

And just notice.

As we move to step two,

Breathe.

Just bring your attention now to your breath and as you continue to breathe,

Normally just start to notice how your breath moves in and out.

And just watch it for a few moments.

And as you feel some ease start to arrive,

Just imagine that your breath is moving in and out of your heart.

And that the rhythm of your heart and the rhythm of your breath are connecting in you in this moment and creating a place of deep relaxation.

A place for you to drop into your own natural rhythm.

Step three,

Activate.

We are complex creatures,

Each one of us a cosmos of our own.

Our individual lives are so layered,

It's impossible to ever really share with another what it is to be us.

And that can be the heartbreak of being human.

Our sense that somehow we are never truly understood.

But consider this,

We may never know the detail of another person's cosmos and the detail of ours may never be fully known.

But there is so much that we have in common.

Truly our common sense is what connects us profoundly and deeply to each other.

I know your joy because I feel joy.

I know your sorrow because I feel sorrow.

And I know your love because I love.

This is where we connect to each other in our common experience of what it is to be human,

What it feels like.

So in some ways it doesn't really matter if we will never be fully understood because if we know our own love and we know our own kindness,

In that we truly do understand each other.

And when we peace beam we look for the common sense that runs through all of us and we send what connects us out so that it can meet the same thing in others and light the world with that connection of goodness.

Step four,

Beam.

The goodness that is in you is the same goodness that is in every other human.

We can meet each other in that and we can understand each other there.

So today feel your own goodness,

Feel it fizz in yourselves and create a smile and send it out to bless the world.

Have a beautiful day.

Hello Jane and PBT! I’ve listened to this one many times, but haven’t reviewed it for some reason 🤔. I do love the perspective on this subject matter and how you, Jane, say: “...now consider this...” that’s when I know there’s a high potential for thought changes and shifts to occur over here 🤯. Ok. I for one, have thought myself to be a very sympathetic, and at times empathetic (when the situation allowed me to be) person. You just made me realize that I don’t have to understand exactly what someone else may be going through; just based on the sheer fact that as another human being, I’m also able to feel love, hurt, pain, anguish, fear and so on. We may feel these emotions on different levels of course, but I AM still connected to everyone else as a whole. Moving forward, I will not immediately dismiss empathizing upon someone else’s situation simply because I’ve not been in that EXACT scenario too. As always, my deepest appreciation and affections 🙏🏽🎋🥰🌺

We do misunderstand what we already understand, don't we? Brilliantly and gently posited. Thank you.
