Let's begin together by speaking about what it means when we say Christian meditation.

In our busy age,

Meditation often brings to mind Eastern practices or self-help techniques.

Yet long before that,

The people of God were invited into stillness.

Throughout scripture,

We hear the call to be still and know that I am God.

Psalm 46 10.

Christian meditation is not about emptying the mind,

But about filling it with the awareness of God's presence,

Resting not in ourselves,

But in Him.

In the earlier centuries of the Church,

Men and women known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers withdrew into silence and solitude to seek unbroken communion with Christ.

Later in monasteries and abbeys,

The way of prayer deepened through what came to be called contemplation,

A prayer of quiet love,

Grounded in scripture,

Sustained by grace.

Saint John of the Cross wrote of silent music where the soul listens for God.

Saint Teresa of Avila described prayer as a simple gaze toward Him who loves us.

And the anonymous author,

The Cloud of Unknowing,

Urged believers to lift their hearts to God with a humble word of love.

Through all these voices,

The thread is the same,

To draw near to Christ,

To rest in His presence,

And to let His Spirit transform the heart.

So as we enter this time of meditation,

Know this,

You are not striving to reach God,

God is already here,

Simply learning to notice Him.

And now as we move gently into today's meditation,

A time of surrender,

Not surrender of defeat,

But as trust in the One who holds all things.

Settle where you are,

Let the body find a posture of ease and openness,

Breathe in slowly,

And exhale,

Feel yourself arrive.

This moment is enough,

You are enough.

God is here.

Let your attention rest on the simple rhythm of breath,

A gift you did not create,

A rhythm sustained by the Spirit who gives life.

As you breathe,

Whisper upwardly,

Lord Jesus Christ,

I am here with you.

Allow the name of Jesus to rest quietly in your heart.

If distractions come,

Simply return to His name.

Now bring awareness to the body,

The forehead,

The shoulders,

The chest.

With each breath out,

Release tension.

With each breath in,

Welcome peace.

As you exhale,

Picture placing down the burdens you have carried,

The worries,

The outcomes,

The things beyond your control.

You might imagine laying them at the feet of Christ.

In your head,

Picture something you've been holding tightly,

A situation,

A fear,

A longing.

See yourself offering it to Him.

Whisper the words,

Lord,

I release what is not mine to hold.

Allow silence to stretch a little here,

Maybe 20 seconds.

Remember His words from Matthew 11 28,

Come to me,

All you who labor and are heavy laden.

And I will give you rest.

Let those words settle deep.

Rest in His gift,

Not your achievement.

Now,

Imagine yourself resting in the presence of Jesus.

Not speaking,

Not striving,

Simply being held in His peace.

If thoughts arise,

Let them drift,

Pass like clouds across a white sky.

Return to this silent prayer.

I am yours,

Lord.

I surrender.

I surrender.

Feel that prayer as rhythm,

Breathing in His love,

Breathing out your need to control.

Here in this stillness,

You are safe,

You are known,

You are loved.

Begin to notice the room again,

The sounds around you,

The light behind your closed eyes.

Take one final deep breath.

As you exhale,

Whisper a quiet thank you.

When you are ready,

Open your eyes gently.

Carry this stillness with you into the rest of your day.

Let surrender become not a single act,

But a posture of heart.

Daily yes to the God who already holds everything you've released.

As we conclude,

I leave you with an original song,

A sound of worship to conclude this time of stillness.

You quiet my soul,

Nothing to offer.

I surrender,

Jesus,

I surrender all my plans,

I surrender.

Jesus,

I surrender.
