This meditation gives practical guidance at the beginning to help you understand awareness of the breath and how to find the silent moments in your own mind. Then it leads into a guided meditation helping you to bring your awareness to the breath, while allowing your thoughts to drift on by.

Finding the silence between thoughts.

Silence in the mind can often be momentary,

Even when you have been meditating for years.

But when your mind is always chattering away,

How do you create the silence?

Firstly,

Let's just recognise that silence already exists in your mind.

It exists in between the thoughts and also behind the thoughts.

In this meditation we're going to extend the silence in between the thoughts by shifting our awareness.

We will first place our awareness on the breath.

What the mind will try to do is name everything that is going on.

I am breathing in.

I can feel the air moving into my lungs,

And so on.

This is thought,

Not awareness.

Awareness is when you can be aware that you are breathing.

You can feel the movement of the body.

You know that air is moving in and out,

But you are not attached to it.

You are not naming it.

At first you may only catch glimpses of this silence.

That is perfect.

You are trying to teach the mind a new trick.

When you are learning a new skill you will often find that one day it works like magic,

And another is like you are starting from scratch.

But this is just how it goes.

So be kind to yourself and allow yourself to have good days and bad days.

Find yourself a comfortable sitting position.

It is best to have your back straight but relaxed.

If it feels good,

Support your back with a pillar.

Relax the muscles in your face,

Shoulders,

Back,

Arms and legs.

If you would like,

Close your eyes.

Take a full and deep slow breath in.

Slowly exhale through the mouth.

Continue this slow controlled breath.

As you do this let any thought that appears in your mind to drift right through,

Just like a cloud blowing on the wind.

Let your breath become relaxed and automated.

Continue to allow any thoughts to just drift right through,

Like a cloud floating through.

For a moment become aware of your breath.

Feel it,

Sense it,

Let go.

Just keep that awareness on the breath.

Be aware of it but not attached to it.

If you have any thoughts that begin to appear in the mind,

Just let them drift through.

Be aware of your breath but not attached.

Feel it,

Sense it,

Let go.

Let any thoughts drift through,

Like a cloud.

Take a slow deep breath in.

When you're ready,

Slowly exhale.

When you're ready,

Take another slow deep breath and release.

You have done very well and however this meditation went today,

It was just perfect for today.

Start to slowly move your fingers and toes.

Now you have experienced momentary silence,

You can experience it again and again.

Remember between and behind your thoughts,

Silence already exists.

When the time is right,

Open your eyes.

Thank you for joining me,

I have truly been blessed with your presence.

You
