Aum.

Greetings and welcome.

Coming up we have a full cycle meditation and visualization based on the Medicine Buddha,

A Vajrayana Tantric practice.

Before we begin,

Have in mind the kind of healing you wish for yourselves and others.

Approach this practice with a clear intent.

Create a space in which you will not be disturbed.

Switch off any notifications,

Bells and whistles and put the cat out.

In this meditation we will be sitting together for around an hour.

Please make sure that the position you adopt gives you the most comfort.

It can be in a traditional lotus or half lotus position on a cushion or sitting straight backed in a chair or on a meditation bench.

For this practice avoid lying down.

Wear comfortable loose clothing that does not restrict the blood flow and keeps you warm and comfortable.

Before we start this practice,

Have an image of the Medicine Buddha close at hand and become familiar with the image of the Buddha.

The color is the seated position,

The robe,

The image of the face and so on.

A full color thangka or postcard that gives you a clear image featuring the deep lapis lazuli color of the Buddha is the best.

As we begin the visualizations it's not necessary to have a 100% clear picture of the image in our minds.

Simply being able to recall some of the colors and some of the features is a good start.

With practice this visualization becomes clearer and easier.

As you begin to be centered and settled,

Make a mindful offering of incense to signal your readiness to begin.

Sitting comfortably in your chosen position,

Gently close your eyes and take time to let your body settle.

Gently sway your back and rotate your shoulders and your neck.

Find that centered sweet spot that gives you the greatest comfort.

Focus your attention on your breath,

The natural,

Easiest breath,

Allowing the exhalations to become progressively longer than the inhalations.

Notice yourself becoming still.

In your mind's eye,

With your imagination,

Visualize yourself walking on a path leading from where you are living toward a distant land.

The path is well worn as many have been this way before.

The ground is easy on the feet and you notice that it slopes gently upward.

You notice that there may be others on this path with you,

Especially if you are doing this meditation in a group.

You feel strongly connected to them with a shared sense of purpose.

As you walk,

You are already feeling a strong magnetic attraction to the land that you see opening up around you and before you.

A dominant feature is the intense lapis lazuli blue sky that already stretches overhead.

As you continue walking,

You begin to hear the Medicine Buddha mantra in the distance,

Softly at first and then building in intensity.

To you it sounds familiar and welcoming and holds the promise of fulfillment.

You notice that you are filled with joy and expectation.

Walking mindfully further,

You arrive eventually at a gateless gate protected by two guardians standing vigilant to the left and to the right.

Before crossing the threshold,

We stop to take refuge and to confirm our intentions.

Hold hands,

Palms together in gassho.

Let's take refuge in the Buddha together.

To the Buddha,

Dharma and Sangha I go for refuge.

Through the practice of Medicine Buddha,

May I and all living beings be free from disease,

Pain and suffering and enjoy robust good health.

For the sake of all living beings,

May I attain enlightenment.

To the Buddha,

Dharma and Sangha I go for refuge.

Through the practice of Medicine Buddha,

May I and all living beings be free from disease,

Pain and suffering and enjoy robust good health.

For the sake of all living beings,

May I attain enlightenment.

To the Buddha,

Dharma and Sangha I go for refuge.

Through the practice of Medicine Buddha,

May I and all living beings be free from disease,

Pain and suffering and enjoy robust good health.

For the sake of all living beings,

May I attain enlightenment.

Let us recite the Four Immeasurables.

May all beings have happiness and the true causes of happiness.

May all beings be free from suffering and the true causes of suffering.

May all beings never be parted from the happiness that is beyond suffering.

May all beings abide in peace and equanimity,

Their minds free from attachment,

Aversion and free from indifference.

Let us recite the Seven Limbed Prayer.

With body,

Speech and mind,

I bow to the Buddha,

Making real and imagined offerings vast as space.

I regret all my negativities and rejoice in all virtues.

Please remain until every living being is awakened.

I request wise and compassionate guidance and dedicate my merit and the merit of others to the enlightenment of all living beings.

In your mind's eye,

Step with full awareness across the threshold of the gateless gate into the realm of the Pure Land.

As you step further into the Pure Land,

You begin to notice your spirit lifting and your cares and worries dropping away.

Each step makes you feel lighter and with each step your senses are becoming brighter.

You notice,

You see colours more intensely.

The greens,

The blues,

The yellows,

The reds.

All red and intense.

You hear all possible frequencies of sound.

The harmonies of all voices,

Lifted up in joy and gratitude.

There is a warmth in your being.

You feel deeply connected here.

You have been here before and this feels very familiar.

Up ahead you see an expansive lake of cobalt blue opening up.

From the centre of this lake arises a vast,

White,

Many-petalled lotus.

The roots of this lotus stretch deep into the soil at the bottom of the lake.

You know that this signifies that from the depths of suffering beauty and purity are created.

On the white lotus and seated on a moon disk is the Medicine Buddha himself.

On seeing him with your own eyes you are overcome with feelings of gratitude and love.

From him you feel you are immediately welcomed and fully accepted.

There is a great compassion and an understanding of your needs.

He welcomes you without reserve.

As you cast your eyes upon his figure you begin to notice details more clearly.

His body is dark blue like lapis lazuli,

The colour of healing.

He is in the nature of light like a rainbow or a hologram,

Vivid but intangible.

With his left hand he holds a bowl of powerful healing nectars and with his right hand a medicine plant,

The symbol of healing.

He beckons you to come closer and to sit closer to him.

Imagine now that he is at about the height of your forehead,

A few feet in front of you.

He is everything beautiful gathered into one.

He gazes at you with as much love as a mother for her only child.

You have a very real sense that the Medicine Buddha is actually here with you,

That if you looked up or opened your eyes you would see him.

Cultivate the feeling that you are in the presence of a truly amazing being.

He has a magnetic,

Energetic presence.

His love and compassion for all living beings shines forth and envelops you completely.

Formulate your request for healing in your mind.

Request Medicine Buddha to help in whatever way is needed to help you or the person you are practicing for.

Make your request clear and with full intention.

For example,

Your request may be to relieve pain,

To boost immunity,

To be free from viral symptoms such as a sore throat and temperature,

To promote rapid recovery,

To be free from anxiety,

Depression or despair.

You can also ask assistance for relief from circumstances that may be causing the condition or making it worse,

Including poverty,

Work stress,

Bad living conditions and so on.

We can make this request on our own behalf or on the behalf of others.

Visualize that Medicine Buddha very willingly responds to your request.

Instantly,

Deep blue colored healing lights and nectars emanate from his heart,

Come to the crown of your head and flow down,

Filling your body or that of the being for whom you are practicing.

You can direct the lights and nectars to specific parts of the body initially,

But there is such an abundance of them that they will end up filling the whole body to overflowing.

If you wish,

You can visualize other colored lights and nectars flowing from his heart into the crown of your head.

The color white typically symbolizes purification and peace.

Orange symbolizes abundance.

Red symbolizes energy.

Dark blue is especially powerful.

Imagine that this process eliminates and purifies all disease,

All pain,

All suffering and all causes of disease,

Pain and suffering instantly,

Completely and permanently.

Imagine it being incomparably more potent than the most powerful medical treatment known to you.

Continue with this visualization and join in with the recitation of the Medicine Buddha's mantra.

As you visualize your healing for yourself and for others,

Bring into it as much feeling as you can.

Bring it into the reality and embodiment of your body.

Make it real on this plane.

Accept the healing completely.
