Hot Chocolate Breathing is a cozy, calming exercise that kids can do with a trusted adult or on their own. Using an imaginary mug of hot chocolate—not too hot, not too cold, just right—children practice slow, mindful breathing. They pretend to smell the yummy chocolate as they breathe in, then gently blow on it to cool it down as they breathe out.

Transcript

Hello and welcome to this hot chocolate breathing practice.

Take a moment to sit taller or stand taller.

If you'd like to bring your arms out to the sides and up and give yourself a little stretch,

Go ahead and do that now.

Are you ready?

Let's begin.

Imagine you're holding a beautiful mug.

One hand is holding the handle and the other hand is supporting the bottom of the mug.

The mug is not too hot and it's not too cold.

You're starting to notice the warmth of the cup connecting to your hands.

Begin to bring this imaginary mug just underneath your nose.

Can you take a breath in and smell the chocolate?

And then breathe out through your lips as if you're blowing on the chocolate to cool it down.

Go ahead and try that one more time.

Breathe in through your nose,

Smell the hot chocolate,

And then breathe out through your lips,

Blowing on the hot chocolate to cool it down.

And just one more time,

Breathe in through your nose,

Imagining the smell of hot chocolate while you hold the mug right underneath your nose,

Then breathe out through your lips,

Cooling the hot chocolate.

Get ready to wipe the whipped cream off your nose and enjoy your beautiful imaginary cup of just right hot chocolate for you.

Thank you.
