The Science Behind Breaking Through Limiting Beliefs
In this lecture we'll break through limiting mental patterns by exploring how the brain and nervous system work and why meditation, yoga and energy psychology are so effective. I'll explain neuroscience concepts in simple ways that empower you and help you better understand your mind, emotions and body. Then we'll go through a 4 step process to put this information into practical use in our daily life using breathing meditation, EFT and heart math.

I'm Morgan Weber and I am so excited that you're all here with me for this workshop about breaking through limiting beliefs.
A topic that I think is one of the most important,
If not the most important things we can address in our life is how to free ourselves from some of our limiting thought patterns that hold us back in life or keep us in perpetual patterns that don't really serve ourselves or don't really serve the world.
So it makes me so excited to know that there are so many of you out there interested in doing this work and that we are able to connect together in this way.
So this workshop,
Breaking Through Limiting Beliefs,
Is something very personal to me,
Both in my own journey of discovery and also in my profession.
It's really at the core of what I have dedicated myself to.
And so I wanted to share with you a little bit about myself to give you context about why I care so much about this topic.
So like many of us,
My own personal struggles led me into my studies and into my passion and into my profession.
When I was in my late teens,
I ended up experiencing an autoimmune disorder,
Which if you don't know what that is,
It's when your body recognizes some part of yourself as foreign and decides to attack it.
And this autoimmune disorder had a number of negative impacts on my health and well-being,
Both physically,
Mentally,
Emotionally.
I ended up experiencing a lot of anxiety and depression and insomnia and real huge fluctuations in weight gain and energy loss and also just this real sense of why is my body attacking itself?
You know,
This sense of suddenly distrusting my own body and feeling really frightened actually about like,
Well,
If it could attack this part of myself,
Could it not attack all the other parts?
Of course,
This experience had me questioning,
Why did this happen?
What causes this?
What are these things,
Autoimmune disorders?
And you know,
To this day,
There's actually quite a lot of research still happening about them and quite a lot of answers yet to be made and questions yet to be answered.
But the direction that led me was studying environmental science and understanding how the environment impacts us,
How it impacts our health and our well-being,
Both as an individual and as a society.
I got into yoga and meditation and one of the first things I began noticing was that when I did yoga and when I meditated,
All of my symptoms started to reduce and I started feeling better.
And then I got into Ayurveda,
Which is the traditional medicine system of India,
And worked at an Ayurvedic clinic and started setting massage and bodywork.
And I was really mixing these two worlds of science and spirituality continuously in my own personal exploration,
Getting a degree in science and then loads of qualifications in more alternative health and wellness.
I went on to study EFT,
Which is emotional freedom technique,
And became a matrix re-imprinting practitioner and I've studied with Dr.
Joe Dispenza,
Who if you don't know about him,
You will by the end of this workshop.
He's one of the greatest thought leaders,
I think,
Of our time and he teaches us a lot about neuroscience and how to make it practical.
And I also studied habit science with some of the leading thought leaders there,
James Clear and so on.
And so where I'm coming from is a lot of studying from a very personal driven perspective originally and really combining so much of my science background with my spiritual inquiries and then working with truly at this point in my life thousands of individuals through yoga,
Through meditation,
Through bodywork,
Through what they call energy psychology,
Which is EFT.
And understanding that so many of us have so many of the same root issues and that many,
Many of our issues,
Whether they are physical,
Whether they are emotional,
Whether they are mental,
Come from the root cause of our perception,
Of our thoughts,
Of our limiting beliefs.
And I have a feeling that you're not dissimilar if you're here to many of the people I've worked with,
Which means you have your own struggles and the reality is we all do and we all have limiting beliefs that impact us and lead to stress,
Bad habits,
Self-criticism,
Doubt,
Anxiety,
Self-worth issues,
Fear,
Negative body image issues.
There are so many and we all experience this to some degree or another.
The stories might be different,
But there is something universal in our human struggle with some of the limiting beliefs in our life.
And the other thing that's quite interesting about observing our limiting beliefs is that they're often really repetitive.
If you can just take a moment and think about how many times you felt like,
Oh man,
Here I am again,
Here I am in this situation.
Or man,
Why do I keep doing that or not doing that?
Why do I not make that decision or not speak up for myself or I always react in that way and I know that I don't want to,
But some part of me keeps doing that.
And what we can often feel is stuck,
Stuck in these behaviors,
Stuck in these thought patterns on a hamster wheel.
And I'm sure many of you can relate to this and are kind of sitting there nodding.
And we all know as well that these repetitive behaviors that don't serve us really,
Really impact our life.
I mean,
I think about,
First of all,
How they drain our energy and especially if it's thought patterns.
How many times have you spent worrying about something,
Stressing about something,
Getting all tied up in a knot and draining your energy later to think,
I really didn't need to worry about that.
I didn't need to stress about that.
And imagine if you hadn't have stressed about that,
Where all of that energy could have been funneled to,
What other parts of your life could that energy have gone to?
And just feeling energized,
Just feeling good,
Just sleeping better,
Right?
How many times have you not done something because of some negative thought patterns that keep reoccurring?
I know I have,
You know,
And this is why we want to work on this because we don't want to feel stuck there.
These thought patterns create more stress in our life.
They definitely impact our relationships,
Whether they be with our partner,
Whether they be with our children or our friends or even in our career.
How many times have you,
You know,
Again,
Maybe gotten all worked up or reacted in a certain way or made a certain decision because you perceived the situation in a way that actually came from your past.
And then when you communicated with the person about it or you looked back on it,
You realized,
Oh,
Wow,
That was all in my head.
I didn't,
That wasn't actually their intentions or what was going on.
And man,
If only I had realized that in the moment,
I would have changed course,
Changed reactions.
One of my favorite things that I like to think about is that responsibility is the ability to respond rather than react.
And this is what we're stepping into here.
So I want to congratulate you on watching this because it means you are stepping already into response ability,
The ability to respond and recognizing I want to step out of the unconscious reactions of my life because they impact me in all these negative ways.
And if I keep going in this way,
I realize it's going to make me eventually sick.
And this is something that I personally have realized in my own life,
How these negative thought patterns and behaviors that become repetitive out of them actually physically make you sick.
And you know,
On a personal level,
I think a lot of my autoimmune disorder came out of some of those things.
And I have spoken to countless people who also feel that way.
And there are many books about this as well now.
But ultimately,
At the end of the day,
The biggest issue is that it makes us unhappy.
And nobody wants to be unhappy.
We want to live a good life,
Right?
Like that's really what this is all about.
And we can,
We can totally live a good life.
And I know that you're here because you feel that in you,
You feel that there is another way to be that you don't have to be stuck,
That you don't have to keep repeating these patterns that you can feel positive and confident and relaxed and excited about your life without hesitating and doubting and that you can feel self loving and courageous and fearless.
So I am so excited for you because if you're here,
It means you're already making those changes.
And in this workshop,
I'm going to give you some really specific,
It's kind of a four step process that I've created with how to deal with these limiting beliefs.
So I'm so excited that you're ready to break through them.
But before we break through them,
We first need to understand our mind a little bit better.
We need to understand this tool that we're working with.
So this is a beautiful quote from Louise Hay that I just want to set us up with to start.
She says,
Your mind is a tool for you to use in any way you wish.
You can untrain and retrain this tool of yours.
The way you now use your mind is only a habit and habits,
Any habits can be changed if we want to do so.
Or even if we only know that it's possible,
Quiet the chatter in your mind and really think about this concept.
Your mind is a tool you can choose to use in any way you want.
Let's all just literally close our eyes right now and feel the implications of that statement.
Your mind is a tool you can choose to use in any way you wish.
How good does that already feel remembering that?
So let's look more into this beautiful tool,
Our mind.
Another passage that's a more ancient traditional one says from Lao Tzu,
Watch your thoughts for your thoughts become your words.
Watch your words for your words become your actions.
Watch your actions for your actions become your habits.
And watch your habits for your habits become your life.
Now this is a really old saying and comes from an old wisdom tradition,
But what we're finding is that modern neuroscience and biology is completely validating this.
Every single thought that you have changes the structure of your brain.
Every time you have a thought,
You're creating a synaptic connection.
You're creating a connection between two nerve fibers,
Two synapses.
And so you're thinking,
You're making an association.
And the more you make that association,
The thicker those nerve fibers get and the stronger the bond gets.
So just like if we exercise and if we pump weights,
Our muscles get bigger.
Every single time we think a thought,
The nerve fiber and the synaptic connection that is that thought in our brain gets stronger.
And as we have multiple thoughts happening and multiple nerve fires happening at the same time and multiple associations happening,
We create what are called neural networks.
And similarly,
As we reinforce and reinforce those associations mentally,
Those neural networks bind together stronger and stronger and stronger.
Now,
What does this mean?
It means that these become the path of least resistance.
So it becomes easier and easier and easier to think those thoughts where the neural networks are stronger,
Where the synaptic connections are stronger.
So if I'm thinking,
I never get anything done.
I never complete things.
I'm never good enough.
I'm never good enough.
God,
My butt looks big.
Oh man,
I never know what to say.
Oh,
It's not safe for me to speak my truth.
And the more and more,
If we are thinking those thoughts every day,
Every day,
All the time,
We're just reinforcing them.
We're making that connection stronger and it becomes our dominant way of thinking.
And when we think a certain way for a long enough time,
It becomes our mood.
And when we think long enough and stay in that mood long enough,
It becomes our personality.
And when we act from that character or personality long enough,
It determines how the whole of our life unfolds.
So just like this quote from Lao Tzu,
It really is true.
It begins with your thoughts and like a domino effect cascades into your life,
Right?
The way that Dr.
Joe Dispensa says it,
He says,
Nerve cells that fire together,
Wire together.
Learning is creating a new synaptic connection.
Learning is reinforcing those synaptic connections,
So getting them to get stronger.
And being is acting automatically based on learned repeated patterns.
So if we want to be calm,
If we want to be peaceful,
If we want to be happy and confident,
All of these things,
But in the back of our mind,
We're going like,
You're not good enough,
You're stupid,
You're ugly,
You never make enough money,
Nobody will ever like you.
And we're remembering over and over again,
The things that taught us those beliefs.
We're going to lead ourselves into a way of being that is far from peaceful,
Happy,
Joyful,
All of those things,
Right?
So obviously,
We need to train our mind to focus on the thoughts that generate the way of being we want to embody.
Now I know 100% as much as anybody else that this is not always easy at all.
And part of the reason it's not easy is because 95% of our thoughts are in our subconscious,
In our unconscious.
And because of that,
We're like not really aware that we're having all those negative thoughts that are leading to our mood,
That are leading to our way of being and our life.
So what do we do here?
If 95% of our thoughts are actually automatic habits,
Learned programming,
That generally actually we learned when we were quite young,
And then we just reinforced them for many years,
How do we deal with this?
That is exactly what we're going to look at.
And I have some really clear,
Specific,
Easy techniques that anybody can do to shift those automatic thoughts.
I just want to mention,
We do learn so many of our thoughts from our early childhood.
And when we are between the ages of two and seven,
We're in what is called the hypnagogic state.
And our brain is primarily running on theta brain waves so that we can learn things just through observation.
And this is a very beneficial evolutionary tool that we've adapted into because when you're young,
There are so many things that you need to learn in order to survive in the world.
And anybody that has children or has spent time around children knows,
You know,
They just watch and repeat.
They're like little parrots.
So we absorb so much from our parents,
From our culture,
From the experiences we had when we were young,
That teach us and create our beliefs about ourselves and the world.
And we need to honor that many times in that time of our life,
The belief was appropriate.
But oftentimes,
As we get older,
That belief no longer serves us.
And these are very much the limiting beliefs that we want to be looking at.
What are my old subconscious views about the world that really I know are not accurate and don't serve me now in my life?
So our very first necessity is to uncover some of those subconscious beliefs.
Now there are many of them,
So don't feel overwhelmed.
We just want to start with a few at a time.
But even this can be challenging because some of those subconscious beliefs,
We've been running for so long that they just feel normal.
We don't even know that they're unconscious.
Like we don't even know they're running.
But what we do know is that the behaviors resulting from them,
The scenarios and the patterns resulting from them,
Oftentimes are actually painfully clear in our life.
So the first step is self-awareness.
In neuroscience,
They call this metacognition.
So we're bringing some of that 95% unconscious into our conscious mind through things like meditation,
Mindfulness,
Journaling,
Self-observation.
In the yoga tradition,
This is one of the very,
Very first practices that we learn.
It's called svajaya.
And svaj means self and adyaya means getting closer to in Sanskrit.
And so the practice of self-observation means you're getting closer to yourself.
And when you do that,
When you cultivate that relationship,
You then step into the power to change these patterned behaviors.
So we understand that every thought changes the structure of our brain and that much of it is subconscious and we need to bring it forward into our conscious.
But another thing I really want to tell you about is how every single thought we have and every emotion we have actually impacts every cell in our body,
Impacts our physiology.
And there is some tremendous,
Amazing research happening right now about this.
One of my favorite people who is really at the forefront of this is Dr.
Bruce Lipton.
And his book,
Biology of Belief,
Really changed my life and I recommend everybody to read it and to look at his work.
It's fantastic.
There are many other people doing this work as well.
But what I want you to understand is that every time we think a thought,
We produce an emotion and that emotion produces chemicals in our body in the form of neurotransmitters and peptides.
And those little neurotransmitters travel through our body and they're in our interstitial fluid and then they interact with our cell membranes.
And on every cell membrane,
There are receptor sites,
Like I like to imagine little cups ready to catch the peptides or the chemicals that are associated to our thoughts and our emotions and so many other things.
And so they catch them and then they bring them into the cell.
And that informs the cell how to behave.
And the function of all these little receptor sites taking in information from the outside,
Bringing it into the cell,
Is to continually tell our physical body what's happening from the environment.
How do you need to respond to the environment?
And the body actually is always trying to find homeostasis and balance.
It actually is.
And that's something I had to go through a lot of self-inquiry into because it's like,
Wow,
If my body attacked itself,
Like I thought my body was meant to just be naturally balanced and it is and it does.
So we have to understand what are these other influences?
And of course we know the external environment influences our health and our physiology.
What we eat influences our health and our physiology.
But now,
Without a shadow of a doubt,
The science is telling us our thoughts influence our health and our physiology by the chemicals they produce and how they bathe every cell in peptides and neurotransmitters that tells the cell how to respond.
Within every single cell in our body,
In the nucleus is where our DNA lives and every nucleus has the same DNA in my body.
So it's all me,
Right?
And in your body,
It's all you.
And what's really fascinating that they're discovering is that the DNA is a blueprint.
So it's a blueprint to tell all the organelles in the cell and all the cells how to act.
But the influences from outside the cell determine what part of the DNA is being activated and used.
So let me just read this quote to you from Dr.
Candice Perot.
She says,
As our feelings change,
This mixture of peptides travels through your body and your brain.
And they're literally changing the chemistry of every cell in your body.
And as that chemistry in your cells changes,
It activates particular genes,
Or it doesn't activate particular genes.
And this is the field of epigenetics.
Epi in Latin just means above.
So it's talking about the influences above our genetics.
And the very important aspect of this is that our genetics don't determine everything.
You're not doomed just because of your genetics to have a certain disposition and a certain disease.
Perhaps you will have a greater propensity towards that.
But what's so amazing about the research coming out now is that it's not a guarantee that actually your environment,
Which includes your thoughts,
Influence the activation and the expression of your genetic blueprint.
And I find that to be just so awesome because it puts so much power back into our hands.
And it also reminds us how important it is that we tend our thoughts,
That we tend to our mind.
So one of the other interesting aspects of our thoughts and our mind and our emotion and how it influences ourselves is that we can almost become addicted to a certain way of feeling and thinking.
Because as all those peptides bathe the cells,
If there's lots of them and few receptor sites,
The cell membrane will actually produce more little receptor site cups to catch those chemicals of your thoughts and your emotions.
And it means that you increase your capacity to feel that way and then you react to that.
And the more and more you keep thinking those thoughts and producing those peptides,
The more your cells have receptor sites for those chemicals of emotion as they're sometimes called.
Now,
If you stop thinking that way,
Suddenly there's going to be often these moments where your cells have these inter receptor sites and they're like,
Wait,
I was used to anxiety.
I'm ready for anxiety.
Give me those anxiety chemicals.
Give me the anxiety or the drama or the fear or the depression chemical or the sorrow chemical.
And so there's actually this like craving almost for the emotional program that we've been running and that also feels very physical or physiological.
And this is sometimes another aspect of why sometimes it's hard to change.
But I'm going to give you some tools to help you through that.
But I want you to understand this because I feel that as we understand ourselves better,
We can watch ourselves better and come into that higher consciousness,
Self observation,
Metacognition,
And then we use our prefrontal cortex rather than our limbic brain and our stress response.
And we can make a different decision.
The more information you have,
The more empowered you are.
So don't worry that you've maybe been producing loads of receptor sites for fear or sorrow or depression or whatever,
Because your cells are constantly changing and the cell membrane is constantly changing.
So as you make those decisions to shift your thought processes and produce peptides and neurotransmitters that are more associated to gratitude and to love and to being relaxed,
Your cells will change as well and they'll produce more of those receptor sites.
So then you're actually like start,
Your body starts calling out for the love and the gratitude and the relaxation and the connection and all of that.
And in some of the research that I've read,
They say,
You know,
It can be about a two month process to change those cell membranes.
And this also connects to why sometimes they say,
Oh,
It takes 28 to 60 days to change a habit.
So here's another big caveat and catch.
When we're stressed,
We don't think very well.
And we are thinking and acting from our survival instincts,
From the fight,
Flight or freeze response from what's called our limbic brain or our reptilian brain.
And it becomes very difficult to self observe.
And when we self observe,
We stimulate the front part of our brain,
Our neocortex.
So and our cerebellum,
The frontal part of our brain.
So it's very important for us to learn how to diffuse the stress responses correlated to our negative thoughts.
We need to learn how to first kind of stop that.
Then we can start to really change.
And we go from,
You know,
The survival reptilian brain to the rational thinking,
Creative,
Higher consciousness.
And you know what I find so interesting that neuroscience,
Modern neuroscience is recognizing this is all in the front part of our brain.
And in our yogic system,
Right between your eyebrows,
This is called your third eye,
Your Ajna chakra.
And they say it's back behind the eyebrows to the middle of the brain kind of.
And they say this is your seat of wisdom.
And not only there is your prefrontal cortex where you have metacognition,
But also your pituitary gland,
Which really influences all of our hormones and all of these neuropeptides.
And thousands of years ago,
Ancient rishis,
Yogis and meditators understood this to be the seat of so much power.
I love,
I just absolutely love how science and spirituality,
The more I study it,
Actually the more they reinforce each other and are saying the same thing.
So when we're stressed,
Not only do we think poorly,
But every part of our body gets damaged.
Our adrenal glands activate and it changes our mood.
We become irritable or depressed.
We start to lack energy and concentration,
Have problems sleeping,
Get headaches,
All of these things.
Our immune system goes down.
There's less ability to fight and recover from illnesses.
Our cortisol increases.
Our arterial walls and our blood vessels start to constrict and become more rigid,
Which increases blood pressure and heart issues.
Our digestion slows because the body is in a stress response.
It wants to fight or flight.
And so it's like organ function is not a priority right now.
All the blood starts rushing into my limbs,
Into my eyes so that I can fight.
It lowers our bone density.
There are so many things,
Causes pain in our body,
Increases inflammation.
And you want to know what is crazy.
Our body responds the same way to real or just imagined stress.
Just imagining these things causes all the same physiological reactions as if a tiger were chasing you.
You know,
Because the stress response is an evolutionary mechanism to keep us safe.
And it's actually really a good response.
Like we all need these adrenaline responses at many times in our life.
The problem happens is when we get stuck in them and so many of us are stuck in stress responses correlated to so many things in our life and have all of this negative impact on our body.
But it's amazing to also drop into the power of your mind and realize every time you get stuck in a mental stress loop,
You are impacting all of your body in the way I just mentioned,
Whether it's real or imagined.
So I hope this has motivated you to really do this work with me now to shift our thoughts and our perceptions and break through our subconscious limiting beliefs.
So how do we do it?
So the first step is calming the nervous system so that we get out of the stress response and we access the frontal part of our brain,
Metacognition,
Calm all those negative responses in our body and bring the subconscious patterns forward.
And there are many ways to calm yourself through deep breathing,
Through meditation,
Through mindful movement like yoga or qigong or even walking,
Getting fresh air,
Exercise,
Music,
Dance.
There are many ways to take this first step to calm your nervous system when you're dealing with one of these patterns so that you can self-observe.
One of my favorite tools is called EFT,
Emotional freedom technique,
Or otherwise known as tapping.
And this is what we're going to work with primarily today.
And so I just want to introduce it to you right now.
So take a moment to maybe shift up.
Maybe if you need to stand up,
Shake your body a little bit,
Move around.
We just took in like loads of information.
Now we're going to bring this into some practice.
And then just pause a moment and I want you to close your eyes.
And I want you to think about an issue that is repetitive,
Coming up again and again in your life.
You may or may not be clear on what the limiting belief behind that is,
And that's okay right now.
I just want you to think about the issue that you'd like to change.
And when you think about that issue,
Observe the reaction in your body.
So is there a tension in the belly or the chest or the throat or the shoulders of the jaw?
How would you describe that sensation?
What is the emotion related to it?
Allow yourself to feel it.
This is what we're here for.
Like what is this?
Watch it,
Look at it,
Observe it.
And then just internally to yourself,
Scale it from one to 10.
10 being this is a really strong emotion and feeling in my body right now.
So just observe.
And now we're going to go through these points.
So begin just tapping the side of your hand.
And then tapping the top of your head.
All of these points are connected to meridian lines that run through our body that are part of the Chinese medicine system.
Tap the inner edge of your eyebrow.
And then the outer edge of your eyebrow around your temple.
Good.
Tapping below the eye.
So as we tap these points,
We are stimulating energy flow through our body because when we're caught in negative thought processes,
It means our energy is stagnant and stuck in those thought processes.
Tap below your nose.
But the other thing that we're doing is we are stimulating our mind to fire in a different way.
Tap below your chin.
And as we discussed earlier at the beginning,
When you have the thoughts repetitively over and over again as associations of synapses,
They become stronger.
So right now we're going to think about that thing,
That pattern,
But we're going to start stimulating our brain to start firing differently.
Tap below your collarbones.
Just kind of just below the edge,
The inner edge of the collarbones.
Good.
I love to use both hands for this and all four fingers because it's your heart center,
So it really activates it.
And so as we're bringing up whatever our issue is,
Whatever thing we want to change and stimulating our brain to fire in different ways,
We're creating new possible pathways for our mind to go down so that we're not just stuck repeating the same neurological loop of thought and emotion and reaction.
We're creating a new pathway right now.
So come back to tapping the side of your hand.
And now I want you to close your eyes.
And I'm going to verbally guide you through tapping.
And I'm going to say phrases that I want you to repeat after me,
Either out loud or in your head.
It's up to you.
Tapping the side of the hand.
Even though I've had this pattern for so long and I feel all of these emotions and all of this reaction about it.
I'm choosing to love myself anyway.
I'm choosing acceptance.
I'm choosing forgiveness.
And I'm opening myself to changing this.
I'm opening myself to a new perspective.
Good.
Tapping the top of your head now.
All these feelings repeating after me.
All these feelings.
Tapping your inner eyebrow point.
This automatic reaction.
Tapping outer eyebrow by temple.
I don't like these feelings.
This pattern doesn't serve me.
Tapping below the eye.
It keeps happening.
I keep doing this.
Tapping below the nose.
And it's really impacting my life.
Tapping the chin.
And even though this has been happening,
I'm choosing to love myself anyway.
Tapping your collarbone points.
Even though I have this pattern,
I accept myself.
And deep down I want the best for myself.
And I know that I don't have to stay stuck in this pattern.
I know I can change even though I've had it for a really long time.
Tapping the side of the hand even though this keeps happening.
I keep thinking this way.
I forgive myself.
Tapping the top of the head.
I understand that I learned this pattern for a reason.
Tapping the inner eyebrow.
It's part of my history.
No wonder I gained this habit.
It's okay.
Tapping below the eye.
It's okay that I've had these thoughts.
But I'm ready to change now.
Tapping below the nose.
I'm open to change.
Tapping the chin.
I know I can create new thought patterns.
And I am open to what they are.
Tapping the collarbone point.
I open myself to my higher mind.
To my inner wisdom.
To support me in shifting my perspective.
Good.
And now just rest both hands right over your heart center.
And take three really deep breaths into your heart.
And then just check in.
Have your emotions and reactions to this topic shifted.
For most of us,
It will shift quite a bit and it will be reduced.
And you can do just that as long as you need to until you feel the stress response in your body has come down.
And then when the stress response in your body has been diffused,
You access your higher mind.
And from your clarity of thought and from your higher mind,
You're able to explore the subconscious patterns behind this issue.
And you're able to imprint new ones.
So we're going to look into how to do that now.
So open your eyes if you haven't already.
And we're going to move into our next step,
Which is seeing that limiting belief clearly.
As we mentioned earlier,
Often what the actual limiting beliefs are,
Aren't clear,
But the behaviors that we don't appreciate that we're not wanting to repeat anymore,
Those are clear.
And sometimes we just get so busy,
It's hard to drop inward.
We get so stressed out,
It's hard to drop inward and listen in and see what our thoughts really are.
So you first think about,
Right,
What are the issues?
And as we've already done today,
We've picked one issue.
And then we explore what is the limiting belief behind that?
And sometimes this takes a while to uncover.
We can continue to tap and simply talk through it and say,
You know,
The first thing we want to ask ourselves is,
When did this start?
What was happening in my life when this started?
I remember I was this age and I was feeling this way and this happened and my dad said this and then I thought that and whatever,
Or,
You know,
You can go down this whole thing and you go,
And then I thought,
And then I came to believe.
And that's where you want to stop and see clearly.
What did you come to believe?
What are you believing?
I'm believing that I don't deserve love or money or abundance or every time I ask for help,
It's a huge burden on somebody.
So I'm not allowed to ask for help.
So I got to do everything all on my own and everything I do in life is a big weight on my shoulders.
So it's not safe to speak up and stick up for myself or speak my truth.
And you know what?
When we start journaling about this,
Thinking about this,
Exploring this,
Oftentimes we find that little person who came to believe that they were right in the moment,
In the moment,
You know,
And I've worked with many clients who have experienced a lot of childhood trauma and the reality for them as a young one was it wasn't safe to speak up.
But now what we have to do is really teach ourselves that that may have been true then when I imprinted this belief into my subconscious,
But it's not true anymore.
And this is our next step,
Which is finding our higher truth.
Finding our higher truth or what we like to call it in the matrix re-imprinting framework is the positive opposite.
So first of all,
If like what is the higher truth seems really esoteric,
Just go simple and be like,
Well,
What is the opposite that is positive?
So if the phrase or if the belief is I don't deserve love,
The positive opposite is I deserve love.
If the belief is I'm never good enough at anything I do,
The positive opposite is I am good enough or the negative belief,
It's not safe for me to speak my mind or stick up for myself.
It is safe for me.
This is the positive opposite.
So at first it might feel a little bit fake when you say those positive opposites.
So what you really need to do is prove it to yourself and do some exploration like why do I know that that is no longer true because this happened because I know this,
You know all of that.
So behind every problem there's a limiting belief and behind that limiting belief is a greater truth.
And as soon as we find the greater truth or the bigger picture,
The higher wisdom,
It will liberate us.
And we know when we have discovered the greater truth,
The positive opposite,
Because it makes us feel lighter.
We feel its truth in our body.
So part of exploring our greater truth or our positive opposites is sometimes just thinking about it,
Sometimes journaling about it,
Coming to do a session like this is what I do with people.
We do 75 minute sessions and we do the tapping the whole time.
We open up our consciousness into different ways of thinking about the issue and to the origin of it and we bring in new possibilities and then we go,
Ah,
Actually that isn't the truth.
I am deserving.
I am lovable.
You know,
I can get so much out of trying something even if I don't do it perfectly.
And one of the things that I really want to mention that has helped me in uncovering higher truth is understanding that every bad habit and every negative thought even that we have,
Because I think negative thinking is just a bad habit,
Every bad habit has a benefit.
Otherwise we wouldn't do it.
And this comes from habit science research.
And at first you're kind of like,
What?
Like,
No,
Those bad habits are shit and they just do everything wrong in my life and they mess everything up and cause me to self-sabotage.
But if you really are honest with yourself,
Every bad habit you have gives you something.
Otherwise you wouldn't do it.
And what's really important for us to do is ask,
Well,
What is the benefit I'm getting from these negative thoughts?
So if I put myself down every time I start getting a new wonderful idea,
The benefit is that I don't do the idea,
Which means I stay safe and comfortable.
I don't go for that.
I don't put myself out of the comfort zone.
So my benefit is that now I'm feeling comfortable and safe.
And if I look at that,
There's a belief that I can only feel comfortable and safe if I keep doing the same thing over and over again.
That's the limiting belief.
I can only feel comfortable and safe if I just stay in this little bubble.
But the greater truth or the reality is actually the little patterns in this bubble don't make me comfortable.
Many of them actually kind of suck.
I really am not even safe in this because it's not supporting my best self.
So actually,
I don't need to self-criticize.
I don't need to put myself down to stop myself from going forward with my dreams or my relationship to keep myself in the comfort zone in order to feel safe in the world.
Actually putting myself out there can make me feel more comfortable because I'm not stuck in a pattern I don't like.
And secondly,
I can start to explore ways to make myself feel safe and secure in the process of pursuing this thing.
So we want to not just try to get rid of our bad habits,
But we want to replace them with something that has a similar benefit.
So often our thoughts get stuck in the belief of the only way I can get this is through what I've been doing,
Blah,
Blah,
Blah,
Blah,
Blah.
And when you stop and think about what is the benefit of that,
What am I getting out of that,
You go,
Oh,
Actually there's so many other ways to get that benefit.
I can let that bad habit go without letting the benefit of that bad habit go.
I hope that made sense to you.
And I hope that more than anything,
It's just got your brain fired and stirred up in thinking because this is such an important part of the process is just to start thinking about our habits and our patterns differently.
And when we start thinking about them differently,
We start creating new synaptic connections and neural networks that give us different opportunities for behavior.
So even if right now you're just going like,
Oh my God,
Thinking about all these things,
Perfect.
But if you haven't landed on the thing yet,
That's okay.
Keep going down this train of thought.
Keep exploring.
So once we've done a lot of that exploration,
Then we want to re-imprint that new concept that's going to serve us more and really put it in our brain,
Really reinforce those synaptic connections.
And the first step in doing that is creating an affirmation or what I like to call an anchor statement that represents your higher truth.
Because it could be like pages and pages of journaling or so many thoughts that come out of this exploration.
But what we want to do is like turn it into a sutra,
Like a short statement that behind it we know all of the reasons why and that deeper understanding,
But that we can have a quick short statement that packs a whole lot of punch.
So that when our brain starts going down the old repeated way of thinking,
We go hold up,
Wait a minute,
Stop.
And we say our sutra,
Our anchor statement,
Our little affirmation.
And we reinforce our new way of perceiving,
Our new way of being.
And we want affirmations to be in the present tense.
So we can use these affirmations every morning when we get up.
I love to do affirmations when I'm brushing my teeth and looking at myself in the mirror and telling myself this is how I want to think.
This is what I want to focus on.
And you just repeat it and every time you think it in your head,
You get a stronger synaptic connection that's reinforced and a greater neural network.
And then it starts to just get so strong that that becomes your default.
That then becomes your automatic.
But you can use other things to trigger you.
A great one is to use the negative thought itself.
So every time that negative thought comes up,
It triggers me,
It reminds me to say my affirmation.
But explore your life.
What are the things that you do every day that are kind of boring that you can start using as triggers to repeat your affirmation?
So like when you go to bed at night,
When you eat your meal,
That kind of a thing,
When you're stuck in traffic.
This stuff all comes from habit science,
Which teaches us how do we stick to things and what are the ways people try to make change that just don't work at all and nobody ever sticks to and give up on.
So having a trigger is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to stay consistent and make a change in your life.
And the other important aspect is that we not only need to just think about these things,
But we need to feel them in our body.
We need to have an experiential understanding of what our statement means.
And when we do that,
It changes ourselves,
It causes our brain to fire more,
And we bring it deeper and deeper into our memory and then into our way of being.
And one of my favorite ways of doing that to really get it into the body is just what we did in that last little tapping session,
Placing both hands on the heart,
Taking three deep breaths,
Saying your anchor statement and feeling it in your body.
What does it make you feel like?
They call this heart math.
And finally,
The most powerful way I have found in all the things I've studied to really imprint is through tapping.
This is why I love it so much.
And so we are going to do that right now.
So first just close your eyes again.
If you need to,
Again,
Stand up,
Shake around,
Twist the spine,
Move your body,
Do that.
And then let yourself get settled.
Close your eyes.
Allow yourself to come back to the topic we began with,
The pattern that you wanted to change.
Again tapping the side of your hand to stimulate your mind,
To stimulate your energy.
Ask yourself for wisdom and clarity around this topic.
Tapping the top of the head.
I'm opening to my higher truth.
Tapping the inner eyebrow point.
I'm open to receiving clarity.
Tapping the outer eyebrow point,
Understanding this differently.
Tapping below the eye.
I'm asking for the perspective that liberates me from the negative thoughts,
From the negative behaviors below the nose.
What is the highest truth?
Tapping below the chin.
I know that this is the higher truth because.
.
.
Just let yourself go on an inner journey now.
Tapping the collarbone points.
The higher truth is.
.
.
Tapping the side of the hand.
Just repeating to yourself after me,
Even though I believed this limiting thought.
I know the greater truth is.
.
.
In the top of the head.
When I think about this greater truth,
I feel it in my body.
Tapping the inner eyebrow.
The greater truth is.
.
.
And just say whatever it is to you.
In the outer eyebrow point.
And it feels like.
.
.
What does it feel like?
Does it feel light?
Does it feel expansive?
Does it feel nourishing,
Grounding?
Tapping below the eye.
Tapping below the nose.
The real truth is.
.
.
Tapping the chin,
Even though for so many years I believed whatever it is your negative thought pattern is.
Tapping the collarbone.
I now know that that was not the whole picture.
That was a limited understanding.
Tapping the side of the hand.
I am opening my perspective.
Tapping the top of the head to a greater,
Wiser understanding.
Tapping the inner eyebrow point.
That thought may have served me in the past when I learned it.
Tapping the outer eyebrow point.
But it no longer serves me now.
And that's okay.
Tapping below the eye.
I am releasing this thought pattern with love and acceptance.
Tapping below the nose.
It is safe to release this thought pattern.
Tapping the chin.
I am embracing this higher truth.
Tapping the collarbone points.
And the higher truth is.
.
.
Repeat it to yourself.
Keep tapping your collarbone points.
And now find a clarity in your anchor statement so that it is short and simple.
And you can repeat it many times and easily remember it.
My higher truth is.
.
.
And we'll just do one round tapping each of the points and repeating our higher truth anchor statement.
Tapping the side of the hand.
Tapping the top of the head.
Repeating this statement.
Tapping the inner eyebrow.
The outer eyebrow by the temple.
Repeating the statement.
My higher truth is.
.
.
Below the eye.
Below the nose.
Repeating.
Anchoring yourself in your statement.
Tapping the chin.
And the upper jaw.
And then bringing both hands onto your heart.
Taking three deep breaths.
And imagine that with each breath you are breathing in this truth into every single cell in your body.
Notice if there's any color associated to it.
Breathe that color into every single cell of your body.
From the head to the fingertips to the feet.
Until you are so full of this truth and all of its meaning that you are radiating it out beyond you.
And radiate it now to all of your past selves.
And then radiate it to all of your future selves,
This higher truth.
Remind them.
And send it out now to everyone around you.
Good.
And then bring your palms together in front of you and just give them a little rub.
And bring your hands over your face.
And let your eyes blink open into your hands.
Sweeping your hands down your face.
Bringing your eyes to a whole new way of seeing yourself and the world.
And just smiling in gratitude for knowing that you can change any pattern that doesn't serve you.
You have that power in you.
And just notice right now how you feel and particularly how you feel in relation to whatever topic you chose to work on.
Well done.
So this is something we're going to want to repeat over and over again.
Because as Dr.
Joe says,
It's not enough to do it just once.
You have to be able to repeat the experience and do it so many times you no longer have to think about it.
Which means it's gone into your subconscious now and it's just become who you are.
And at the beginning,
It does take a bit of determination and commitment to these practices to make the shift.
But you could see even just from that little tapping that we did now,
It was a big energetic shift.
So I want you to know that I'm here for you to support you in sustaining the shift,
Changing those cells,
Changing those brains.
So that you become in a state of being how you really want to be and live in life.
And I want to tell you that there have been so many things in my life that I have overcome and that I have shifted and so many negative thought processes and ways of being that now I look back on that and I'm like,
Wow,
I can't even believe I was like that,
That I was so depressed,
That I was so anxious,
You know,
That I was in such a bad,
Negative,
Dark hole of my life.
And I have also watched so many people make those huge transformations and leaps.
And one of the places that I am lucky enough to watch this transformation again and again is through the Yoga Lifestyle programs that I teach.
And I have a program that you can access right now,
Right after you get off of this call if you want to and start.
And it's called the 30 Day Evolution because there are 30 short lessons in it.
They're each only about 10 minutes long.
So if you're really busy,
That's okay.
You can get so much out of them.
And I made them for people to have like,
Boom,
Straight to the heart of it.
Let's do this action each day.
So just to let you know a little bit more about this program,
The first module is called rest sleep and self love.
And just like we talked about,
It's so freaking hard to change our patterns if we're in the stress response.
So all of the first lessons are super practical,
Effective tools to help you get out of the stress response and also to help you get out of self criticism.
And move more into practices of self love.
And then you get really empowered.
And the more you do that,
The more energy you have.
And so then we go into module two,
Which is about energy and movement and intuition and listening to that higher wisdom and that greater clarity and all of these practices that are going to help you get into that.
And you'll be amazed at how,
You know,
Some of them are meditation practices,
Some of them are movement practices.
And they're just going to like hook you into the deep wisdom that is within you,
That is within everybody and your intuition.
And then we're going to drop into what I call inner body and meditation and digestion and sustainability.
And we're going to understand how to keep this going and really nurture our new energetic intuitive self.
And so we just keep unfolding and blooming and you know what?
It's endless if you want it to be.
And this will just keep us creating the thoughts and the minds that will give us the life that we really want because life is just an accumulation of days.
So if we start doing these practices in simple ways on a daily basis,
We create the life that we dream of.
So much love.
I'll see you all soon.

This was a tremendous wealth of information (including some of my favorites: EFT, Atomic Habits, challenging old beliefs, establishing anchor statements), yet delivered in a way that didn’t feel overwhelming. A truly inspiring overview of techniques to start today and put in the daily practice to a new beginning. Much appreciated!

I really enjoyed this talk. I have recently been diagnosed with two autoimmune disorders, and it's confusing and startling to think of your body attacking itself.i started meditation and swimming and found both to help. it started me down a road of recognizing unhealthy thoughts abd habits. meditation, specifically MBSR has been a godsend. I found this talk to me very informative and helpful. thank you?

That was extremely helpful. I especially appreciated the concept of beliefs about oneself that may at one time have been true but which now are no longer true. Greatly helpful for letting go and moving on.
